Since the interaction between atoms and electromagnetic waves is characterized by many parameters other than the light intensity, such as frequency, iQnization potential, orbit time, etc., it is actually quite difficult to define what is exactly meant by the term 'super-intense'. Obviously the term does not have an absolute meaning, and intensity should always be viewed in relation to other properties of the system. An atom in a radiation field can thus best be described in terms of various ratios of the quantities involved. The nature of the system sometimes drastically changes if the value of one of these parameters exceeds a certain critical value, and the new regime could be called super-intense with respect to that parameter.

Some of the intricate events recorded in the following pages may be little known to the outside world or have not yet been revealed by others. What he has put down here has been carefully checked by him and is all backed up by firsthand sources. For example, on the eve of the March 19, 1926 Chungshan gunboat incident at Canton, an incident in which the Communists had plotted to kidnap General Chiang Kai-shek, then Commandant of the Whampoa Military Academy, someone had asked the General himself in person whether he was going back to Whampoa that day. Three telephone calls were made asking this question. In making a report of the incident after it was over, General Chiang did not identify who the individual was who was so persistent in ascertaining the General's movements on that momentous day, nor did he ever breathe a word of it even to his closest aides. Up to now few people know for sure who the person might have been.

Most of this increase has occurred since the beginning of the present century (Murozami et 01. , 1969), and taken into perspective, a typical individual living in the industrialized world sustai…ns a lead burden 500 times that of his prehistoric ancestors (Patterson, 1983). Lead is unique in being an environmental pollutant where the levels deemed clinically toxic are less than an order of magnitude from those that are normally encountered in the population. The clinical limit for lead exposure, 70 JLg Pb/tOO ml blood, is about three times the 'normal' value (in the range 15-30 JLg Pb/100ml blood). This small difference is remarkable from the toxicological standpoint. The key concept here is control of dis persal. The industrial actions of man bring contact with a wide variety of substances, some of which are poisonous or dangerous. In such cases pro tective measures are taken to keep hazardous exposure to a minimum. In the of lead compounds, stringent regulations are production and distribution enforced. The exception to this is in the dispersal of lead from vehicle exhausts following purchase from the petrol pump. Perhaps man's long standing acquaintance with lead in home and industry is responsible for a complacency which until only recently has been unquestioned. Beginning in the late 1960s, evidence began to accumulate suggesting that lead at relatively low levels of exposure might be causing negative effects on neurobiological function. 172 pp. Englisch.

In it we have tried to present the main lines of Soviet psycho logical theory, in particular, the philosophical principles on which that theory is founded…. There are surprisingly few books in English on Soviet psychology, or, indeed, in any Western European language. The works that exist usually take the form of symposia or are collections of articles translated from Soviet periodicals. The most important of these are Psychology in the Soviet Union (ed. by Brian Simon), Recent Soviet Psychology (ed. by Neil O'Connor) and Soviet Psychology, A Symposium (ed. by Ralf Winn). Raymond Bauer has also edited an interesting symposium entitled Some Views on Soviet Psychology. Only two systematic studies of Soviet psychology have been published to date: Joseph Wortis' Soviet Psychiatry and Raymond Bauer's The New Man in Soviet Psychology. Both are valuable introductions to Soviet psychology; Bauer's book, in particular, gives a good account of the debates on psychological theory in the Soviet Union in the nineteen twenties and -thirties. Both, however, are somewhat out of date. There are also a number of interesting articles written by Ivan D. London and Gregory Razran, which give general surveys of particular periods or aspects of Soviet psychology. These have been listed in the bibliography. 200 pp. Englisch.

Such problems come close to the ultimate goal of reaction dynamics of being able to determine experimentally and theoretically state-to-state cross sections and stereochemical effects under well defined and characterised conditions. There are many examples of highly selective and specific processes to be found in atmospheric and combustion chemistry and the production of population inversions amongst vibrational and electronic states lies at the heart of the development of chemical laser systems. Only when we can understand the fundamental processes that underlie the selectivity in the formation of products in a chemical reaction and the specific requirements of initial states of the reagents, can we expect to be able to develop the explanatory and predictive tools necessary to apply the subject to the development of new laser systems, efficient combustion schemes and specific methods of chemical synthesis, to the control of atmospheric pollution and to all problems in which it is necessary to direct the outcome of a chemical reaction in a specific way. The highlight of the scientific program proved to be an improvised session on basic mechanisms of slow potentials from the eye. Dr. R.H. Steinberg and his collaborators, together with Dr. G. Niemeyer initiated this part of the program. It was enthusiastically received, provided an informal atmosphere, stimulated a lively discussion and exchanged pro found information. The main purpose of the book is to show that most of the clinical problems encountered in daily practice can be dealt with effectively and satisfactorily on the basis of a good clinical history. To effect a transformation to equations with continuous or completely continuous operators, it is usually necessary to reduce the original problem to one involving integral equations. Here, negative and fractional powers of those unbounded differential operators which constitute 'principal parts' of the original problem, are used in an essential way. Next there is chosen or constructed a function space in which the corresponding integral oper ator possesses sufficiently good properties. Once such a space is found, the original problem can often be analyzed by applying general theorems (Fredholm theorems in the study of linear equations, fixed point principles in the study of non-linear equations, methods of the theory of cones in the study of positive solutions, etc.). It was felt at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research in Warsaw several years ago that an international meeting bringing together experts in various domains of plasticity and studying plastic behavior from different positions could be of use for further development of the discipline itself and for its service to society. The appropriate occasion for such a meeting sponsored by the Polish Academy of Sciences was provided by the 70th anniversary of Professor Wadaw Olszak. The idea of a fundamentals oriented symposium was favorably received by the scientific community over the world. Eminent scientists generously advised me as to the scope of the meeting and helped in shaping the program. It was eventually decided to concentrate the debates on a) physical foun dations of plasticity , b) thermodynamics of plastic and visco-plastic deform ation, c) experiments regarding plastic behavior, d) mathematical methods in plasticity, e) computer techniques suitable for solving important techno logical problems. Altogether, 37 lectures were delivered by 24 lecturers. They have all contributed to these proceedings, the first part of which deals with the Advanced Study Institute and the second part of which covers the Advanced Research Institute. Each part is preceded by an introduction, written by the editors. While confessing to a natural bias as organizers, we believe that the Institute has been a rewarding and enjoyable event for everyone concerned. As said in the title of the book the partioipa nts have presented their most recent views on the evolution of large structures and galaxies and the relevance of these questions on particle physics and cosmology. Among the llBny developments which are at the origin of the thirty five papers gathered here, three main themes have been touched on by several speakers during the workshop. They are (i) the influence of the mass of neutrinos and other 'inos' predicted by the 'Supersymmetry' theories, which are the more likely candidates for the hidden mass of the Universe, (ii) the dynamics of triaxial galaxies and (iii) the possible occurence of pregalactic stars with a debate on their hypothetioal nucleosynthetic role. Miny different views h3. ve been presented on these three topics (and many others) which prove the liveness of the physical cosmology. We know very well that our science of today is a science of specialists. Not only is it impossible for anyone person to assimilate the totality of human knowledge, it is impossible even to know ones own discipline perfectly thoroughly. Each year the presses of science pro duce a frightening quantity of printed paper. Even in very limited fields, new journals are created every day, devoted to extremely specialized, often very narrowly defined subjects.
