Da hier U (g) zur Algebra der polynomialen Funktionen auf dem Dualraum g von 9 isomorph ist, werden diese maximalen Ideale nach dem schwachen Nullstellensatz durch die Punkte von g klassifiziert. Jede irreduzible Darstellung von gist demnach eindimensional, jede Linearform auf 9 legt soleh eine Darstellung fest. Fur andere Lie-Algebren sind die Verhiiltnisse viel komplizierter. 1st 9 zum Beispiel einfach, so ist bisher nur fUr g=Glz eine Klassifikation der irreduzib len Darstellungen bekannt (vorgelegt von R Block), die jedoch weit davon ent femt ist, iihnlich explizit wie die im kommutativen Fall zu sein. Fur noch gro Bere Lie-Algebren scheint selbst eine solehe Klassifikation nicht erreichbar zu sein. Es scheint daher sinnvoll, zuniichst ein einfacheres Problem zu losen, das im kommutativen Fall mit dem alten zusammenfiillt. Dies ist die Untersuchung der primitiven Ideale von U(g), das heiBt der Annullatoren in U(g) der einfa chen U(g)-Moduln. Man mag hoffen, daraus auch Informationen uber die moglichen einfachen Moduln zu erhalten.

Owing to the peculiar water regime, paddy soils possess quite different properties physically, chemically and biologically as compared with those of upland soils. Such properties have a conspicuous effect on fertility and management practice of paddy field. For the purpose of summing up the past work and opening up new prospects, a 'Symposium on Paddy Soils' was organized under the auspices of Academia Sinica, held on October 19-24, 1980 in Nanjing, which was followed by a seven-day paddy soil excursion in the lower Changjiang Delta. In addition to 120 Chinese soil scientists, 56 guests coming from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania attended the symposium on invitation. A total of 110 papers were presented either orally or by poster. During the intervening period, the signi ficance of carbon monoxide chemistry has become even more evident. The…oil crisis and the ever-present awareness of the constant depletion of the oil reserves have both contributed to a surge in activity. The fact that coal will once again replace oil in the near future as a feedstock source has been an impetus for new efforts in the field of carbon monoxide chemistry. Moreover, older almost neglected processes such as the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis have become a focal point for new activities. Therefore, the time was ripe to fundamentally revise 'Carbon Monoxide in Organic Synthesis' and to complete its coverage by introducing the chapters 'Homo logation' and 'Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation'. However, other important sectors of carbon monoxide chemistry such as the con version of synthesis gas to methanol or higher alcohols were excluded. These are treated in the book 'Chemierohstoffe aus Kohle', which devotes considerable attention to these syntheses. I would like to thank Drs. As is well…known, the former consists in setting up commutation relations among the canonical variables (of finite degrees of freedom) which are defined originally in classical mechanics, and the latter consists in doing the same among field variables. In our opinion, however, the above order does not necessarily reflect that of physical importance. In fact, a close look at the theoretical that the latter plays a more fundamental role structure immediately reveals than the former in various respects. First, the former can be derived from the latter, and second, the assumptions that have to be made in the former, e. g. the spin-statistics connection, can be justified in the latter on the basis of its own theory. Neuware -In 1985, Kary Mullis was driving late at night through the flowering buckeye to the ancient California redwood forest, cogitating upon new ways to sequence DNA. Instead he came upon a way to double the number of specific DNA modules, a…nd to repeat the process essentially indefinitely. 1 He thought of using two oligonucleotide sequences, oppositely oriented, and a DNA polymerase enzyme, to double the number of DNA targets. Each product would thene become the target for the next reaction, effectively yielding a product which doubled in quantity with each repeated cycle. Like the chain reaction leading to nuclear fission, with each cycle event each initial reactant (neutron or DNA molecule) yields two similar products, each of which can serve as the initial reactant. The invention of this exponentially increasing amplification system quickly became known as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The tremendous sensitivity of PCR ultimately resides in the necessity for each of two specific oligonucleotide annealing reactions to occur at the same time in the proper orientation. The DNA annealing reaction is a very specific reaction. Single genes have been detected by hybridization of a DNA probe to chromosome preparations together with sensitive fluorescence microscopy. This is the equivalent to detecting a gene present in a single copy per cell genome. During the past decade our knowledge on the…microenvironment of nerve cells has expanded. The conception that the microenvironment of neurones comprises a fluid with a relatively simple and stable composition is no longer accepted; the microenvironment is now envisaged as a dynamic structure whose composition, shape, and volume changes, thereby significantly influencing neuronal function and the trans mission of information in the nervous system. The modern conception of the neuronal microenvironment is based on the results of research over the last 20 years. The extracellular space (ECS) is comprehended not only as a relatively stable microenvironment containing neurones and glial cells (Bernard 1878), but also as a channel for communica tion between them. The close proximity of the neuronal elements in the CNS and the narrowness of the intercellular spaces provides a basis not only for interaction between the elements themselves, but also between the elements and their microenvironment. Substances which can cross the cell membranes can easily find their way through the microenvironment to adjacent cellular elements. In this way the microenvironment can assure non-synaptic com munication between the relevant neurones. Since these nonlinear excitations often dominate the transport and response properties of the systems in which they exist, accurate modeling of their effects is essential to interpreting a wide range of physical phenomena. Further, the dramatic de velopments in 'deterministic chaos', including the recognition that even simple nonlinear dynamical systems can produce seemingly random temporal evolution, have similarly demonstrated that an understanding of chaotic dynamics is vital to an accurate interpretation of the behavior of many physical systems. As a conse quence of these two developments, the study of nonlinear phenomena has emerged as a subject in its own right. During these same three decades, similar progress has occurred in understand ing the effects of 'disorder'. Stimulated by Anderson's pioneering work on 'dis ordered' quantum solid state materials, this effort has also grown into a field that now includes a variety of classical and quantum systems and treats 'disorder' arising from many sources, including impurities, random spatial structures, and stochastic applied fields. In fact, the Auger process, which is a multi-electron process, and which leaves the sample in a doubly (or higher) ionized state, is an invaluable probe for investigating excited states and, in particular, electron (or hole) correlation effects. This collaboration lasted 45 years. I am very grateful that this volume is dedi cated to the memory of Elizabeth. The preceding conferences were organized at Saint Maxime…and Paris in 1972, at the University of Nottingham in 1975, and at the Brown University Providence/Rhode Island in 1979. The Stuttgart conference, like the preceding conferences, was mainly con cerned with 'propagating' high-frequency acoustic phonons, mechanical waves and heat up to the lattice limiting frequency. Lattice dynamics, optical pho nons, phase transitions, etc., were included as far as they are involved in acoustical phonon scattering, propagation and generation. In this context the conference covered all aspects of acoustical phonon physics, especially generation of phonons, propagation, scattering and detection. Since acoustic phonons participate in most energy-transfer processes in solids and liquids, the field of interest is growing rapidly. Therefore exciting new developments of acoustic phonon physics could be presented at the Stuttgart conference as well as important progress with respect to well-known problems, as, for example, the Kapitza resistance. Two hundred and six scientists from 21 countries attended the conference. Thirteen invited papers and 105 contributed papers, with 34 as posters, were presented. The discussions are included in this volume. A discussion session on large wave vector phonons was organized and chaired by V. Narayanamurti.
