In this study the informal economy has been defined statistically as that part of the non-registered national product…which involves monet ary transactions. Bartering activities and transactions outside the market are thus left completely out of consideration. The same is true of those market transactions which, despite their illegal or underground nature, are already included in the national pro duct published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) because of its measuring methods. According to the CBS (1983a) these transactions account for 5 to 10% of national income. This means that the estimate of the informal economy will be smal ler when the statistical registration is more comprehensive and a wider starting point is chosen than the market. The term underground economy as used in a fiscal context therefore means something else than the statistical term informal economy used in this study I. The phenomenon of the informal economy emanates partly from the usual measuring conventions; at the same time it is also an expression of economic behav iour motivated by economic incentives and conditions which aims to keep such econ omic dealing concealed. This study attempts to quantifY the size of that informal economy partly on the basis of economic behaviour. Observable monetary trans actions were the main starting point. 76 pp. Englisch.

The molecules of a pure chemical compound form generally an ensemble of molecular individuals that differ in geometry and energy. Thus it is generally impossible to represent a chemical compund adequately by the geo metry of a rigid molecular model. In modern stereochemistry it is often necessary to analyze molecular relation within ensembles and families of stereoisomers and permutation isomers, including molecules whose geometric features are changing with time. Accordingly, there is definitely a need for new types of ideas, concepts, theories and techniques that are usable beyond the scope of customary methodology. Historically, this wa…ter source has generally been regarded as pristine. However, in recent years, contamination of ground water by industrial products has become a problem of growing concern. During the past four decades, the variety and quantity of organic chemicals produced in the U. S. has steadily increased. Currently, more than 40,000 different organic compounds are being manufactured, trans ported, used and eventually disposed of in the environment (Wilson, et !l (1981'. Production and consumption of petroleum products has also risen in this same time period. Many of these industrial compounds are highly toxic and slightly water soluble. Thus, they pose a poten tial threat to large volumes of groundwater if they are somehow intro duced into the subsurface. Increased production of chemicals implies the increased risk of accidental spills or leakage to the soil, and indeed, the literature abounds with contamination case histories. 2 Incidences of petroleum contamination of groundwater have been documented by many authors. There are a number of books devoted to clinical methodo logy which tell the student the questions which he must as…k and describe the physical signs that he should seek. The authors of these books rarely devote more than a page or two to a job description and advice on how to acquire clinical skills. Although a sound knowledge of the facts is essential, a good doctor differs from a bad doctor more by his attitude and craftsmanship than by his knowledge. These important matters receive scant attention in the textbooks because the authors regard them as part of the spoken tradition which is taught at the bedside or in the clinics and is absorbed by watching clinicians while they are dealing with patients. The image of the doctor who greets patients with his pen poised over a prescription pad, and the calls for holistic medicine, imply that a number of students do not pick up the relevant attitudes and skills on the way. That this feeling is shared by the profession itself is suggested by the forma tion of a society to promote the treatment of the whole patient, and another for the promotion of humanism in cardiology. Good doctors have been treating the whole patient humanely since the profession was founded, and I find it shocking that it is thought that such societies are necessary. 196 pp. Englisch.

On the one hand, we want to collect in one place many of the recent results on the exist ence and asymptotic behavior of solutions of certain classes of singularly perturbed nonline…ar boundary value problems. On the other, we hope to raise along the way a number of questions for further study, mostly ques tions we ourselves are unable to answer. The presentation involves a study of both scalar and vector boundary value problems for ordinary dif ferential equations, by means of the consistent use of differential in equality techniques. Our results for scalar boundary value problems obeying some type of maximum principle are fairly complete; however, we have been unable to treat, under any circumstances, problems involving 'resonant' behavior. The linear theory for such problems is incredibly complicated already, and at the present time there appears to be little hope for any kind of general nonlinear theory. Our results for vector boundary value problems, even those admitting higher dimensional maximum principles in the form of invariant regions, are also far from complete. We offer them with some trepidation, in the hope that they may stimulate further work in this challenging and important area of differential equa tions. Neuware -This study provides an estimate of the size of the informal economy in the Nether lands in the period 1965-1982. In this study the informal economy has been defined statistically as that part of the non-registered national product whic…h involves monet ary transactions. Bartering activities and transactions outside the market are thus left completely out of consideration. The same is true of those market transactions which, despite their illegal or underground nature, are already included in the national pro duct published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) because of its measuring methods. According to the CBS (1983a) these transactions account for 5 to 10% of national income. This means that the estimate of the informal economy will be smal ler when the statistical registration is more comprehensive and a wider starting point is chosen than the market. The term underground economy as used in a fiscal context therefore means something else than the statistical term informal economy used in this study I. The phenomenon of the informal economy emanates partly from the usual measuring conventions; at the same time it is also an expression of economic behav iour motivated by economic incentives and conditions which aims to keep such econ omic dealing concealed. This study attempts to quantifY the size of that informal economy partly on the basis of economic behaviour. The molecules of a pure chemical compound form generally an ensemble of molecular individuals that differ in geometry and energy. Thus it is generally impossible to represent a chemical compund adequately by the geo metry of a rigid molecular model. In modern stereochemistry it is often necessary to analyze molecular relation within ensembles and families of stereoisomers and permutation isomers, including molecules whose geometric features are changing with time. Accordingly, there is definitely a need for new types of ideas, concepts, theories and techniques that are usable beyond the scope of customary methodology. On the one hand, we want to collect in one place many of the recent results on the exist ence and asymptotic behavior of solutions of certain classes of singularly perturbed nonlinear b…oundary value problems. On the other, we hope to raise along the way a number of questions for further study, mostly ques tions we ourselves are unable to answer. The presentation involves a study of both scalar and vector boundary value problems for ordinary dif ferential equations, by means of the consistent use of differential in equality techniques. Our results for scalar boundary value problems obeying some type of maximum principle are fairly complete; however, we have been unable to treat, under any circumstances, problems involving 'resonant' behavior. The linear theory for such problems is incredibly complicated already, and at the present time there appears to be little hope for any kind of general nonlinear theory. Our results for vector boundary value problems, even those admitting higher dimensional maximum principles in the form of invariant regions, are also far from complete. We offer them with some trepidation, in the hope that they may stimulate further work in this challenging and important area of differential equa tions. Historically, this water…source has generally been regarded as pristine. However, in recent years, contamination of ground water by industrial products has become a problem of growing concern. During the past four decades, the variety and quantity of organic chemicals produced in the U. S. has steadily increased. Currently, more than 40,000 different organic compounds are being manufactured, trans ported, used and eventually disposed of in the environment (Wilson, et !l (1981». Production and consumption of petroleum products has also risen in this same time period. Many of these industrial compounds are highly toxic and slightly water soluble. Thus, they pose a poten tial threat to large volumes of groundwater if they are somehow intro duced into the subsurface. Increased production of chemicals implies the increased risk of accidental spills or leakage to the soil, and indeed, the literature abounds with contamination case histories. 2 Incidences of petroleum contamination of groundwater have been documented by many authors. Although a sound knowledge of the facts is essential, a good doctor differs from a bad doctor more by his attitude and craftsmanship than by his knowledge. These important matters receive scant attention in the textbooks because the authors regard them as part of the spoken tradition which is taught at the bedside or in the clinics and is absorbed by watching clinicians while they are dealing with patients. The image of the doctor who greets patients with his pen poised over a prescription pad, and the calls for holistic medicine, imply that a number of students do not pick up the relevant attitudes and skills on the way. That this feeling is shared by the profession itself is suggested by the forma tion of a society to promote the treatment of the whole patient, and another for the promotion of humanism in cardiology.
