The country was passing through complex and cumulative crisis and was at crucial crossroads due to internal dissensions and external aggressions. The society was divided due to the Brahmanical social order rigid caste system and social stratification and obscurantist and superstitious orthodoxies. In his essay on Hinduism Dr. Karan Singh has perceptively spelt out the social stratification of Indian society which was developed by our thinkers and seers. The Indian Society was classified into four categories on the basis of their intrinsic qualities. The highest caste consists of Brahmins the thinkers philosophers and priests whose main job was to provide educational inputs and religious guidance to society. The Kashatriya's Dharma was to rule the nation and defend it against any aggression. The Vaishyas's main vocation was to carry out commercial and agricultural operations. The fourth category was that of Shudras whose main job was to provide labourers. There were certain categories which were known as out castes and had been facing socio economic exploitations and psychological humiliations for centuries. Thus the system of untouchability has been a disgrace to the remarkable achievement of Hindu civilisation. Despite great trauma and turmoil for many centuries in the whole of India due to Muslim aggressions and conquests Hinduism had to look inward to preserve itself against the wide spread persecution by Muslims. At the same time we witnessed the dawn of a synergic movement in which at the mystical level there was a synthesis between two faiths Hinduism and Islam. These factors led to a devotional revival which is known as Bhakti Movement. The book contains detailed account of the composition of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The book deals with the setting up of Gurudwaras. It also throws light on significant thoughts and announcements made by the President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh during their visits to Amritsar in August and September in 2004 on the auspicious occasion of the 400 Anniversary of the installation of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. An attempt has been made to look at Sri Guru Granth Sahib as a sacred scripture of the world. It also focuses on the fascinating life story of all the Gurus. The teachings of Guru Nanak have been discussed in depth in the book. The book is rounded off with a chapter on the role of the women in Sikhism. Guru Nanak did not attach any impurity to the women and advocated the equality of sex. This combined with Derrida's Theory of Meaning (deferral as well as difference in multiple signification) Foucault's decentering of thought emergence of multiple perspectives in the context of Barthes notion on the death of author Derrida's finding of the rupture of thought and the loss of locus in it his dependence on the ruse namely differance which is a conflated version of Hegel's concept of difference the dialectics involved in Derrida's use of deconstruction and Nietzsche's antithetics which is the play or fire of words Derrida's observation that metaphysics became discourse with the decentering of thought and the logical disintegration of logic (Peter Dews) one witnesses in postmodern thinkers led the author (aided by the Derridean reading of Nietzsche) to think of the emergence of a new level of logic a sort of postmodern dialectics. The linkage to dialectics is because of the developments within Marxist dialectics Althusser's concept of overdetermination and Mao's innovative clarifications in the area of dialectics regarding contradiction major contradictions principal contradiction and principal aspect of contradiction. Read with Derrida's critique of binary contradictions Sugathan takes on the issue of multipolarity of contradiction not multiple contradictions but about multipolarity in a contradiction. This leads to the multipolar dialectics which Sugathan named polylectics (or multilectics) a third stage in the development of logic. Polylectics happened to be the logic of post modernism because postmetaphysics or postmodernism is the post Nietzschean pattern of thought. Dialectics critiqued metaphysics. But the logic of postmodernism critiqued both metaphysics and dialectics. A study of the findings of a survey of the border districts of Punjab by The Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development Chandigarh in the nineteen eighties at the height of Sikh militancy led the author to seek an understanding of this traumatic development. Those were indeed crucial years for the people of Punjab. The author has sought the roots of this crisis in the history of Punjab since the days of the national movement. The result is comprehensive study of the historical cultural political economic and social experiences of the people of Punjab the blood letting of partition the problems of the social and cultural integration of the people of the two parts of Punjab repeated changes in the political and administrative boundaries of the state and the problems left behind. He provides a comprehensive and analytical study of the data available from the CRRID study and relates them to the crisis of the nineteen eighties. The author analyses the violence in Punjab in relation to similar happenings in different parts of the country. He believes that such violence more often than not with secessionist aims is an expression of the crisis of development. The militant articulation differs from state to state according to its specific experiences. In their totality they raise issues of regional autonomy within the federal structure of India. The failure to address this vital question according to the author threatens the unity and integrity of the country and provides neighbouring countries opportunities for subversive interventions. In this context the author has considered in some detail the rarely discussed question of the crucial importance of the strategic location of Punjab for the security of India and particularly of Kashmir. He has drawn specific attention to the role of the people in such situations in helping the armed forces with reference to the experience of the war with Pakistan in 1965. The book is an exhaustive study with a strong database. The framework is interpretative which helps an attempt to look at possibilities for solutions to the issues that continue to be ignored even today. The study assumes some significance today in view of recent expressions of growing discontent among some sections of the farming community in Punjab. The book has a foreword by Mr. P.H. The illustrations are all from the private album of the author. As explained in the text most of my negatives proved failures but a few were found fit to reproduce.
