The terms 'structural linguistics', 'mathematical linguistics', 'applied lin guistics' (which, incidentally, has another meaning here than in other parts of the w…orld) all may cover theoretical work in linguistics. In older days serious theoretical work was done under the heading 'machine translation'. Very often the need for a special term for theoretically oriented studies in linguistics does not even arise. Does this mean that there is no real theoretical linguistics in the Soviet Union This would be, of course, a completely false conclusion. Some lin guists tend to identify theoretical linguistics with generative grammar. Though it might be true - and I am myself very much inclined to subscribe to this view - that generative grammar has been the most fruitful linguistic theory up to now, this does not justify, however, the above identification. Incidentally, as we shall see later on, generative grammar has not been left unnoticed in the Soviet Union either. There are different trends within theo retical linguistics, one of which is generative grammar. More than two years ago the editor of Synthese, laakko Hintikka, an nounced a special issue devoted to space and time, and articles were solicited. Part of the reason… for that announcement was also the second source of papers. Several years ago I gave a seminar on special relativity at Stanford, and the papers by Domotor, Harrison, Hudgin, Latzer and myself partially arose out of discussion in that seminar. All of the papers except those of Griinbaum, Fine, the second paper of Friedman, and the paper of Adams appeared in a special double issue of Synthese (24 (1972), Nos. 1-2). I am pleased to have been able to add the four additional papers mentioned in making the special issue a volume in the Synthese Library. Of these four additional articles, only the one by Fine has pre viously appeared in print (Synthese 22 (1971),448--481); its relevance to the present volume is apparent. Indeed, its roots can ultimately be traced into anti quity, since, in commerce and daily life, man has…always carried out reactions on polymers, e. g. in primitive dyeing and tanning operations. In more modern times Prof. Staudinger is commonly acknowledged as the investigator most responsible for the renais sance of interest in 'polymer analogous' reactions. In recent years it has become apparent that the 'black art' of conducting chemical reactions on macromolecules is an area which is amenable to basic scientific investigation. Examples of important developments which have come 'about ,in part ,as a result of this realization have been the advances in molecular biology (which may be rightly considered as the biochemistry of macromo lecules) and by such milestone achievements as solid phase pep tide synthesis and affinity chromatography. These few selected examples all have macromolecules (biological and synthetiC) in common. The stimulation to wide areas of scientific endeavor re sulting from these developments would undoubtedly have occurred sooner, and certainly with much less difficulty, had the various investigators been aware of the problems attending attempts at performing reactions on polymers. Since th…en, three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. For short periods the radio measurements have been combined with meteorolo gical measurements in order to describe the s…tructure of the re fractive index field. The heigth of layers was continously deter mined by remote sensing techniques and their thickness and inten sity by airborne and balloonborne instruments. From these data, field strengths have been calculated for scatter, reflection and duct propagation. It will be shown that reflection propagation dominates at the low frequency end. Whilst at higher frequencies, very sharp layers are required for reflection propagation. At these frequencies, high signals are generally caused by duct propagation. 1.1 Instruments and plan for the experiments. The radio measurements were performed with the following equipment. 5000 MHz: Transmitted power 500 kW (pulsed). Reflector antennas. Free space field strength over the path + 15 dBm. 460 MHz: Transmitted power 10 W (CW) 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 65 dBm. 170 MHz: Transmitted power 10, W(CW). 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 60 dBm. The antenna heights for the transmitters and receivers were 100 m above sea level. The field strengths were recorded on ink recorders and simul taneously sampled, digitized and evaluated on line in a minicom puter. For the meteorological measurements, the following equipment were used: Airborne microwave refractometer and thermistor, flown up to 2000 m. 380 pp. Englisch.

These ideas are analyzed fr…om a modern point of view in the Introduction. Furthermore, excerpts from Bolzano's correspondence are included which yield important remarks on his own work. The translation of the sections from the Wissenschaftslehre are based on a German text, which I have located in the Manuscript Department of the University Library in Prague (signature: 75 B 459). It was one of Bolzano's own copies of his printed work and contains a vast number of corrections made by Bolzano himself, thus representing the final stage of his thought, which has gone unnoticed in previous editions. The German originals of Bolzano's letters to M. J. Fesl, J. P. Romang, R. Zimmermann and F. Pi'ihonsky are in the Literary Archive of the Pamatnfk narodnfho pfsemnictvf in Prague. The original of the letter to F. Exner belongs to the Manuscript Department of the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. The original of the letter to J. E. The volume was written in collaboration with PETER HUBER (Swiss Federal School of Technology, Zürich). HUBER has written considerable parts of Chap ters 3 and 4, in particular all transcriptions of cuneiform texts in these chapters. Neuware -The present selection from the Wissenschaftslehre (Sulzbach 1837) of Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848) aims at giving a compact view of his main ideas in logic, semantics, epistemology and the methodology of science. These ideas are analyzed from a… modern point of view in the Introduction. Furthermore, excerpts from Bolzano's correspondence are included which yield important remarks on his own work. The translation of the sections from the Wissenschaftslehre are based on a German text, which I have located in the Manuscript Department of the University Library in Prague (signature: 75 B 459). It was one of Bolzano's own copies of his printed work and contains a vast number of corrections made by Bolzano himself, thus representing the final stage of his thought, which has gone unnoticed in previous editions. The German originals of Bolzano's letters to M. J. Fesl, J. P. Romang, R. Zimmermann and F. Pi'ihonsky are in the Literary Archive of the Pamatnfk narodnfho pfsemnictvf in Prague. The original of the letter to F. Exner belongs to the Manuscript Department of the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. The original of the letter to J. E. Neuware -On the day after the 1959 Cambridge Congress, during which the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics was founded, a biophysics section was formed within the Society of Physical Chemistry (Societe de Chimie Physique). Since then,…three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. Neuware -Long-term measurements of field strength have been performed over a 160 km path entirely over sea in the Baltic area. For short periods the radio measurements have been combined with meteorolo gical measurements in order to describe the struc…ture of the re fractive index field. The heigth of layers was continously deter mined by remote sensing techniques and their thickness and inten sity by airborne and balloonborne instruments. From these data, field strengths have been calculated for scatter, reflection and duct propagation. It will be shown that reflection propagation dominates at the low frequency end. Whilst at higher frequencies, very sharp layers are required for reflection propagation. At these frequencies, high signals are generally caused by duct propagation. 1.1 Instruments and plan for the experiments. The radio measurements were performed with the following equipment. 5000 MHz: Transmitted power 500 kW (pulsed). Reflector antennas. Free space field strength over the path + 15 dBm. 460 MHz: Transmitted power 10 W (CW) 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 65 dBm. 170 MHz: Transmitted power 10, W(CW). 8 element Yagi antennas. Free space field strength over the path - 60 dBm. The antenna heights for the transmitters and receivers were 100 m above sea level. The field strengths were recorded on ink recorders and simul taneously sampled, digitized and evaluated on line in a minicom puter. It was promptly recognized to be one of the few major works in the philosophy of the natural sciences of this generation. In part, this is so because G…riinbaum has chosen a problem basic both to philosophy and to the natural sciences - the nature of space and time; and in part, this is so because he so admirably exemplifies that Aristotelian devotion to the intimate and mutual dependence of actual science and philosophical understanding. More than this, however, the quality of his work derives from his achievement in combining detail with scope. The problems of space and time have been among the most difficult in contemporary and classical thought, and Griinbaum has been responsible to the full depth and complexity of these difficulties. This revised and enlarged second edition is a work in progress, in the tradition of reflective analysis of modern science of such figures as Ehrenfest and Reichenbach. In publishing this work among the Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science, we hope to contribute to and encourage that broad tradition of natural philosophy which is marked by the close collaboration of philoso phers and scientists.
