In order to understand and evaluate these stages in a proper way. it is important to develop a suitable theoretical framework. To that end. economists have applied dynamic mathematical techniques. such as optimal control theory. calculus of variations and dynamic programming to design and analyse dynamic models of the firm. In this way. the economic theory of the firm is extended to a dynamic context. Within the field of the dynamics of the firm this book - develops a general investment decision rule. based on the concept 'net present value of marginal investment'. which is applicable in deterministic dynamic models of the firm; - studies the influence of adjustment costs of investment on optimal dynamic firm behavior; - extends the stochastic dynamic theory of the firm by connecting it with a dynamic version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Das starrplastische Fließverhalten wurde mit Hilfe des Stoffgesetzes nach Lévy-Mises erfaßt (bei technischen Vorgängen der Massivumformung können die elastischen und temperaturbedingten Formänderungsanteile gegenüber den plastischen vernachlässigt werden). Die Anwendbarkeit des Simulationsverfahrens wurde an Beispielen zum Kalt- und Warmstauchen von Stahl- und Aluminiumquadern gezeigt. Direkte Vergleiche von berechneten mit experimentellen Untersuchungsergebnissen zeigten eine gute Übereinstimmung. Dazu wurde der zeitliche Temperaturverlauf im Stauchkörper an verschiedenen Stellen meßtechnisch erfaßt und mit den Simulationswerten verglichen. Weitere Vergleiche wurden anhand von Kraft-Weg-Verläufen, Werkstückkonturen und visioplastisch bestimmten Vergleichs-Formänderungsverteilungen durchgeführt. 156 pp. Englisch.

Brown, 1961 and 1966) and from the experiences of all three of us teaching a first-year university course in vale…ncy at Monash University. Our object has been to give enough of an historical introduction to quantum mechanics to enable a student to grasp the fundamental ideas without being subjected to much mathematical formalism. We have also tried to avoid making erroneous statements in the interest of simplicity (e. g' the widespread tendency to ignore the difference between 2Pl, 2po, 2p-l and 2px, 2py, 2p z) because these lead to irritation and confusion of the better students, when they proceed to further studies of chemical quantum mechanics. The topics we have chosen to expand upon-i. e. , energy levels of electrons in atoms, energetic considerations of bonding in diatomic molecules, and packing of ions in the simplest solid state structures we believe form a good basis for students to progress to more complicated systems in a qualitative way. Both space and the intended level ofthe book have necessitated that the experimental section on spectroscopic and diffrac tion methods be very introductory. Other papers were solicited in order…to provide a picture of the field as general as possible. Research on nested relations and complex objects originates in the late seventies. The motivation was to obtain data models and systems which would provide support for so-called complex objects or molecular structures, i.e., for hierarchically organized data, thereby overcoming severe shortcomings of the relational model. This theme ofresearch is now maturing. Systems based on those ideas are beginning to be available. Languages of various natures (algebras, calculi, graphical, logic-oriented) have been designed and a theory is slowly emerging. Finally, new developments in database technology and research are incorporating features of models involving complex objects. A variety of approaches is represented in this volume. The first three papers give overviews of major pioneering implementation efforts. The fourth paper is devoted to the important issue of implementation of storage structures. The next three papers propose excursions in the foundations of nested relations and complex objects. The following six contributions are all devoted to modeling of complex objects. One class of incomplete-data problems, which is relatively not well understood by statisticians, is that of merging micro-data files. Many Federal…agencies use the methodology of file-merging to create comprehensive files from multiple but incomplete sources of data. The main objective of this endeavor is to perform statistical analyses on the synthetic data set generated by file merging. In general, these analyses cannot be performed by analyzing the incomplete data sets separately. The validity and the efficacy of the file-merging methodology can be assessed by means of statistical models underlying the mechanisms which may generate the incomplete files. However, a completely satisfactory and unified theory of file-merging has not yet been developed This monograph is only a minor attempt to fill this void for unifying known models. Here, we review the optimal properties of some known matching strategies and derive new results thereof. However, a great number of unsolved problems still need the attention of very many researchers. One main problem still to be resolved is the development of appropriate inference methodology from merged files if one insists on using file merging methodology. If this monograph succeeds in attracting just a few more mathematical statisticians to work on this class of problems, then we will feel that our efforts have been successful. 164 pp. Englisch.

The first is to provide an overview of existing knowledge about competition. The second is to organize this knowledge in such a way that new research paths are suggested. Such a treatment of…competition is badly needed. Although there is a voluminous literature on the topic there is no recent synthesis to which experienced researchers or new students may turn. This is my attempt to provide such an overview. I have tried not only to summarize what is known, but also to stress the unknowns in the hope that some new and innovative research will result. A book such as this faces two challenges at the outset: the sheer volume of the literature, and the presence of established research traditions which determine how that literature is to be interpreted and understood. The literature on competition is as vast and diverse as beetles in the biosphere. The task is to find a mapping, assigning a space-time coordinate to each event, so that causality is not violated and the solution is 'good'. Previous work in the area, if it provided any formalism at all, has relied mainly on uniform recurrence equations, extensions thereof, or on purely graph-theoretic formulations. In this project algebra is used instead and the close connection with single-assignment languages is stressed. Thus it is possible to generalize previous work and to give simple characterizations of the type of algorithms that can be implemented with space-time mappings. The results presented can be applied to hardware construction and compiler techniques for parallel computers. 276 pp. Englisch.

In the intervening time, there have been numerous developments in cancer chemotherapy and in order… to cover these the majority of the text has been completely revised and rewritten. In addition, two new chapters have been introduced, one on the safe handling of cytotoxic drugs and the other on biological response modifiers. In order to incorporate this new information without any undue increase in the length of the text the chapters on a combined approach to treatment have been omitted. This is not because interdisciplinary collaboration is no longer considered important but is a reflection of the fact that, in most centres, it has become the norm in cancer management and its central role in successful treatment no longer needs to be stressed quite so strongly. The four chapters in the last edition which dealt with the team approach to cancer therapy have been replaced by a single chapter on the place of chemotherapy in the overall treatment of cancer. One class of incomplete-data problems, which is relatively not well understood by statisticians, is that of merging micro-data files. Many Federal agen…cies use the methodology of file-merging to create comprehensive files from multiple but incomplete sources of data. The main objective of this endeavor is to perform statistical analyses on the synthetic data set generated by file merging. In general, these analyses cannot be performed by analyzing the incomplete data sets separately. The validity and the efficacy of the file-merging methodology can be assessed by means of statistical models underlying the mechanisms which may generate the incomplete files. However, a completely satisfactory and unified theory of file-merging has not yet been developed This monograph is only a minor attempt to fill this void for unifying known models. Here, we review the optimal properties of some known matching strategies and derive new results thereof. However, a great number of unsolved problems still need the attention of very many researchers. One main problem still to be resolved is the development of appropriate inference methodology from merged files if one insists on using file merging methodology.
