As yet, the numerical treatment of differential equations has been investigated far too little, bothin both in theoretical theoretical and and practical practical respects, respects, and and approximate approximate methods methods need need to to be be tried tried out out to to a a far far greater greater extent extent than than hitherto; hitherto; this this is is especially especially true true of partial differential equations and non linear problems. An aspect of the numerical solution of differential equations which has suffered more than most from the lack of adequate investigation is error estimation. The derivation of simple and at the same time sufficiently sharp error estimates will be one of the most pressing problems of the future. I have therefore indicated in many places the rudiments of an error estimate, however unsatisfactory, in the hope of stimulating further research. Indeed, in this respect the book can only be regarded as an introduction. Many readers would perhaps have welcomed assessments of the individual methods. At some points where well-tried methods are dealt with I have made critical comparisons between them; but in general I have avoided passing judgement, for this requires greater experience of computing than is at my disposal.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 592 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The suggestion that cancer incidence rates for different parts of the world should be brought together in ~ single volume arose in diSCUssion among mem bers of the Geographical Pathology Committee of the International Union Against Can…cer during a symposium in Mexico in .1964. That there was a need for such a volume rapidly became apparent when the directors of cancer registries were asked for their opinion. Of those approached, all but one responded enthusias tically and immediately agreed to contribute. In the event, data have been col lected from 32 cancer registries in 24 countries, and 39 scientists have con tributed personally by describing the character of their registry and by collec ting and submitting figures in a standard way. The form in whiCh the book appears was suggested by a committee of 15 members, which met at the Ciba Foundation in London in May, 1965, and the editors have been guided in their work by the results of the discussions that took place at that meeting. In a few instances, it has not been possible to follow the Committee's advice, for reasons of finance, and the text which was written by the editors may, in some places, have inadvertently misrepresented the Committee's views. Neuware -In volume 2 of the 'Afrika-Studien' an appraisal of the agricultural development policy in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) from 1950 to 1963 was made. This report is a continuation of the work in East Africa, with the emphasis lying on a ten…tative quantitative assessment of costs and benefits of smallholder development. There are few countries in Africa south of the Sahara where as many and as various measures for the promotion of small holder farming have been tried as consistently and intensively as in Kenya. In particular the 'Swynnerton Plan' led to the employment of substantial sums in African farming. Some of the approaches have been highly success ful, others not. It is the purpose of this report to inform about aims and institutions, methods and difficulties, costs and benefits.
