Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The finite simple groups come in several infinite families (alternating groups and the group of Lie type) plus 26 sporadic groups. A leisurely and rigorous study of two of three generations of sporadic groups is the purpose of the book. The level is suitable for graduate students with little background in general finite group theory, established mathematicians and mathematical physicists.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 180 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book is about longitudinal research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Since the early 1980s much has been understood about the problems of novices learning new systems as well as the performance of expert users. However there is still a lot to discover about the transition from novice to expert and its implications for the design of systems. For instance: - How long does it take to become expert - Does early experience of a system have any effect on subsequent flexibility - How can flexibility and long term learning be promoted - Are there strong constraints that should be taken into account in the design of adaptive systems Longitudinal research in HCI has been rare for many reasons. There is always pressure to obtain results - the current climate of short-termism does nothing to promote a longer perspective. The field of HCI itself is changing fast, and there are often virgin technologies to explore which can be more ex citing and potentially profitable than research aimed at basic understanding. There is also a possibly mistaken view that longitudinal studies are always inherently expensive. The present volume grew out of a project at Sydney University. The very first ideas were discussed in 1989. In 1991 data logging started of a mainly undergraduate population using a Unix-based editor, sam(Pike 1987}. Due to good fortune the system continued unchanged into a second year and it became clear data collection had very low marginal costs.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 212 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Leave nothing to chance. This cliche embodies the common belief that ran domness has no place in carefully planned methodologies, every step should be spelled out, each i dotted and each t crossed. In discrete mathematics at least, nothing could be further from the truth. Introducing random choices into algorithms can improve their performance. The application of proba bilistic tools has led to the resolution of combinatorial problems which had resisted attack for decades. The chapters in this volume explore and celebrate this fact. Our intention was to bring together, for the first time, accessible discus sions of the disparate ways in which probabilistic ideas are enriching discrete mathematics. These discussions are aimed at mathematicians with a good combinatorial background but require only a passing acquaintance with the basic definitions in probability (e.g. expected value, conditional probability). A reader who already has a firm grasp on the area will be interested in the original research, novel syntheses, and discussions of ongoing developments scattered throughout the book. Some of the most convincing demonstrations of the power of these tech niques are randomized algorithms for estimating quantities which are hard to compute exactly. One example is the randomized algorithm of Dyer, Frieze and Kannan for estimating the volume of a polyhedron. To illustrate these techniques, we consider a simple related problem. Suppose S is some region of the unit square defined by a system of polynomial inequalities: Pi (x. y) ~ o.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 348 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -High-dimensional knot theory is the study of the embeddings of n-dimensional manifolds in (n+2)-dimensional manifolds, generalizing the traditional study of knots in the case n=1. The main theme is the application of the author's algebraic theory of surgery to provide a unified treatment of the invariants of codimension 2 embeddings, generalizing the Alexander polynomials and Seifert forms of classical knot theory. Many results in the research literature are thus brought into a single framework, and new results are obtained. The treatment is particularly effective in dealing with open books, which are manifolds with codimension 2 submanifolds such that the complement fibres over a circle. The book concludes with an appendix by E. Winkelnkemper on the history of open books.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 692 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Constance Reid, in Chapter VII of her book Hilbert, tells the story of the writing of the Zahlbericht, as his report entitled Die Theorie der algebra is chen Zahlkorper has always been known. At its annual meeting in 1893 the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (the German Mathematical Society) invited Hilbert and Minkowski to prepare a report on the current state of affairs in the theory of numbers, to be completed in two years. The two mathematicians agreed that Minkowski should write about rational number theory and Hilbert about algebraic number theory. Although Hilbert had almost completed his share of the report by the beginning of 1896 Minkowski had made much less progress and it was agreed that he should withdraw from his part of the project. Shortly afterwards Hilbert finished writing his report on algebraic number fields and the manuscript, carefully copied by his wife, was sent to the printers. The proofs were read by Minkowski, aided in part by Hurwitz, slowly and carefully, with close attention to the mathematical exposition as well as to the type-setting; at Minkowski's insistence Hilbert included a note of thanks to his wife. As Constance Reid writes, 'The report on algebraic number fields exceeded in every way the expectation of the members of the Mathemati cal Society. They had asked for a summary of the current state of affairs in the theory. They received a masterpiece, which simply and clearly fitted all the difficult developments of recent times into an elegantly integrated theory.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 392 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Background and Scope of the Book This book continues, extends, and unites various developments in the intersection of probability theory and dynamical systems. I will briefly outline the background of the book, thus placing it in a systematic and historical context and tradition. Roughly speaking, a random dynamical system is a combination of a measure-preserving dynamical system in the sense of ergodic theory, (D,F,lP', (B(t))tE'lf), 'II'= JR+, IR, z+, Z, with a smooth (or topological) dy namical system, typically generated by a differential or difference equation :i: = f(x) or Xn+l = tp(x.,), to a random differential equation :i: = f(B(t)w,x) or random difference equation Xn+l = tp(B(n)w, Xn) Both components have been very well investigated separately. However, a symbiosis of them leads to a new research program which has only partly been carried out. As we will see, it also leads to new problems which do not emerge if one only looks at ergodic theory and smooth or topological dynam ics separately. From a dynamical systems point of view this book just deals with those dynamical systems that have a measure-preserving dynamical system as a factor (or, the other way around, are extensions of such a factor). As there is an invariant measure on the factor, ergodic theory is always involved.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 612 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Viren sind in der Umwelt nahezu allgegenwärtig. 328 pp. Deutsch.
