As early as 1889 DE VRIES had shown that various plant 'monstrosities' are inherited. His breeding experi ments with other plants involved the rediscovery of MENDEL'S laws and the resuscitation of MENDEL'S breeding methods, which had been in abeyance in the long period from 1865 to 1900. MENDEL began his crossing experiments in 1854, DE VRIES began his Oeno thera cultures in 1886. The genus Oenothera was thus the first after Pisum to be the subject of extensive genetic experiments. Thus was introduced the method now so widely pursued. It may be remembered also that DE VRIES drew the distinction between fluctuations and mutations, but he regarded all fluctuations or continuous variations as non-heritable. Both can be equated with the continuous and discontinuous variations of BATESON. DE VRIES' conception of mutations corresponds with the 'single variations' of DARWIN, except that he regarded each mutation as producing a new elementary species, now generally called microspe cies. He said in the introduction to his Mutationstheorie, that the characters of organisms are built up from units which are as sharply distinguished from each other as the molecules of chemistry. The most prominent astrophysisists - specialist in the field of stochastic dynamics - attended the conference. A broad scope of the problems related to the observed manifes tations of chaotic motions in galactic and stellar objects, with the involvement of basic theory and numerical modeling, were addressed. The idea (not so obvious, as we believe, to many astrophysicists) was to show that, while great progress in the field of stochastic mechanics was accomplished, the science of chaos in actually observed systems is only just being born. Basically, the situation described prompted the organizers to hold the meeting in order to discuss chaotic processes in real systems. It seemed worthwhile to begin these introductory remarks with a brief descrip tion of some events that preceeded the conference. It is conceptually and philosophically equivalent to neobiogeography. Nevertheless, its methods are somewhat different, since it is limited by the incompleteness of the fossil record. On the other hand, it has direct access to the time dimension, a key ingredient of organic evolution. Mesozoic benthonic mollusks, and especially bivalves, have a great potential for palaeobiogeographical analysis due to their commonly good preservation, abundance, diversity and high dispersion potential at the larval stage. From a merely descriptive point of view, the analysis of their distribution shows latitudinal gradients and distributional patterns, both at regional and global scales, which are the basis for the recognition of biochoremas or palaeobiogeographical units of different ranks. Moving forward towards a causalpalaeobiogeography, these organisms also provide interesting insight into particular biogeographical questions, such as bipolarity and its origin. The evolution in time of therecognized biochoremas can be discussed in relation to palaeoclimas and extinction events.
