Within a short period of time, short even by…all present standards, gel chromatography has gone through a development and experienced an accep tance that are unknown to any other method. From experience the new and unique separation technique is today known and liked in all laboratories that are concerned with substances of high molecular weight; in others, the technique is known from hearsay, at least. It has become evident that a comprehensive coverage of the conceptual development, the theoretical principles, and the experimental technique of the new method would be desirable. This coverage is now offered by the book of an expert. Its author has personally participated in the development from its beginning and has helped to promote it. He initiated gel chromatography of many substances, including proteins, on thin-layer plates; for lipophilic substances he has contributed considerably to the transition from water to organic solvent systems and developed theoretical concepts for a better understanding of the effects that are responsible for the separation. This book appears to me to point in new directions. Neuware -The present manual contains a collection of laboratory instructions used during an international training course on membrane biophysics which was held at Homburg in the fall of 1966. The selection of the topics dealt with in the variou…s chapters depended on the scientific interest of the available teachers and on the availability of the necessary equipment in our laboratories. Thus, the material included in this volume does not add up to a systematic course in membrane biophysics. Instead it represents a more fortuitous collection of laboratory problems. In addition, some authors place more emphasis on teaching the more technical aspects of a method whereas others are primarily concerned with the demonstra tion of a significant biological phenomenon. Nevertheless, in spite of such differences of emphasis and a somewhat haphazard choice of a few methods and phenomena among many others of similar importance, it was felt that the publication of the material is desirable. Since no other laboratory manual exists so far, the present laboratory problems which were tested in actual practice may serve as a useful basis for the shaping of further training courses or for laboratory courses for graduate students in biophysics and physiology. Die konstruktive Entwicklung der Werkzeugmaschinen hat zwar de…m Dreher diese Arbeit meist abgenommen, sie brachte aber bis heute weit uber diesen speziellen Fall hinausgehende Anwendungen von Wechselradern. So solI die vorliegende Auflage den jungen Konstrukteur, den Betriebsingenieur und den Arbeitsvorbereiter ansprechen und bietet auch dem Studenten eine Ein fuhrung in die besondere Problematik. Fur das Verstandnis der Wechselraderberechnung erschien es nutzlich, die Wechselradergetriebe in den allgemeineren Rahmen der Vorschubradergetriebe hineinzustellen. Die Verfasser waren dabei bemuht, fur Auswahl und Gestaltung solcher Getriebe neben ihrer eigenen Erfahrung die Grundlagen und Erkenntnisse zu verwerten, wie sie in Buchern von GERMAR [7], ROGNITZ [23, 24], SCHOPKE [29] oder STEPHAN [32] verOffentlicht sind. Der Leser soIl auBer zu eigenen Gedanken auch zum Studium dieser weiterfUhrenden Literatur angeregt werden. Am SchluB des Heftes werden die gewonnen Erkenntnisse auf Beispiele aus der Praxis uber tragen und das Vorgehen bei der Berechnung eingeubt. Es ist selbstverstandlich nicht moglich, auf aIle praktischen FaIle einzugehen. Mit Hilfe der im Kapitel IV. A behandelten Verfahren wird es aber wohl stets gelingen, in hier nicht erwahnten Fallen zum Ziel zu gelangen. Für den Arzt in der Klinik und Praxis aber, wie für den Mikrobiologen sind sie vielfach unbefriedigend, da manche dieser Darstellungen nur kompendiumartig die Historie, die Epidemiologie, die Besonderheiten der Mikro ben, ihre Beziehung zum befallenen Organismus, die Klinik und die zahlreichen Komplikationen des Grundleidens berühren und auch die modernen Forschungs ergebnisse nur teilweise Berücksichtigung finden. In diesem III. Band der 'Infek tionskrankheiten' des Springer-Verlages, der an die IV. Auflage des Handbuchs der Inneren Medizin aus dem Jahre 1952 anschließt, haben wir uns deshalb bemüht, die Besonderheiten der zu besprechenden mikrobiell-bedingten Leiden in einer gewissen Breite und damit monographisch darzulegen. Nur so erscheint es uns möglich, auch für den praktisch tätigen Arzt die Auskunft zu geben, die er am Krankenbett in der Begegnung mit diesen Krankheiten notwendig braucht. Die Anordnung der Beiträge erfolgte wieder gleichmäßig. Definition, Ge schichte, Erreger, pathologische Anatomie, Pathogenese, Epidemiologie, klini sches Bild mit Prognose und Therapie wurden in diesem Band für das ausgedehnte Gebiet der Mykosen, die an Bedeutung stark zugenommen haben, dargestellt. Die von H. SCHNABELMAIER begonnenen und nach dessen UnfaIltod von H. v. ELMENDORFF zu Ende gefiihrten und zur Veroffentlichung zusammengestellten Untersuchungen 'Der Bruch der Speiche an typi scher Stelle und seine Entstehung' sind von besonderem Wert fiir unsere Kenntnisse iiber Entstehung, Behandlung und Begutachtung dieser haufigen Verletzung. 'Die subcutane Drahtumschlingung der Unterschenkelbruche' wurde infolge der belastungs- und funktionsstabilen Osteosynthesemethoden heftiger Kritik ausgesetzt. Es erscheint daher wichtig, die erfahrenen Kenner dieses Behandlungsverfahrens, E. AHRER, E. PHILADELPHY und M. BAUER, ausfiihrlich iiber ihre guten Erfahrungen bei richtiger An wendung der subcutanen Drahtumschlingung an einem groBen Verletzten gut zu Wort kommen zu lassen.
