There has only been one other diary of a member of a Labour Battalion in the First World War published, so this new discovery, here published for the first time is of great importance. These men were considered not-quite medically fit for military service, but fit enough for the hard manual work of building railways, clearing roads etc. The title is from the diary, and uses one of the derogatory names given the Labour Battalions by combat troops, yet their work was essential for the war effort. William Henry Thompson came from Cottingham in East Yorkshire and gives an intelligent, honest, revelatory, critical and often heart-breaking account of his experiences in France and Belgium, working very close to the front and witnessing first hand many of the shocking events of the war, from 1915 to 1919 (he was not demobilised till January). The text has been carefully edited in full, introduced and indexed by Katrin McClure of the Cottingham Local History Society and it is illustrated with 32 pages of mostly colour pictures, 128pp.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. A book which examines the relationship between the Dukes of Argyll, of Inveraray Castle, and the people living on the small Scottish island of Tiree. Much of it features the Highland Clearances, but events on an island rather than the hills. In the summer of 1886 hundreds of Tiree's islanders banded together to defy the Eighth Duke of Argyll, whose forbidding portrait with its implacable gaze is the last colour plate in the book. A sizeable police force was sent to the island, and repelled back to the mainland. 'There is war in Tiree' reported The Times. The eyes of the UK were suddenly focused on this remote island. The government then sent in the army and the ring-leaders were arrested and imprisoned. Soon afterwards, a member of the House of Commons used parliamentary privilege to call the Duke 'a thief and a robber by law - a shameless thief and a shameless robber'. The book is a concise history of one island during this, arguably the most dramatic period in Scottish history. It is a story of change and controversy. At its core are subjects of ducal policy, population growth, destitution and emigration, and then government intervention and land settlement. It does not seek to romanticise the islanders' plight or their stand, nor does it cast the dukes as villains. Instead it reflects on the islanders' natural desire to better their lives and the dukes' attempts to modernise this part of their estates. Much of Tiree's history is characterised by the resulting tension. The cover features a large-scale plan of the island made in 1768-9, reproduced in full amongst the colour plates and the book cites many manuscript sources from the Inveraray archives.

Soft drinks became popular in the wake of the eighteenth-century health spas and the temperance movement, and Victorian advances in technology and economic confidence which made a large-scale industry possible. Hundreds of recipes were invented and marketed throughout Britain. Most began as cottage industries, some flourished into major national and international concerns. In the 1970s and '80s, when the digging of Victorian refuse tips became a national hobby, discoveries of many lost brands were made, for the surviving bottles and flagons reveal the existence of over forty different Peterborough manufacturers and distributors between c.1846 and 1993. Each business is here given a write-up, including the family history and connections of the entrepreneurs. 256pp. contains a map and 330 illustrations (modern colour photographs, old photographs, old postcards and reproductions of contemporary advertisements), glossary, full index and bibliography.

Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978) is famous for his creation of the Picturesque Italianate garden village of Portmeirion in North Wales, well known from its use as the setting of the 1960s television series, The Prisoner, yet he was also a prolific general architect who could work in a variety of styles and deliver accomplished buildings for his clients, using the refined Classical, the eclectic mix of Vernacular elements called the Arts and Crafts, and the entirely Modern. This is the first book to attempt a balanced assessment of the many sides of this fascinating personality. Sumptuously illustrated with both old and new photographs, many supplied by the Portmeirion Trust, and architectural drawings from the archives of the Royal Institute of British Architects. 384pp.

After a period in Holland with his father and brother he established himself in London as a printer, publisher, type-founder and maker of scientific instruments and globes including pocket globes and the Castlemaine (or English) globe. He became Hydrographer to King Charles II in 1662. He was well known in Restoration London and acquainted with Pepys, Hooke, Halley and Evelyn. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1678. He published some 80 books, many of great importance. Some are splendid examples of publishing skills. In his later years he himself wrote and published two remarkable books, The Mechanick Exercises, Volumes I and II. The first deals with smithing, carpentry, joinery, and woodturning; the second with all aspects of printing. They gave accurate accounts of these crafts so breaking the traditions of secrecy in the Craft Guilds. These books remain of considerable interest today and are still available as facsimiles. Moxon died in London in 1691. Professor Derek A. Long F.S.A. has recently completed a biography of Joseph Moxon with the title "At the Sign of Atlas.the first full biography of Moxon. It has a glossy colour dust wrapper, extracts from which are reproduced above. It is a substantial hardback volume consisting of 155 pages of text and 61 Figures. The majority of the figures are in colour and many have not been published previously. The twelve chapters of text give detailed accounts of all aspects of Joseph Moxon's life and work, and include much new information based on the author's research over many years.

Here are 19 peer-reviewed essays by leading historians exploring medieval travel in general, not pilgrimage which is more frequently studied. Many medieval journeys were undertaken for reasons other than religion. The essays reveal the roads traversed by travellers, the maps they used, their provision for travel sicknesses and the inns where they stayed. Some of the papers deal with international diplomatic travel, such as the visit of the Emperor Sigismund to England in 1416, exotic journeys round the Mediterranean and along the Silk Road, but much travel was quotidian: to visit relatives, to settle business accounts, to serve on juries or to pursue cases in civil and ecclesiastical courts. Women were frequent travellers, sometimes for pleasure or for family matters, and sometimes for economic reasons. The authors of the essays in order of appearance are Alfred Hiatt, David Harrison, Laura Wright, Carole Rawcliffe, Martha Carlin, Kate Franklin, Kelcey Wilson-Lee, ffiona Peregrinor, Bart Lambert and Joshua Ravenhill, Nicholas Rogers, Robert N. Swanson, Alexandra F. Johnston, Joanna Mattingley, Joel T. Rosenthal, Nicholas Orme, Julia Boffey, Shayne Aaron Legassie, Martha W. Driver and Mary Lynn Rampolla.
