The organizing and program committees worked hard to make this year's symposium possible, and we were delighted that so many people came to - lonial Williamsburg, Virginia, for three days of the latest results in the eld of graph drawing. As in previous years, the review process was quite competitive. We accepted 30 out of 53 regular-length submissions, and 5 out of 15 short submissions, for a total acceptance ratio of 35 out of 68, or 51%. This year's program featured several new developments in the eld. Four di erent approaches for handling very large graphs were presented in a session on force-directed layout. Two sessions were devoted to the latest advances in orthogonal graph drawing. And alongside the usual mix of theory and practice papers we had several contributions based on empirical studies of users and of systems. Our invited talks were given by two speakers who were new to most members of the GD community, but who work in areas that are closely related to graph drawing. Professor Colin Ware of the University of New Hampshire told us how knowledge of human visual perception is useful for the design of e ective data visualizations. One additional fear we had during this wait was whether - ganising this event would have generated a boon or another bug. The reasons for this fear originated in the awareness that the design of interactive systems is a fast moving area. The type of research work presented at this unique event has received limited support from funding agencies and industries making it more difficult to keep up with the rapid technological changes occurring in interaction technology. However, despite our fear, the workshop was successful because of the high-quality level of participation and discussion. Before discussing such results, let us step back and look at the evolution of DSV-IS (Design, Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems), an international wo- shop that has been organised every year since 1994. The first books that addressed this issue in a complete and thorough manner were the collection of contributions edited by Harrison and Thimbleby and the book written by Alan Dix, which focused on abstractions useful to highlight important concepts in the design of interactive systems. This is due to the simplicity of the d electron configuration, the wide variety of stereochemistries that copper(II) compounds can adopt, and the f- xional geometric behavior that they sometimes exhibit [1]. The electronic and geometric properties of a molecule are inexorably linked and this is especially true with six-coordinate copper(II) compounds which are subject to a Jahn-T- ler effect.However,the spectral-structural correlations that are sometimes d- wn must often be viewed with caution as the information contained in a typical solution UV-Vis absorption spectrum of a copper(II) compound is limited. Meaningful spectral-structural correlations can be obtained in a related series of compounds where detailed spectroscopic data is available. In the fol- 4- lowing sections two such series are examined; the six-coordinate CuF and 6 2+ Cu(H O) ions doped as impurities in single crystal hosts.Using low tempera- 2 6 ture polarized optical spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance, a very detailed picture can be drawn about the geometry of these ions in both their ground and excited electronic states.
