For a long period after the ~scovery of the photoelectric effect. it was not possible to generate electro magnetic fields that did more than perturb the atom only slightly, and (first-or~er) perturbation theory could perfectly explain what was going on at those low intensities. The development of the pulsed laser bas changed this state of affairs in a rather dramatic way, and fields can be applied that really have a large, or even dominant influence on atomic structure. In the latter case, w~ speak of super-intense fields. Since the interaction between atoms and electromagnetic waves is characterized by many parameters other than the light intensity, such as frequency, iQnization potential, orbit time, etc., it is actually quite difficult to define what is exactly meant by the term 'super-intense'. Obviously the term does not have an absolute meaning, and intensity should always be viewed in relation to other properties of the system. An atom in a radiation field can thus best be described in terms of various ratios of the quantities involved. The nature of the system sometimes drastically changes if the value of one of these parameters exceeds a certain critical value, and the new regime could be called super-intense with respect to that parameter.…

In fact, even 1947 there was little development of this theme until the upsurge after of works in philosophical anthropology during the last decade. On the other hand, it is not being suggested that the conception of freedom found in recent writings is representative of earlier Soviet philosophy, during the Stalinist 'dead' period or earlier. In it we have tried to present the main lines of Soviet psycho logical theory, in particular, the philosophical principles on which that theory is founded. There are surprisingly few books in English on Soviet psychology, or, indeed, in any Western European language. The works that exist usually take the form of symposia or are collections of articles translated from Soviet periodicals. The most important of these are Psychology in the Soviet Union (ed. by Brian Simon), Recent Soviet Psychology (ed. by Neil O'Connor) and Soviet Psychology, A Symposium (ed. by Ralf Winn). Raymond Bauer has also edited an interesting symposium entitled Some Views on Soviet Psychology. Only two systematic studies of Soviet psychology have been published to date: Joseph Wortis' Soviet Psychiatry and Raymond Bauer's The New Man in Soviet Psychology. Both are valuable introductions to Soviet psychology; Bauer's book, in particular, gives a good account of the debates on psychological theory in the Soviet Union in the nineteen twenties and -thirties. Both, however, are somewhat out of date. There are also a number of interesting articles written by Ivan D. A team of sociologists traced two groups of children, ten and thirteen years old respectively, and suspected of mental deficiency. The psychologists subsequently tested this sampie in order to decide whether the subjects could indeed be regarded as mentally deficient, if an intelligence quotient of 79 or lower is taken as criterion. As a second assessment task, a systematic categorization with a view to the expected needs for guidance was attempted. For this purpose the total sampie was divided into subgroups on the basis of test result patterns. RESEARCH QUESTIONS The analysis of the data from this sampie provided an interesting op portunity for a number of explorations into both theoretical and prac tical questions, which are only partly related to the aims of the investi gation. These questions concern the merits of the tests used, the structure of the test scores in the sampie under investigation, and some other general problems about the sampie and the subpopulation of the mentally deficient. Questions about the tests concern their suitability for the investiga tion of mentally retarded subjects, in particular for assessing their need for guidance. It is a physically involving problem and the methods available to mathematics today seem unsatisfactory to produce pure non linear ways of attack. The linearization process in both subjects is clearly of doubtful significance, so that, even if very restrictive, numerical solutions are still the best and more valuable sources of informations. It is quite possible that we know now very little more of the entire problem that was known to Poincare, with the advantage that we can now compute much faster and with much more precision. We feel that the papers collected in this Symposium have contributed a step forward to the comprehension of Resonance, Periodic Orbits and Stability. In a field like this, it would be a surprise if one had gone a long way toward that comprehension, during the short time of two weeks. The domain of this panel - and consequently the topics of their former ASI-~rogrammes - is the influ ence of the non-ionized atmosphere on electromagnetic wave propagation, its prediction and its use as a re mote sensing technique. It is the final goal to inform radio and radar engineers about the various defects caused by the propagation medium atmosphere. Today there exist high-sensitive radar systems which can pro vide identification and produce images of distant ob jects very accurately by measuring a) the effect of the target on the shape of a short radar pulse, or b) the wave front (phase and amplitude distribution) and its orientation in space. But usuallv the radar-to-target path is through the inhomogeneous and turbulent atmo sphere and so the absolut limits of the system are very often determined by this atmosphere. It was the plan of this ASI to arrange an interdisciplinary information exchange between radar experts and propagation specia lists in order to get a better understanding of the susceptibility to atmospheric effects and to develope new methods that will reduce or correct these errors. In the first phase, attention was paid chiefly to the natural sequence hormone; efforts were channeled to explore its diagnostic use; and nearly all the clinical investigations were coordinated by a single pharmaceutical company. The successes in this area were quite limited and the interest in the promise of this agent as a diagnostic test has long since waned. This phase of research con sumed roughly the first seven years of clinical testing after the isolation and characterization of the compound by the two groups involved in the Nobel effort. With the appearance of long-acting LHRH agonists, the second phase of research on LHRH began in the late '70's. In most universities a detailed study of abstract algebraic systems commences in the second year. By this time the student has gained some experience in mathematical reasoning so that a too elementary book would rob him of the joy and the stimulus of using his ability. I tried to make allowance for this when I chose t4e level of presentation. On the other hand, I hope that I also avoided discouraging the reader by demands which are beyond his strength. So, the first chapters will certainly not require more mathematical maturity than can reasonably be expected after the first year at the university. Apart from one exception the formal prerequisites do not exceed the syllabus of an average high school. As to the exception, I assume that the reader is familiar with the rudiments of linear algebra, i. e. addition and multiplication of matrices and the main properties of determinants. In the first chapters, matrices will almost exclusively occur in examples and exercises providing non-trivial instances in the theory of groups and rings. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The three most striking characteristics of the cornea are: a) Its structure or rather its perfectly regular architectonic, by virtue of which it is transparent. b) The absence of vessels, the cornea being nourished by the perilimbic vessels, the endothelial surface in communication with the aqueous humour and the epithelial surface in contact with the pre-corneal film. c) The very slow turnover of the cells, that is to say the keratocytes, with the result that the metabolism of the cornea is very weak. It is this third characteristic which justifies our present investigation. The keratocytes, which are apparently inactive, have in fact a latent activity. They can be activated by central corneal incisions and also by tissue cultures. Under either of those conditions, the keratocytes become very active, develop all the cytoplasmic organites and produce mucopoly saccharides as well as the precursors of the collagen (Fig. 1). In order to study the pathological keratocyte, we chose a storage disease, wherein the catabolism of the mucopolysaccharides is blocked, namely the macular dystrophy of the cornea. We undertook the same investigation both for normal and for pathologi cal corneas and studied the keratocyte 'in situ' and in tissue cultures using various microscopical and histochemical techniques. Our knowledge of abundances, in both stellar and interstellar contexts, comes almost enti rely from line analysis, as does a major fraction of our ability to model stellar atmospheres. As new facets of the universe become observable so the techniques of high reso lution spectroscopy are brought to bear, with great reward. Improved instruments, such as echelle spectrographs, employ ing detectors of high quantum efficiency, have revolutioned our ability to observe high quality line profiles, although until now this ability has been confined to the brightest stars. Fabry-Perot interferometers and their modern deriva tives are bringing new ranges of resolving power to studies of atomic and ionic interstellar lines, and of course radio techniques imply exceedingly high resolution for the cool interstellar medium of molecules and radicals. Telescopes in space are extending the spectral range of these types of observations. Already the Copernicus and IUE high resolution spectrographs have given us a tantalizing glimmer of what it will be like to obtain ultraviolet spectra with resolution and signal to noise ratio approaching those obtainable on the ground. The general theory of approximate methods includes many known fundamental results. Its methods permit to devise metal processing, allow to assess safety of structures against collapse, make possible to estimate flow of bulk solids. The technological progress calls both for deeper understanding of sources of plastic deformation and for more rigorous description of mecha nisms of plastic motion. It was felt at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research in Warsaw several years ago that an international meeting bringing together experts in various domains of plasticity and studying plastic behavior from different positions could be of use for further development of the discipline itself and for its service to society. The appropriate occasion for such a meeting sponsored by the Polish Academy of Sciences was provided by the 70th anniversary of Professor Wadaw Olszak. The idea of a fundamentals oriented symposium was favorably received by the scientific community over the world. Eminent scientists generously advised me as to the scope of the meeting and helped in shaping the program. The first eight of the ten available days were devoted to an Advanced Study Insti tute, with lectures on the state of the art with respect to deter ministic and stochastic scheduling models and on the interface between these two approaches. The last two days were occupied by an Advanced Research Institute, where recent results and promising directions for future research, especially in the interface area, were discussed. Altogether, 37 lectures were delivered by 24 lecturers. They have all contributed to these proceedings, the first part of which deals with the Advanced Study Institute and the second part of which covers the Advanced Research Institute.
