It is the first such study to integrate modern syn…tactic theory, cross-linguistic psychological evidence, and modern computational techniques in constructing a model of the human sentence processing mechanism. The monograph follows the rationalist tradition, arguing the central role of modularity and universal grammar in a theory of human linguistic performance. It refines the notion of `modularity of mind', and presents a distributed model of syntactic processing which consists of modules aligned with the various informational `types' associated with modern linguistic theories. By considering psycholinguistic evidence from a range of languages, a small number of processing principles are motivated and are demonstrated to hold universally. It is also argued that the behavior of modules, and the strategies operative within them, can be derived from an overarching `Principle of Incremental Comprehension'. Unfortunately, Professor Kluvanek did not live to contribute to the project of writing up in a systematic form, the circle of ideas to which the present work is devoted. It…is more than likely that with his input, the approach and areas of emphasis of the resulting exposition would have been quite different from what we have here. Nevertheless, the stamp of Kluvanek's thought and philosophy (but not necessarily his approval) abounds throughout this book. Although the title gives no indication, integration theory in vector spaces is a cen tral topic of this work. However, the various notions of integration developed here are intimately connected with a specific application-the representation of evolutions by func tional integrals. The representation of a perturbation to the heat semigroup in terms of Wiener measure is known as the Feynman-Kac formula, but the term has a wider meaning in the present work. Traditionally, such representations have been used to obtain analytic information about perturbations to free evolutions as an alternative to arguments with a more operator-theoretic flavour. No applications of this type are given here. It is an un derlying assumption of the presentation of this material that representations of the nature of the Feynman-Kac formula are worth obtaining, and in the process of obtaining them, we may be led to new, possibly fertile mathematical structures-a view largely motivated by the pervasive use of path integrals in quantum physics. 252 pp. Englisch.

The universality of the critria of Nyquist and Mikhailov and the simplicity an…d obvi ousness of the application of frequency and amplitude - frequency characteristics in analysing forced linear oscillations greatly encouraged the development of practi cally important nonlinear theories based on various forms of the harmonic balance hypothesis [303]. Therefore mathematically rigorous frequency methods of investi gating nonlinear systems, which appeared in the 60s, also began to influence many areas of nonlinear theory of oscillations. First in this sphere of influence was a wide range of problems connected with multidimensional analogues of the famous van der Pol equation describing auto oscillations of generators of various radiotechnical devices. Such analogues have as a rule a unique unstable stationary point in the phase space and are Levinson dis sipative. One of the pioneering works in this field, which started the investigation of a three-dimensional analogue of the van der Pol equation, was K. O. Friedrichs's paper [123]. The author suggested a scheme for constructing a positively invariant set homeomorphic to a torus, by means of which the existence of non-trivial periodic solutions was established. That scheme was then developed and improved for dif ferent classes of multidimensional dynamical systems [131, 132, 297, 317, 334, 357, 358]. The method of Poincare mapping [12, 13, 17] in piecewise linear systems was another intensively developed direction. 420 pp. Englisch.

The book begins with an epistemological and ontological consideration and simplification of Meinong's universe. In consequence of the mathematical development of his time, especially non-Euclidean geometries, Meinong developed the notion of precision objects and precision concepts. These discussions are relevant for understanding various technical terms, particularly concepts of values and valuations. These discussions also assist in assessing the possibility of knowing these concepts a priori, and in understanding the logical relationships between them and actual valuations. The initial focus on the synthesis of substances typical of living matter, exemplified by the first examples of organic chemistry through the synthesis…of urea from inorganic substances by Liebig, was accepted as the birth of organic chemistry, and thus also of organic synthesis. Although the early developments in organic synthesis closely followed the pursuit of molecules typical in nature, towards the end of the 19th century, societal pressures placed higher demands on chemical methods appropriate for the emerging age of industrialization. This led to vast amounts of information being generated through the discovery of synthetic reactions, spectroscopic techniques and reaction mechanisms. The basic organic functional group transformations were discovered and improved during the early part of this century. Reaction mechanisms were elucidated at a growing pace, and extremely powerful spectroscopic tools, such as infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry were introduced as everyday tools for a practising organic chemist. By the 1950s, many practitioners were ready to agree that almost every molecule could be syn thesized. Some difficult stereochemical problems were exceptions; for example Woodward concluded that erythromycin was a 'hopelessly complex target'. This frustration led to a hectic phase of development of new and increasingly more ingenious protecting group strategies and functional group transformations, and also saw the emergence of asymmetric synthesis. 332 pp. Englisch.

The book begins with an epistemological and ontological consideration and simplification of Meinong's universe. In consequence of the mathematical development of his time, especially non-Euclidean geometries, Meinong developed the notion of precision objects and precision concepts. They are discussed along with the so-called `incomplete objects' and problems associated with them. These discussions are relevant for understanding various technical terms, particularly concepts of values and valuations. These discussions also assist in assessing the possibility of knowing these concepts a priori, and in understanding the logical relationships between them and actual valuations. We find in Meinong's ethical writings a mixture of experiential and a priori knowledge. A translation is included of the fragment Ethische Bausteine (Elements of Ethics), together with Meinong's own notes and those of the editors of the text. This volume consists of 11 chapters by scholars from the EU, the CEECs and LDCs. Each paper is discussed in terms of its policy relevance by a policy maker as well as by an academic specializing in the field. In the opening chapter we aim to do justice to the discussion during the Workshop in Rotterdam in May 1994 at which preliminary versions of all chapters were presented. What that assumption translates into in more direct terms is that creation of future wealth would be better accomplished through redistribution of wealth today. The initial focus on the synthesis of substances typical of living matter, exemplified by the first examples of organic chemistry through the synthesis of u…rea from inorganic substances by Liebig, was accepted as the birth of organic chemistry, and thus also of organic synthesis. Although the early developments in organic synthesis closely followed the pursuit of molecules typical in nature, towards the end of the 19th century, societal pressures placed higher demands on chemical methods appropriate for the emerging age of industrialization. This led to vast amounts of information being generated through the discovery of synthetic reactions, spectroscopic techniques and reaction mechanisms. The basic organic functional group transformations were discovered and improved during the early part of this century. Reaction mechanisms were elucidated at a growing pace, and extremely powerful spectroscopic tools, such as infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry were introduced as everyday tools for a practising organic chemist. By the 1950s, many practitioners were ready to agree that almost every molecule could be syn thesized. Some difficult stereochemical problems were exceptions; for example Woodward concluded that erythromycin was a 'hopelessly complex target'.
