Indeed, as we shall see as this work progresses, the issues raised are central to moral psychology, religion, professional ethics, medical ethics, and the nature of moral systems generally. Although the title of this work is Autonomy. Authority and Moral Responsibility. we shall be concerned with the more general question about the relationship between autonomy (or self-direction) and exter nal influences, which I take to be any guide to behavior whose presence, content or substance is dependent upon something beyond the control of the agent. Something is beyond the control of the agent if the agent cannot determine whether or not it is present, what its content consists of, or whether or not (or in what way) it influences her. These 'external' influences may include (but are not necessarily limited to) religious con victions (which guide behavior according to a doctrine whose content is established independently of the agent); moral obligations (which re quire action in accordance with some moral theory); and desires for ob jects or states of affairs whose presence (or absence) is beyond the con trol of the agent. Born in Vienna on March 20, 1884, Frank died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 21, 1966. He received his doctor…ate in 1907 at the University of Vienna in theoretical physics, having studied under Ludwig Boltzmann; his sub sequent research in physics and mathematics was represented by more than 60 scientific papers. Moreover his great success as teacher and expositor was recognized throughout the scientific world with publication of his collaborative Die Differentialgleichungen der Mechanik und Physik, with Richard von Mises, in 1925-27. Frank was responsible for the second volume, on physics, and especially noted for his authoritative article on classical Hamiltonian mechanics and optics. Among his earliest papers were those, beginning in 1908, devoted to special relativity, which together with general relativity and physical cosmology occupied him throughout his life. Already in 1907, Frank published his seminal paper 'Kausalgesetz und Erfahrung' ('Experience and the Law of Causality'), much later collected with a splendid selection of his essays on philosophy of science, in English (1941c and 1949g, in our Bibliography). Joining the first 'Vienna Circle' in the first decade of the 20th century, with Hans Hahn, mathematician, and Otto Neurath, sociologist and economist, and deeply influenced by studies of Ernst Mach's critical conceptual histories of science and by the striking challenge of Poincare and Duhem, Frank continued his epistemological investigations. 320 pp. Englisch.

While healthy, free-living elderly appear not much more at nutritional risk than the rest of the population, the elderly who suffer from illness or other stress have a much higher incidence of nutritional prob lems than the population as a whole. Elderly are also more heterogeneous than the general population, resulting in a greater variation in nutritional requirements which requires a better understanding of how nutrition and health interact. In…this book we use a method of operator identities for investigating interpo lation problems. Following the method of operator identities we formulate a general interpolation problem containing the classical interpolation problems (Nevanlinna Pick, Caratheodory, Schur, Humburger, Krein) as particular cases. We write down the abstract form of the Potapov inequality. By solving this inequality we give the description of the set of solutions of the general interpolation problem in the terms of the linear-fractional transformation. Then we apply the obtained general results to a number of classical and new interpolation problems. Some chapters of the book are dedicated to the application of the interpola tion theory results to several other problems (the extension problem, generalized stationary processes, spectral theory, nonlinear integrable equations, functions with operator arguments). 2. The objective was to bring together researchers to present their latest advancements in the relatively new domain of Material properties identification… by Mixed Numerical Experimental Methods (MMM). MMM are a modem and increasingly powerful way to determine the values of unknown parameters in a numerical model by observations made on real physical test structures. Starting from the measurement of output values (like displacements, stresses, velocities, vibrations, . ) of the real physical test structure, MMM try to update parameters in the numerical model in such a way that the computed observations match the experimental observations. It was shown clearly at the colloquium that the combined use of numerical analysing tools and sophisticated measurement techniques has created an extra degree of freedom for the design of experiments and has led to new approaches for material characterisation. The colloquium was attended by 39 participants coming from 12 different European countries. We had 23 oral presentations on the different topics of the above mentioned sessions. Each presentation was followed by an intensive discussion. Du~ to the informal atmosphere and the limited number of participants, the discussions were very lively and fruitful. The opportunity to continue to discuss common problems after dinner in a reserved place was also offered to the Euromech participants. This opportunity and the fact that the monastery was isolated (nobody could escape!) created an excellent platform for discussions and personal contacts. 260 pp. Englisch.

The two greatest philosophers of that heaven of analytical philosophy - Peter Strawson and Mic…hael Dummett - supervised my work, reading and criticising all the fledgling philosophy that I wrote during those three years. At Sir Peter's request, Gareth Evans, shortly before his death, lent me an unpublished transcript of Kripke's John Locke Lectures. Work on the Appendix about Indian Philosophy was supervised by the late Professor Bimal Krishna Matilal with whom informal but intense philosophical conversations used to spill over into dinner at his place almost every other day. It was Professor Matilal who sent me, over a summer, to study a tough Navya-Nyaya text under his own Nyaya teacher Pandit Visvabandhu Tarkatirtha at Calcutta. All four of these teachers were as kind to me as my life-long mentor in philosophy Professor Pranab Kumar Sen, whose clarity and depth remain the unreachable regu lative ideal of my intellect. When I came back to India, my life became blissfully free of the agonising anxiety to publish, until, after a conference at Jadavpur University where I gave an impromptu paper, ironically enough, on Non-doings, I met Derek Parfit.
