Such recollections customarily are delivered at the celebration of a milestone in the history of the laboratory, su…ch as the institution's fiftieth or one hundredth anniversary. Three such accounts of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge have been recorded. The first of these, A History of the Cavendish Laboratory, 1871-1910, was published in 1910 in honor of the twenty fifth anniversary of Joseph John Thomson's professorship there. The second, The Cavendish Laboratory, 1874-1974, was published in 1974 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the Cavendish. The third, A Hundred Years and More of Cambridge Physics, is a short pamphlet, also published at the centennial of the 1 Cavendish. These accounts are filled with the names of great physicists (such as James Clerk Maxwell, Lord Rayleigh, J. J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, and William Lawrence Bragg), their glorious achievements (for example, the discoveries of the electron, the neutron, and DNA) and interesting anecdotes about how these achievements were reached. But surely a narrative that does justice to the history of a laboratory must recount more than past events. Such a narrative should describe a living entity and provide not only details of the laboratory's personnel, organization, tools, and tool kits, but should also explain how these components interacted within 2 their wider historical, cultural, and social contexts.

This rush to find applicable methods has lead to a somewhat confusing body of literat…ure that represents a barrier to chemists wishing to learn more about chemometrics. The confusion results partly from the mixing of chemical notation and nomenclature with those of statistics, applied mathematics and engineering. Additionally, in the absence of collaboration with mathematicians, chemists have, at times, misused data analysis methodology and even reinvented methods that have seen years of service in other fields. The Chemometrics Society has worked hard to solve this problem since it was founded in 1974 with the goal of improving communications between the chemical sciences and applied mathe matics and statistics. The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Chemometrics is evidence of this fact as it was initiated in response to a call from its membership for advanced training in several areas of chemometrics. This Institute focused on current theory and application in the new field of Chemometrics: Use of mathematical and statistical methods, Ca) to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments; and Cb) to provide maximum chemical information by analyzing chemical data. The Institute had two formal themes and two informal themes.

Thirty-five scientists from five different NATO countries attended the workshop and twenty-seven delegates presented papers. The two aims of the workshop were to bring together in one forum a number of comparatively separate approaches to autobiographical memory and to promote theory in the area generally . These aims were fulfilled in the presentations and discussions, particularly the final discussion session, in which delegates focussed on the central issues of the nature, structure, and functions of autobiographical memory and how these emerge in different research areas. The present volume contains the papers arising from the workshop. We thank Mrs. Sheila Whalley for secretarial help and Fiona Hirst and Stephen Anderson für practical assistance in coordinating registration for the workshop.

Unitals are an interesting structure found in square order projective planes, and numerous research articles constructing and discussing these structures have…appeared in print. More importantly, there still are many open pr- lems, and this remains a fruitful area for Ph.D. dissertations. Unitals play an important role in nite geometry as well as in related areas of mathematics. For example, unitals play a parallel role to Baer s- planes when considering extreme values for the size of a blocking set in a square order projective plane (see Section 2.3). Moreover, unitals meet the upper bound for the number of absolute points of any polarity in a square order projective plane (see Section 1.5). From an applications point of view, the linear codes arising from unitals have excellent technical properties (see 2 Section 6.4). The automorphism group of the classical unitalH =H(2,q ) is 2-transitive on the points ofH, and so unitals are of interest in group theory.
