It was meant to serve a double purpose: to help both, the student when first confronted with quantum mechanics and the experimental scientist, who has never before used it as a tool, to learn how to apply the general theory to practical problems of atomic physics. Since that early date, many excellent books have been written introducing into the general framework of the theory and thus indispensable to a deeper understanding. It seems, however, that the more practical side has been somewhat neglected, except, of course, for the flood of special monographs going into broad detail on rather restricted topics. In other words, an all-round introduction to the practical use of quantum mechanics seems, so far, not to exist and may still be helpful. It was in the hope of filling this gap that the author has fallen in with the publishers' wish to bring the earlier German editions up to date and to make the work more useful to the worldwide community of science students and scientists by writing the new edition in English. From the beginning there could be no doubt that the work had to be much enlarged. New approximation methods and other developments, especially in the field of scattering, had to be added. When the second edition was prepared, only two pages on algebraic geometry codes were added. These have now been removed and replaced by a relatively long chapter on this subject. Although it is still only an introduction, the chapter requires more mathematical background of the reader than the remainder of this book. One of the very interesting recent developments concerns binary codes defined by using codes over the alphabet 7l.4¿ There is so much interest in this area that a chapter on the essentials was added. Knowledge of this chapter will allow the reader to study recent literature on 7l. -codes. 4 Furthermore, some material has been added that appeared in my Springer Lec ture Notes 201, but was not included in earlier editions of this book, e. g. The mixture of invited and selected papers made the meeting moderately open and attractive. Most of presentations made at the meeting are included in this volume. A variety of physical phenomena in fluid mechanics, astrophysics, groundwa ter flow, meteorology, reactive flow and several other areas can be effectively modeled by systems of conservation laws. In order to focus recent trends in theory and numerics in this research area and to stimulate further research in this field, we decided to organize the 'International School on Theory and Numerics for Conservation Laws', which took place in FreiburgjLittenweiler, Germany, from 20 to 24 October 1997. The school was sponsored by the DFG-Graduiertenkolleg 'Nichtlineare Dif ferentialgleichungen, Modellierung, Theorie, Numerik, Visualisierung' at the University of Freiburg. It was attended by about 60 young international re searchers. This volume contains the contributions of the five main lecturers of the school. Each article covers five hours of lectures on a specific new research area in the field of theory and numerics for conservation laws. Reviews of recent de velopments are given, accompanied by new research results of the authors. The topics include a kinetic approach to conservation laws by Benoit Perthame, which can be used for the construction of approximate Riemann solvers for the full system of gas dynamics. Neuware -Fifteen papers were presented at the first workshop on Multi-Agent Systems and Agent-Based Simulation held as part of the Agents World conference in Paris, July 4-- 6, 1998. The workshop was designed to bring together two developing communities: the multi-agent systems researchers who were the core participants at Agents World, and social scientists interested in using MAS as a research tool. Most of the social sciences were represented, with contributions touching on sociology, management science, economics, psychology, environmental science, ecology, and linguistics. The workshop was organised in association with SimSoc, an informal group of social scientists who have arranged an irregular series of influential workshops on using simulation in the social sciences beginning in 1992. While the papers were quite heterogeneous in substantive domain and in their disciplinary origins, there were several themes which recurred during the workshop. One of these was considered in more depth in a round table discussion led by Jim Doran at the end of the workshop on 'Representing cognition for social simulation', which addressed the issue of whether and how cognition should be modelled.
