Each presentation has as its goal some aspect of the improvement, or optimization, of radiotherapy. This book is a collection of current ideas concerned with the optimization of human cancer radiotherapy. It is hoped that readers will build on this collection and develop superior approaches for the understanding of the ways to improve therapy. The author owes a special debt of thanks to Kathy Prindle who breezed through the typing of this book with considerable dexterity. Frank graduated in Medicine at St B…artholomew's Hospital Medical College in 1949 at the early age of 22. Born in Lancaster, his one wish was to return to the North. He held house appointments at Preston, spent his two years of National Service in the Royal Air Force and attained the rank of Squadron Leader. While on National Service, his interests turned to anesthetics, and as Senior Medical Officer on H.M. Troopship 'Devonshire', he developed a love for the sea. Convinced that anesthesia was his career, Frank came to Liverpool and attended the University course in this speciality. The vast experi ence he gained in anesthesia in the Liverpool Hospitals and on the Thoracic, Cardiac, Neurosurgical and Paediatric units, ensured his continued interest in resuscitation and neonatal anesthesia, which led him to design a new tracheostomy tube when he was at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. He became Lecturer in Anesthesia at the University of Liverpool and later Consultant Anesthetist to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, and then to the Burnley group of hospitals and to Lancaster in 1966. 320 pp. Englisch.

The objective of these symposia is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas of common concern to computer scientists and statisticians. The se…ssions of the 13th Symposium were held in the Pittsburgh Hilton Hotel, Gateway Center, Pittsburgh. Following established custom the 13th Symposium had organized workshops on various topics of interest to participants. The workshop format allowed the invited speakers to present their material variously as formal talks, tutorial sessions and open discussion. The Symposium schedule was also the customary one. Registration opened in late afternoon of March 11, 1981 and continued during the opening mixer held that evening: The formal opening of the Symposium was on the morning of March 12. The opening remarks were followed by Bradley Efron's address 'Statistical Theory and the Computer.' The rest of the daily schedule was three concurrent workshops in the morning and three in the afternoon with contributed poster sessions during the noon break. A weaker result, sufficient nevertheless for our purposes, is proved in Chapter 5, where the reader will also find some discussion of the need for a more powerful in variance theorem and a summary of the proof… of such a theorem. Secondly the emphasis in this book is on low-dimensional examples the graphs and surfaces of the title since it is there that geometrical intuition has its roots. The goal of the book is the investigation in Chapter 9 of the properties of graphs in surfaces; some of the problems studied there are mentioned briefly in the Introduction, which contains an in formal survey of the material of the book. Many of the results of Chapter 9 do indeed generalize to higher dimensions (and the general machinery of simplicial homology theory is avai1able from earlier chapters) but I have confined myself to one example, namely the theorem that non-orientable closed surfaces do not embed in three-dimensional space. One of the principal results of Chapter 9, a version of Lefschetz duality, certainly generalizes, but for an effective presentation such a gener- ization needs cohomology theory. Apart from a brief mention in connexion with Kirchhoff's laws for an electrical network I do not use any cohomology here. Thirdly there are a number of digressions, whose purpose is rather to illuminate the central argument from a slight dis tance, than to contribute materially to its exposition. 348 pp. Englisch.
