Maroon Cloth Hardback. Condizione: Very Good -. First Edition. 1895. First edition. [xv], 311pp, a frontispiece portrait of Robert Mathison and 15 other black and white illustrations. In April 1889 the Innerleithen Alpine Club was formed with the aim of 'organising excursions to the neighbouring hills and glens, to elucidate the… botanical and geological features and antiquarian lore of Peeblesshire'. Robert Mathison was voted President and he held the role until his death. The membership was open to anyone and represented a broad sweep of the local population. By the time of the First World War numbers had dwindled and in 1913 amalgamated into a new organisation which would become The Tweeddale Society. This book contains accounts of the Club's excursions, written by different authors and varying widely in style and treatment of the subject, and the aim has been to throw some new light on the botany, geology, and antiquities of Peeblesshire, and on the physical features and scenery of the districts adjoining the home county of the Club. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board and gold stamped emblem on the rear board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light staining on the boards and a 2" crease in the cloth near the top edge of the front board. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine is slightly faded with bumping and a little damage to the cloth at the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a little scattered light foxing. A name has been erased from the top edge of the front free endpaper and there are remains of a removed bookplate or label on the front fixed endpaper.

Second edition. 8vo, frontis., and 15 other plates, orig. wine cloth, gilt, inner hinges cracked, binding rubbed, top and base of spine chafed. [The club was formed by Mr. Robert Mathison, builder, Innerleithen, and Mr. Thomas Young, banker, Innerleithen, in response to requests for parties to be allowed to accompany them in the…ir botanical and geological excursions in the Peeblesshire area. It is a mine of local information and a testament to the high quality of local talent and abilities available at that time. In addition to local members, the walks attracted conductors such as Dr. James Hunter, Professor Veitch, and the outstanding 19th century geologist Professor Geikie. The book contains a description of the excursions led by Professor Geikie to study the geology of the Manor Valley, on the 20th of July, 1889 and 25th of August, 1894. The other excursions cover a wide range of history, geology and botany.].

hardcover. 1895 First Edition. 311pp, 16 illusts, original decorative grey cloth, a.e.g., VG+. In 1913 The Innerleithen Alpine Club was amalgamated with another organisation and became known rather cumbersomely as "The Tweeddale Club for the Study of History and Natural Science". It soon changed its name to "The Tweeddale Societ…y" and has remained so ever since. The Society flourished for 28 years until it was suspended in 1941 during the Second World War, and was later revived in 1967. In 2013 the Society marked the centenary of its foundation by publishing a fully illustrated history. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.
