Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -From the Preface: 'This book was written for the active reader. The first part consists of problems, frequently preceded by definitions and motivation, and sometimes followed by corollaries and historical remarks. The second part, a very short one, consists of hints. The third part, the longest, consists of solutions: proofs, answers, or contructions, depending on the nature of the problem. This is not an introduction to Hilbert space theory. Some knowledge of that subject is a prerequisite: at the very least, a study of the elements of Hilbert space theory should proceed concurrently with the reading of this book.' 396 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The enigma of Soviet society is nowhere more strikingly manifested than in its economic relations with the outside world. Western business people, even those with representative offices in Moscow, often describe their negotiations with the Soviets as a veritable black-box affair. Offers for purchase and sale are funneled into the bureaucracy, usually via the Ministry of Foreign Trade, where they are digested for very long periods of time. When a response emerges, little is usually known about the level at which decisions were made, and even less is known about the criteria that were employed to make them. In the abstract, at least, foreign trade decision making in the Western market economies is a rather simple exercise. An American consumer will purchase a Toyota rather than a comparable Chrysler if its price, expressed in dollars at the market exchange rate, is lower. The influences of governmental tariffs, quantitative restrictions, foreign exchange controls, 'buy American' policies, and the like, are usually of only secondary importance. In contrast, the Soviet consumer, whether an individual or an industrial enterprise, does not generally have the authority to order the importation of goods or services. That authority is concentrated at the top of Soviet society and administered through a labyrinthine system of overlapping bureaucratic agencies. Furthermore, those Soviet agencies cannot respond to price signals in the same way as the American consumer can, because Soviet domestic prices and exchange rates are themselves set rather arbitrarily by governmental agencies.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - R. VANFURTH Infection is an inseparable part of communal life, and infections are more common and more severe in hospital communi ties because the sick are more easily infected than the healthy. However, even though progress in the medical sciences has meant that many more patients suftering from relatively severe diseases can be helped at present, the use of more sophisticated and complex treatment leads to impairment of the defence mechanisms in more patients than was the case ten to twenty years ago, and these patients are also more prone to develop an infection. Two questions are particularly relevant in this context. 1) Under what conditions do hospital infections occur Defects of host defence mechanisms are of great importance in this respect. Such defects can be due to the disease or to the treatment given to the patient. 2) Which of the host defence mechanisms can be affected by a stay in the hospital Among the factors involved in the host defence against infections (Table I), a number are especially important in this respect. For instance, venepuncture, indwelling catheters, and surgery all cause a breach in the surface structures. Anaesthesia causes temporary impairment of mechanical factors. Vascularization may be defective -- especial ly in the aged and patients with diabetes mellitus -- and this may complicate the healing of wounds in the skin and mucous membranes after surgery.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This publication contains the proceedings of a Seminar 'Beef production from different dairy breeds and dairy beef crosses', held in Ireland on April 13-15, 1981, under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) as part of the European Communities (EC) programme for beef production research. The CEC wishes to thank those representatives of Ireland who took responsibility for the organisation and conduct of this Seminar, notably Professor E.P. Cunningham, Dr. G.J. More O'Ferrall (local organiser), Dr. Patricia McGlaughlin and In particular, thanks are due to Dr. McGlaughlin Mr. R. Barlow. and Mr. Barlow for their recording of the discussions. Professor Ian Gordon of the Faculty of Agriculture, kindly made available the facilities of Lyons House, University College, for the Seminar. Thanks are also accorded to the Chairmen of the Sessions Professor D. Smidt, Dr. R.B. Thiessen, Professor A. Neimann Sorensen, Professor E.P. Cunningham, and to all the participants who presented papers and took part in the discussions. X OBJECTIVES The aims of the Seminar were to review recent comparisons of Holstein and Friesian strains with other dairy breeds for beef and veal production; to look at the use of beef breeds for crossing on dairy herds in various EEC countries, and to examine the economic and genetic balance between milk and beef traits in dual purpose bull testing and selection.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -These notes are an elaboration of the first part of a course on foliations which I have given at Strasbourg in 1976 and at Tunis in 1977. They are concerned mostly with dynamical sys tems in dimensions one and two, in particular with a view to their applications to foliated manifolds. An important chapter, however, is missing, which would have been dealing with structural stability. The publication of the French edition was re alized by-the efforts of the secretariat and the printing office of the Department of Mathematics of Strasbourg. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The seventh volume of Water-in-Plants Bibl iography includes papers in al I fields of plant water relations research which appeared during the year 1981 - from theoreti cal considerations about the state of water in cel Is and its membrane transport to drought resistance of plants or physiological significance of irrigation. In addition to papers devoted entirely to plant water relations, papers on other topics are in cluded if they contain data on plant hydration level, water vapour efflux, rate of water uptake or water transport, etc., or if they contain valuable methodological in formation (measurement of selected microcl imatic factors, soi I moisture etc.). We have tried to cover fully the relevant papers which have been publ ished in the most important scientific periodicals and books. Articles appeared in local jour nals, mimeographed booklets, abstracts of thesis and of symposia contributions, etc., were chosen mostly from reprints received directly from authors. The courtesy of those authors who have already suppl ied us with reprints and I ists of their publ ica tions is highly appreciated. The manuscript is usually prepared in May and June of the year fol lowing the year which it covers. Unfortunately some reprints come later and thus the respective references appear in the fol lowing volume, with one year de lay. To maximize the value of the bib I iography the references are arranged alphabetic ally according to the authors' names, and each volume is provided with three indexes. 176 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume studies the development of Marxian value theory in a modernised context. The controversy about Marx's value theory is now in its third stage. The first stage was marked by Bohm-Bawerk, and the second by Samuelson soon after the World War II. In this second stage, the basic results in Marx's economics were examined and formulated by Okishio and Morishima-Seton in the Leontief economy case. The third stage was opened by Morishima, who developed the Marxian theory of value on the ba~is of von Neumann's theory. In Chapters I through IV, a concise but comprehensive overview of the pOints in Marx's value theory is presented from the Leontief to von Neumann economy cases. Based on the above, the two subjects, namely, the reduction of skilled labour and heterogeneous labour and the Marxian theory of differential rent, are developed in Chapters V and VI respectively. These topics, especially the reduction problem, seem not to have been duly discussed in other literature. The main concern of our discussion, in Chapters I through V in particular, is the so-called fundamental Marxian theorem and the dual dualities, i.e., the duality of price and quanti~y systems on the basis of the duality of value and price. Th. ~uthor also tried to shed light on superhistorical aspects of Marxian vaiue theory, which ought to give a clue to the insight of the commodity production in general. The author acknowledges thanks to Professors S.Koshimura, A. 184 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The aso theory developed in Chapters 8 - 12 presumes that the tan gent cones are linear spaces. In the present chapter we collect a few natural examples where the tangent cone fails to be a linear space. These examples are to remind the reader that an extension of the theo ry to convex tangent cones is wanted. Since the results are not needed in the rest of the book, we are more generous ab out regularity condi tions. The common feature of the examples is the following: Given a pre order (i.e., a reflexive and transitive order relation) on a family of p-measures, and a subfamily i of order equivalent p-measures, the fa mily ~ consists of p-measures comparable with the elements of i. This usually leads to a (convex) tangent cone 1f only p-measures larger (or smaller) than those in i are considered, or to a tangent co ne con sisting of a convex cone and its reflexion about 0 if both smaller and larger p-measures are allowed. For partial orders (i.e., antisymmetric pre-orders), ireduces to a single p-measure. we do not assume the p-measures in ~ to be pairwise comparable. 328 pp. Englisch.

In Copenhagen the interest in statistics on counting processes was sparked by a visit by Odd Aalen in 1976. The Aalen theory is a fine example of how advanced probability theory may be used to develop a povlerful, and for applications very re levant, statistical technique. Aalen's work relies quite heavily on the 'theorie generale des processus' developed primarily by the French school of probability the ory. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This third edition of Genetic Counseling has been thoroughly revised to reflect current practice. In particular, the chapter on prenatal diagnosis (Chapter 10) has been largely rewritten and considerably expanded, reflecting the rapid develop ment in this field and its increasing medical importance. This chapter provides a detailed description of the alpha-fetoprotein test and a brief description of ultrasonography for the diagnosis of morphologic defects. Further, we discuss fetoscopy and the sampling of fetal blood with the aid of a fetoscope. In this as in past editions, these descriptions are not meant as working instructions for actual practice, but rather as background for the general practitioner who is dealing with the problems of genetic counseling. We have added a chapter (Chapter 7) on the use of conditional probability (Bayes Principle) for the calculation of more exact specific risk figures. It is true that the daily practice of medicine sees far fewer situations in which these methods can reasonably be applied than some theoreticians like to think. However, the usefulness of these methods has recently increased, especially in cases of X-chromosomal recessive diseases where the termination of a preg nancy, if the fetus has been ascertained to be male and if the mother is 'most probably' heterozygous, has become more commonplace. With such a trend, the degree of probability must be determined as exactly as possible. 204 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In recent years, geometry has played a lesser role in undergraduate courses than it has ever done. Nevertheless, it still plays a leading role in mathematics at a higher level. Its central role in the history of mathematics has never been disputed. It is important, therefore, to introduce some geometry into university syllabuses. There are several ways of doing this, it can be incorporated into existing courses that are primarily devoted to other topics, it can be taught at a first year level or it can be taught in higher level courses devoted to differential geometry or to more classical topics. These notes are intended to fill a rather obvious gap in the literature. It treats the classical topics of Euclidean, projective and hyperbolic geometry but uses the material commonly taught to undergraduates: linear algebra, group theory, metric spaces and complex analysis. The notes are based on a course whose aim was two fold, firstly, to introduce the students to some geometry and secondly to deepen their understanding of topics that they have already met. What is required from the earlier material is a familiarity with the main ideas, specific topics that are used are usually redone. 124 pp. Englisch.

Of the four authors, only Coxeter and myself are still alive, and we two are the authors of the whole text of the book, in which any signs of immaturity may perhaps be regarded leniently on noting that both of us were still in our twenties when it was written. N either of the others was a professional mathematician. Flather died about 1950, and Petrie, tragically, in a road accident in 1972. Petrie's part in the book consisted in the extremely difficult drawings which consti tute the left half of each of the plates (the much simpler ones on the right being mine). A brief biographical note on Petrie will be found on p. 32 of Coxeter's Regular Polytopes (3rd. ed. , Dover, New York, 1973); and it may be added that he was still a schoolboy when he discovered the regular skew polygons that are named after him, and are the occasion for the note on him in Coxeter's book. (Coxeter also was a schoolboy when some of the results for which he will be most remembered were obtained; he and Petrie were schoolboy friends and used to work together on polyhedron and polytope theory. ) Flather's part in the book consisted in making a very beautiful set of miniature models of all the fifty-nine figures. These are still in existence, and in excellent preservation. 60 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This is a textbook written for use in a graduate-level course for students of mechanics and engineering science. It is designed to cover the essential features of modern variational methods and to demonstrate how a number of basic mathematical concepts can be used to produce a unified theory of variational mechanics. As prerequisite to using this text, we assume that the student is equipped with an introductory course in functional analysis at a level roughly equal to that covered, for example, in Kolmogorov and Fomin (Functional Analysis, Vol. I, Graylock, Rochester, 1957) and possibly a graduate-level course in continuum mechanics. Numerous references to supplementary material are listed throughout the book. We are indebted to Professor Jim Douglas of the University of Chicago, who read an earlier version of the manuscript and whose detailed suggestions were extremely helpful in preparing the final draft. We also gratefully acknowedge that much of our own research work on va ri at i ona 1 theory was supported by the U. S. Ai r Force Offi ce of Scientific Research. We are indebted to Mr. Ming-Goei Sheu for help in proofreading. Finally, we wish to express thanks to Mrs. Marilyn Gude for her excellent and painstaking job of typing the manuscript. This revised edition contains only minor revisions of the first. Some misprints and errors have been corrected, and some sections were deleted, which were felt to be out of date. 328 pp. Englisch.
