Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Our view of our Galaxy has recently been undergoing an increasing divergence from the traditional standpoint. In this book ten authors discuss in eight chapters how the conceptions of the Milky Way have moved in new directions. Starting with the inner parsec and the Center of the Galaxy, the book gradually moves on to the bulge and its relation to the globular clusters and to the disk, of which the presence of a bar is argued. A new look on the HI distribution in the disk, a synthesis of molecular line surveys and the study of stellar populations are discussed in the last three chapters.

Pursuing answers to such questions is not only interesting and important in its own right, but also yields valuable insights in to the nature of morality. A distinguishing feature of the book is its unusually comprehensive treatment of the moral significance of other-interested considerations per se, of how these considerations are interrelated, and of where they should be located in more general moral theory. It will be of greatest interest to individuals with fairly well-developed philosophical interests and abilities -- to teachers and advanced students of moral philosophy in particular.

This is not a sUlprising view, considering that data storage is essentially the transfer of data between different times. The past decade has indeed seen rapidly growing interest in applying improved coding and detection techniques to magnetic data storage, a traditional approach to enhance performance of communication channels. Since its inception in the 1930's, the magnetic recording industry has achieved impressive progress in data capacity. This has been made possible mainly by innovations and advances in heads and media design. However, as the demand for higher storage capacity continues in the modem information era, a need arises to explore other possibilities to help meet the ever-growing demand. Advanced coding and detection are one such possibility, providing an efficient, cost-effective means to increase data capacity. In fact, with the advent of modem Ie technology which has enabled real-time implementation of increasingly complex signal processing algorithms, advanced coding and detection are rapidly becoming a major issue in the development of improved data storage products. While there have been remarkable advances in recent years in the areas of both coding and detection for data storage, this book focuses only on data detection, or the processing of readback waveforms to reproduce stored data, in conjunction with the traditional modulation coding method called run length-limited or (d,k) coding.

Neuware - Belgium is a small country, but its planning traditions are rooted in a heritage which has been greatly enriched by its central location in the West European community of nations. Medieval, Renaissance and industrial age planning and urban design gave Belgium many examples of architectural masterpieces especially in the city centers. During the post World War II period, Belgian planners and politicians legislated national planning laws that divided the country into 48 planning regions (also called sub-regions and sectors) and empowered the municipalities (communes) with potent legal instruments to direct land development in accordance with their plans. Preparation, amendment and execution of these plans in a democratic society with a strong laissezJaire tradition have been painstaking, but nonethe less, significant tangible results have been achieved. The purpose of this book is to explore and assess the successes and failure of Belgian planning and make this record available in English so that they may remain facets of Belgian planning. The general socio-economic and historical background is provided with a view to understanding the theoretical, legal, physical and selected topical aspects of Belgian planning. In doing so a multi-disciplinary approach has been taken and the authors have been selected from a variety of disciplines. Professor Louis Albrechts of the University of Leuven is a planning theorist. Ms. Brigitte Beernaert and Mr. Karel Vroom are practicing planners. Beernaert is also a planning historian. Legal and administrative backgrounds are represented by the planning experts, Dr.

Neuware - Inadequate investment in innovation is particularly costly in today's globally competitive environment where continued technological advancements are critical to sustaining economic prosperity. The government has a critical role in ensuring that society's general interest in innovation, and the public good associated with innovation, is represented in private-sector decision making. This can be accomplished through a variety of programs and initiatives that reward innovation at all levels. The various activities that make this possible fall into two general categories: (1) the creation and maintenance of a legal environment that encourages private sector investment in innovation (patents and the relaxation of antitrust); and (2) the provision of incentives to overcome the natural inclination of private parties to consider only their private benefits when choosing the level of innovation in which to invest (governmental grants and contracts to targeted tax incentives). The role of government, more specifically, can be found in three key areas: (1) funding of research and development performed in the private sector; (2) funding of Federal laboratory research activities and the effective transfer of that knowledge to the private sector; and (3) encouraging the industry-university collaboration in research and development. It is these three areas of research that generate technologies fundamental to increasing the rate of technological development in the private sector, and it is these areas that are the focus of this book.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Several years ago, we realized that the most prominent ideas that had been ex pressed about the origin and early evolution of the Metazoa seemed to have been developed chiefly by zoologists using evidence from modern species without reference to the fossil record. Paleontologists had, in fact, put forth their own ideas but the zoological and the paleontological evidence were about the problem, seldom considered together, especially by zoologists. We believed that the paleon tological documentation of the first Metazoa was too scattered, too obscure to Western readers, and much of it too recent to have been readily available to our colleagues in zoology. Whether or not that was entirely true, we thought that a single volume reviewing the fossil record of the earliest Metazoa would be useful to many in both paleontology and zoology, especially since so much new informa tion has been developed in the last few years. Some of this information has been summarized in general articles recently, but an overview of most of the field does not exist. We therefore organized this book in five parts so that the evidence could be placed in perspective and summarized and inferences made from it. Part I intro duces the previous hypotheses that have been proposed for the origin and early radiation of Metazoa. Part II consists of two summary chapters that set the sedi mentological, geochemical, and biological background to the known radiations of Metazoa.

Neuware - In recent decades eicosanoids have been attracting an increasing amount of attention as a result of their important physiological roles in many areas of biology and medicine. The eicosanoids comprise the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes and are products of arachidonic acid, an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid stored in tissue phospholipids. Disturbances of eicosanoids and their metabolic products play a regulatory role in many types of cell injuries and diseases. One of the most exciting areas of eicosanoid research pinpoints their participation in the control of cell proliferation and differentiation. Eicosanoids form a link between different fields of research into such areas as cancer, inflammation and radiation-induced injury. This link provided the impetus for the development of the conference series of which the present volume represents the proceedings of the Second International Conference, held in Berlin in October 1991.

Medieval literature is increasingly seen as an area of intense specialism which is to be treated differently from other areas of English Studies. The essays collected here try to overturn this perception in two ways. Firstly, there is a demonstration of the ways in which modern critical approaches and perspectives work with the medieval text. Secondly, the idea of the medieval is shown, historically, to be a discourse which has been given different symbolic values and served different social purposes. 161 pp. Englisch.

Boley on the occasion of his 65th birthday was held in Atlanta, Georgia during the Winter Annual Meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The papers presented during the Symposium by some of Professor Boley's former students and colleagues cover those areas of applied mechanics where most of his contributions have been made over the years. These papers have been written in tribute to Professor Boley's distinguished scientific career and out of genuine affection and respect for him. The present volume consists of those Symposium papers that belong to the areas of Dynamics and Stability and constitute recent advances in the field. A special issue of the Journal of Thermal Stresses has been reserved for publication of the Symposium papers on Thermal Stresses, under the editorship of Professor R. B. Hetnarski. The present volume begins with a biographical sketch and bibliography of Professor Boley, along with a list of his doctoral students. Thirteen papers on dynamics and stability follow. The first four papers deal with wave propagation and vibration studies in solids and structures. The next two papers study wave propagation in fluids, while the seventh paper is concerned with the dynamic response of random media. Two papers dealing with structural vibrations exhibiting instability and one dealing with dynamic buckling delamination are presented next. The last three papers are concerned with instability in solids and structures. 204 pp. Englisch.

In choosing papers, the Program Committee of the conference gave priority to studies in rapidly emerging areas of the growth and preparation of crystalS and crystalline films. The qualifications of the authors were also consid ered. This ensured that the material was of a high standard and that the problems discussed covered a wide range. These are the same criteria that, we hope, are typical of the volumes of this series. The articles of the present volume are divided into four sections: I. Processes on the growth surface. II. Molecular-beam epitaxy. III. Growth of crystals and films from solutions and fluxes. N. Growth of crystals from the melt. Following tradition, the series opens with three theoretical articles. These examine problems applicable to various crystallization media: instability of the crystallization front (for a more general case than before and for a comparatively complicated system, a solution), adsorption and migration of atoms and molecules (the analysis is made on a quantum-chemical level), and the kinetics of step and dislocation growth in the presence of surface anisotropy as well as impurity adsorption (several earlier known methods are summarized). The next two articles are experimental and methodical. 211 pp. Englisch.

The innovation and implementation of information technology has accelerated this change and made its effects more profoundly felt. Because of this, there is now a need to widen the debate on human-centred manufacturing systems to include broader issues such as industrial culture, international economies and global knowledge. Human Centred Systems in the Global Economy contains the proceedings of an international workshop held at Tokyo Keizai University which looked at the design of human-centred systems in the context of these technological and social changes. The workshop attracted contributions from internationally known researchers in Europe, Japan, the USA, South East Asia, Eastern Europe and the USSR. The resulting volume is unique in that it addresses the relationship of information technology to Japanese society as a whole, rather than concentrating on technical issues. The papers have been divided into three areas, covering the structure, dimensions, and policies and perspectives of the information society. Specific areas covered include: social and cultural shaping of technology, economic interdependence, technology and knowledge transfer, computer-aided design, management culture and communication technologies. Human Centred Systems in the Global Economy provides a comprehensive assessment of the debates on human-centred systems and will be of interest to people in a wide variety of disciplines including information technology, economic development, management science and related studies of social science and humanities. 288 pp. Englisch.

The aim of the workshop was to evaluate current methods of code generation and to indicate the main directions which future research is likely to take. It provided an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and had the added advantage of bringing together European and American experts who were unlikely to meet at less specialised gatherings. This volume contains 14 of the 30 papers presented at the Dagstuhl workshop. The papers deal mainly with the following four topics: tools and techniques for code generation, code generation for parallel architectures, register allocation and phase ordering problems, and formal methods and validations. Most of the papers assess the progress of on-going research work, much of which is published here for the first time, while others provide a review of recently completed projects. The volume also contains summaries of two discussion groups which looked at code generation tools and parallel architectures. As a direct result of one of these discussions, a group of the participants have collaborated to make a pure BURS system available for public distribution. This system, named BURG, is currently being beta-tested. Code Generation - Concepts, Tools, Techniques provides a representative summary of state-of-the-art code generation techniques and an important assessment of possible future innovations. The first partcontrasts work in knowledge engineering with approaches fromthe side of the 'soft sciences'. The second part deals withcase-based approaches in expert systems. Cognition researchand the cognitive adequacy of expert systems are discussedin the third part. Contributions from Canada, England,France, Switzerland, and the USA demonstrate how knowledgeengineering and cognitive science are woven togetherinternationally. 276 pp. Englisch.

It is firmlyrooted in mathematical logic, yet it is also immenselypractical, as a growing number of users in universitiesresearch institutes, and industry are realizing. Logicprogramming languages, specifically Prolog, have turned outto be ideal as prototyping and application developmentlanguages. This volume presents the proceedings of the Second LogicProgramming Summer School, LPSS'92. The First LogicProgramming Summer School, LPSS '90, addressed thetheoretical foundations of logic programming. This volumefocuses onthe relationship between theory and practice, andon practical applications. The introduction to the volume is by R. Kowalski, one of thepioneers in the field. The following papers are organizedinto sections on constraint logic programming, deductivedatabases and expert systems, processing of natural andformal languages, software engineering, and education. 340 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book gives a comprehensive account of traditional and more recent developments in macroeconomic theory. It is written primarily for students at the intermediate level. The book differs from the customary expositions in that the authors do not discuss topic by topic but orthodoxy by orthodoxy. Thus, the main approaches, like Classical theory, Keynesian theory, theory of portfolio selection, Monetarism, Rational Expectations theory, and Neokeynesian 'disequilibrium' theory are presented in historical order. Each of these approaches is substantiated and criticized in a self-contained chapter, and the authors have taken great pains to bring out the relations and differences between them. A mathematical appendix reviews those mathematical facts which are especially important for macroeconomic models and serves to make the text easy to read. 348 pp. Englisch.
