Neuware - Anyone making a study of the causes that led to the fall of the Chinese mainland into Communist hands will have to examine the long struggles between the two major rival parties in China, the Nationalists or the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communists. As the author once took a personal part in those struggles, he has assumed the task of giving an account of the facts as known to him. Some of the intricate events recorded in the following pages may be little known to the outside world or have not yet been revealed by others. What he has put down here has been carefully checked by him and is all backed up by firsthand sources. For example, on the eve of the March 19, 1926 Chungshan gunboat incident at Canton, an incident in which the Communists had plotted to kidnap General Chiang Kai-shek, then Commandant of the Whampoa Military Academy, someone had asked the General himself in person whether he was going back to Whampoa that day. Three telephone calls were made asking this question. In making a report of the incident after it was over, General Chiang did not identify who the individual was who was so persistent in ascertaining the General's movements on that momentous day, nor did he ever breathe a word of it even to his closest aides. Up to now few people know for sure who the person might have been.

Most of this increase has occurred since the beginning of the present century (Murozami et 01. , 1969), and taken into perspective, a typical individual living in the industrialized world sustains a lead burden 500 times that of his prehistoric ancestors (Patterson, 1983). Lead is unique in being an environmental pollutant where the levels deemed clinically toxic are less than an order of magnitude from those that are normally encountered in the population. The clinical limit for lead exposure, 70 JLg Pb/tOO ml blood, is about three times the 'normal' value (in the range 15-30 JLg Pb/100ml blood). Skalka, H. Nakano, H.S. Thompson, A.J. Packer, J.A. Parker, H.E. Kolder, V.M. Hermsen, M.L. Wolf, and Mr. A.1. Mallinson presented case reports and are herewith recognized for their contribution. The highlight of the scientific program proved to be an improvised session on basic mechanisms of slow potentials from the eye. Dr. R.H. Steinberg and his collaborators, together with Dr. G. Niemeyer initiated this part of the program. It was enthusiastically received, provided an informal atmosphere, stimulated a lively discussion and exchanged pro found information. Besides providing considerably simplified approaches to numerical methods, the ideas of functional analysis have also given rise to essentially new computation schemes in problems of linear algebra, differential and integral equations, nonlinear analysis, and so on. The general theory of approximate methods includes many known fundamental results. We refer to the classical work of Kantorovich; the investigations of projection methods by Bogolyubov, Krylov, Keldysh and Petrov, much furthered by Mikhlin and Pol'skii; Tikho nov's methods for approximate solution of ill-posed problems; the general theory of difference schemes; and so on. Its methods permit to devise metal processing, allow to assess safety of structures against collapse, make possible to estimate flow of bulk solids. The technological progress calls both for deeper understanding of sources of plastic deformation and for more rigorous description of mecha nisms of plastic motion. It was felt at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research in Warsaw several years ago that an international meeting bringing together experts in various domains of plasticity and studying plastic behavior from different positions could be of use for further development of the discipline itself and for its service to society. The appropriate occasion for such a meeting sponsored by the Polish Academy of Sciences was provided by the 70th anniversary of Professor Wadaw Olszak. The idea of a fundamentals oriented symposium was favorably received by the scientific community over the world. Eminent scientists generously advised me as to the scope of the meeting and helped in shaping the program. It was eventually decided to concentrate the debates on a) physical foun dations of plasticity , b) thermodynamics of plastic and visco-plastic deform ation, c) experiments regarding plastic behavior, d) mathematical methods in plasticity, e) computer techniques suitable for solving important techno logical problems. The first eight of the ten available days were devoted to an Advanced Study Insti tute, with lectures on the state of the art with respect to deter ministic and stochastic scheduling models and on the interface between these two approaches. The last two days were occupied by an Advanced Research Institute, where recent results and promising directions for future research, especially in the interface area, were discussed. Altogether, 37 lectures were delivered by 24 lecturers. They have all contributed to these proceedings, the first part of which deals with the Advanced Study Institute and the second part of which covers the Advanced Research Institute. Each part is preceded by an introduction, written by the editors. While confessing to a natural bias as organizers, we believe that the Institute has been a rewarding and enjoyable event for everyone concerned. They are (i) the influence of the mass of neutrinos and other 'inos' predicted by the 'Supersymmetry' theories, which are the more likely candidates for the hidden mass of the Universe, (ii) the dynamics of triaxial galaxies and (iii) the possible occurence of pregalactic stars with a debate on their hypothetioal nucleosynthetic role. Carr and William H. Beierwaltes were first to report (1962) successful external imaging of myocardial infarcts in dogs and in man using an Anger scintillation camera. They demonstrated that after intravenous administration of 86Rb or l3ICS an infarct was visualized as a 'cold spot', while 203Hg-labeled-chlormeridin resulted in a'hot-spot' image of the infarct. Since then, there have been major developmental improvements in avail able radionuclides, scintillation cameras and computer processing capabilities. In particular, the development of mobile gamma cameras opened the possi bility to obtain high quality images even at the bedside of critically ill patients. Since the development in 1974 of a new radiopharmaceutical, 20lTI and the application of 99mTc-pyrophosphate for myocardial imaging, these imaging agents are widely used for the detection of acute myocardial infarction. It was organized with the aim of providing students and young researchers with an up to date account of the structure and evolution of galaxies and was attended by 94 participants from 20 countries. The study of galaxies is one of the most important areas of contemporary astrophysics both for its intrinsic interest and because it is a prerequisite to a quantitative understanding of the structure of the universe. To profit maximally from the results, obtained from these different viewpoints each should take the work of the others into account. The need for intensive communication is, therefore, ever present. In 1969, in the field of auditory research, this need resulted in P10mp's initiative to organizing an international symposium 'Frequency analysis and periodicity perception in hearing'. Considering the lively discussions and the numerous references in literature to the proceedings of this Driebergen symposium, the meeting clearly fulfilled its need. It was clear at the time that this sort of symposium should be held regularly. This resulted in meetings in 1972 (Eindhoven), 1974 (Tutzing) and 1977 (Keele). At the meeting in Keele it was agreed that the next one should be held in 1980, again in the Nether lands. This began in the 1940's and since then the accelerated pace of ocean research has generated a large amount of data on the ocean environment - mostly through the work of academic and governmental scientific organizations around the globe. These new scientific disclosures confirmed the wide-spread occurrence of metal-bearing lumps on the deep ocean floor that hold great promise as an important new source of raw material.
