On 1 January, 19 3, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Ireland became Members of the European Economic Community, thus stepping up the number of Member States to nine. This enlargement of the Community opened a new phase of the relationship between the Community and the Developing Countries. In order to elaborate upon the evolution of this relationship, reliance must be placed on Part IV of the EEC Treaty, the provisions of the two Yaounde Conventions and the new ACP-EEC Convention of Lom~. The study is conceived of in six Chapters. The first Chapter deals with the background and early developments of the European Economic Community in relation to the concept of Association. The second considers a comparative analysis of the institutional provisions of the Yaounde Conventions. Chapter III is devoted to a historiaal study of certain provisions of Yaounde II Convention as a basis for the interpretation of the ACP-EEC Convention of LomA. The fourth Chapter deals with political and economic considerations - topics of considerable importance to the Contracting Parties, more particularly, the Developing Countries. Unavoidably, the conception of the historical problems and the evidence presented are shaped by the historian's view on both the desirability and the inevitability of the Bolshevik Revolution. The years 1890-1917 are particularly important as the crucible in which revolutionary forces developed. In the nineties, Finance Minister Sergei Witte laid the groundwork for a modern economy. While he achieved many of his economic goals, the stresses and strains of forced draft industrialization contributed to the revival of the revolutionary movement; political instability was their immediate effect. By the turn of the century the peasants were in open revolt, an alienated and militant urban proletariat was emerging, and a cohesive liberal opposition was beginning to develop. All these groups demanded fundamental reforms including full political rights for all citizens. By 1905 they had gathered sufficient strength to force the government to issue a constitution and a legislature called the Duma. Neither side, however, was satisfied. The Imperial government tried to take back what it had granted under duress and the opposition parties attempted to discredit the system as 'sham constitutionalism. Tyssot was a Huguenot who lived most of his life in Holland where he pursued a career as professor of mathematics in the sodal and cultural 1 Tyssot and his work seem to have been first brought to the attention of modem writers by the German critics during their investigation of the type of desert island or robinsonade literature that preceded and followed Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The Introduction to the text begins with a brief description of each of the extant MSS of the Serat Cabolek to be found in the Manuscript Sections of the Jakarta Museum Library and the Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia and in the Griental Manuscripts Section of the Leiden University Library. In addition, a description is given of a printed version of the Serat Cabolek. The eleven MSS and the printed text are compared with one another on the points of form, structure and content, in order to discover their mutual relationship. From this comparison it becomes clear that no matter how much these eleven MSS and the printed text of theSerat Cabolek may differ the one from the other, they all share a common core and all ultimately derive from a single source. By the terms of this definition, Clarendon is himself, of course, one of the historians studied. Clarendon's History is so formidable an achievement that all historians writing about the war before its publication have an air of prematureness. Nevertheless, as I hope the following pages will show, they produced a body of writing which may still be read with interest and profit and which anticipated many of the ideas and attitudes of Clarendon's History. I will even go so far as to say that many readers who have only a limited interest or no in terest in the Civil War are likely to find many of these historians interest ing, should their works come to their attention, for their treatment of the problems of man in society, for their psychological acuteness, and for their style. But while I intend to show their merits, my main concern will be to show how the Civil War appeared to historians, including Clarendon, who wrote within one or two generations after it, that is to say, at a time when it remained part of the experience of people still alive. However, they are united by the following important feature. In most cases, the equations involve an unknown function operated on by a bounded and often compact operator defined on some Banach space. The aim of the book is to list the main results concerning integral equations. The classical Fredholm theory and Hilbert-Schmidt theory are presented in Chapters II and III. The preceding Chapter I contains a description of the most important types of integral equations which can be solved in 'closed' form. Chapter IV is an important addition to Chapters II and III, as it contains the theory of integral equations with non-negative kernels. The development of this theory is mainly due to M. G. Krein. The content of the first four chapters is fairly elementary. It is well known that the Fredholm theory has been generalized for equations with compact operators. Chapter V is devoted tothis generalization. In Chapter VI one-dimensional (i.e. with one dependent variable) singular integral equations are considered.
