Following Kim's proof of `forking symmetry' wh…ich implies a good behaviour of model-theoretic independence, this area of model theory has been a field of intense study. It has necessitated the development of some important new tools, most notably the model-theoretic treatment of hyperimaginaries (classes modulo type-definable equivalence relations). It thus provides a general notion of independence (and of rank in the supersimple case) applicable to a wide class of algebraic structures. The basic theory of forking independence is developed, and its properties in a simple structure are analyzed. No prior knowledge of stability theory is assumed; in fact many stability-theoretic results follow either from more general propositions, or are developed in side remarks. The professors responsible for the program are: Hartmut Ehrig (TU), Günter Hommel (TU), Stefan Jähnichen (TU), Peter Löhr (FU), Miroslaw Malek (RU), Peter Pep per (TU), Radu Popescu-Zeletin (TU), Herbert Weber (TU), and Adam Wolisz (TU). Twenty scholarships have been granted to fellows of the Graduiertenkolleg for a maximal period of three years. The first is that autonomy, despite recent critiques about its importance in bioethics and philosophy of medicine, and the traditional resistance of medicine to its 'intrusion' into the doctor-…patient relation, is a fundamental building block of an individual's identity and mechanisms for dealing with illness, disease, and incapacity. As such it is an essential component in the health care professional's armamentarium employed to bring about healing. Furthennore, it functions in a similar way to assist the health professional in his or her relations to the sick and injured. The second conviction follows from the fITst. Autonomy is far more complex than appears from the philosophical use of the concept. In this conviction we join those who have criticized the over-reliance on autonomy in modem, secular bioethics originating in the United States, but gaining ascendancy in other cultures. This critique relies on appeals to the richer contexts of persons' lives. Elsewhere the contemporary critique of autonomy appears in a variety of alternative ethical models like narrative ethics, casuist ethics, and contextualism. Indeed, postmodern criticism of all bioethics argues that there is no defensible foundation for claims that one ought to respect autonomy or any other principle as a way of ensuring that one is ethical. 224 pp. Englisch.

There were 109 participants who came from 17 countries: Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, - mania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. During a period of two weeks, 41 invited lectures and 20 contributed lec tures were presented. Four lectures by invited speakers were delivered every day, followed by two sessions of contributed talks. It is also argued that such progress is also functional for all kinds of truth approximation: observational, referential, and theoretical. This sheds new light on the long-term dynamics of science and hence on the relation between the main epistemological positions, viz., instrumentalism (Toulmin, Laudan), constructive empiricism (Van Fraassen), referential realism (Hacking, Cartwright), and theory realism of a non-essentialist nature (constructive realism à la Popper).
