However, the wealth of concrete and natural examples which has contributed so much to the appeal and development of classical dynamics, is noticeably absent in this more general theory. The purpose of this book is to help remedy this scarcity of explicit examples by introducing a class of continuous Zd-actions diverse enough to exhibit many of the new phenomena encountered in the transition from Z to Zd, but which nevertheless lends itself to systematic study: the Zd-actions by automorphisms of compact, abelian groups. One aspect of these actions, not surprising in itself but quite striking in its extent and depth nonetheless, is the connection with commutative algebra and arithmetical algebraic geometry. The algebraic framework resulting from this connection allows the construction of examples with a variety of specified dynamical properties, and by combining algebraic and dynamical tools one obtains a quite detailed understanding of this class of Zd-actions. 328 pp. Englisch.

Die Entwicklung wird von sehr unterschiedlichen Menschen und Gruppen vorangetrieben. Verhaltensforscher erarbeiten deren Grundl…agen. Es gilt namIich herauszufinden, welche Haltungssysteme im Sinne der darin lebenden Tiere als tiergerecht bezeichnet werden konnen, wo Kompromisse moglich sind und welche Haltungsformen abgelehnt werden miissen. Es gilt aber auch herausZufinden wie Stane beschaffen sein soll ten, in denen Menschen im Rahmen ihrer taglichen Arbeit mit den Nutztieren umgehen. Zu fragen sind daher die Tiere und die Tierhalter. Die vorliegende Schrift ist aus einer am Fachbereich Landwirtschaft der Gesamthochschule Kassel in Witzenhausen angefertigten Diplomarbeit hervorgegangen. Am Anfang stand das Engagement des Autors fUr die Belange der Milchkiihe. Es ~eIang das Niitzliche mit dem Angenehmen zu verbinden und das Interesse an ethologlschen Fragen in eine Diplomarbeit als AbschluB des landwirtschaftlichen Studiums einzubringen. Gediingt wurde die Pflanze mit dem Humus der Kenntnisse, die sich auf den verschiedenen Gebieten der landwirschaftlichen Tierhaltung angesammelt hatten. Die berechtigten Forderungen der Praxis sorgten schlieBlich dafiir, daB die Baume nicht in den Himmel wuchsen. So ist ein Leitfaden entstanden, der mithelfen kann, den Wunsch nach tiergerechter Milchviehhaltung etwas besser zu erfiillen. Wer Verbesserungen, Umbauten oder gar einen Neubau plant, wird zahlreiche Anregun gen finden. Wer sich, aus welchen Grunden auch immer, informieren will, kann dies mit Gewinn tun. Der Leser wird schnell gewahr werden, wie vielschichtig die Synthese aus dem Verhalten von Milchkiihen, den daraus abgeleiteten Grundre~eln des Stallbaus und den Beurteilungskriterieen der Tierschutzgesetzgebung in der Wirkllchkeit ist. 108 pp. Deutsch, Englisch.
