Neuware -Just like the previous workshop at VLDB 1999 in Edinburgh, the purpose of this workshop is to promote telecom data management as one of the core research areas in database research and to establish a strong connection between the telecom and database research communities. As I wrote in the preface of those proceedings, data management in telecommuni- tions is an interesting area of research given the fact that both service management and service provisioning are very data intensive, and pose extreme requirements on data management technology. Given the feedback on the previous workshop we decided to keep the same program set-up for this workshop: an invited speaker, a collection of research papers, and a panel discussion. We received 18 good quality papers from which we selected 12 to construct a very interesting program. The program has been divided into four sections. The first section focuses on CDR data warehouse and data mining technology. Data warehousing and data mining around customer usage data remains an important area of interest for telecommunication operators. The growing competition, especially in the mobile market, means that operators have to put more effort into customer retention and satisfaction. The second section focuses on performance issues around databases in telecommunication. The workshop was held at the Sheraton University City Hotel, in Philadelphia USA, and was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Active networks aim to ease the introduction of network services by adding dynamic programmability to network devices such as routers, and making aspects of the programmability accessible to users. Active networks research has focused on the development and testing of active techniques, that enable dynamic programmability in a networked environment. These techniques have a wide variety of applications. At IWAN 2001 we aimed to bring together members of the various communities using active and related techniques, and provide a forum for discussion and collaboration, involving researchers, developers, and potential users. Papers presented at IWAN 2001 covered the application of active techniques to many aspects of network based communication, including active multicast, active QoS, active security, active GRIDs, and active management. In addition, there were papers on architectures, language, and API issues. Although there were only 22 submissions, the standard of the 10 accepted papers was very high. This indicated clearly a substantial amount of ongoing high quality research in active networking, despite the current unfavorable economic conditions in the telecommunications industry. The papers also demonstrated that the research is genuinely global, and justifies an international workshop of this type. COSIT grew out of a series of workshops/NATO Advanced Study Institutes/NSF Specialist Meetings during the 1990s concerned with theoretical and applied aspects of representing large scale space, particularly geographic or environmental space (this history is elaborated in the prefaces of previous COSIT proceedings). Now [18] hasa dual but clearly defined nature: - an introduction to the basic concepts in convex analysis, - a study of convex minimization problems (with an emphasis on numerical al- rithms), and insists on their mutual interpenetration. This is the motivation for the present edition, our intention being to create a tool useful to teach convex anal ysis. Yet it took until 1850 to realise that fainter stars were not necessarily further away, nor the brighter ones closer.
