As explained in volume I, the technique of con ning charged particles in suitable electromagnetic elds was initially conceived by W. Paul as a thr- dimensional version of his rf quadrupole mass lter. Its rst application to rf spectroscopy on atomic ions was completed in H. G. Dehmelt¿s laboratory where notable work was later done on the free electron using the Penning trap. The further exploitation of these devices has followed more or less - dependently along the two initial broad areas: mass spectrometry and high resolution spectroscopy. In volume I a detailed account is given of the theory of operation and experimental techniques of the various forms of Paul and Penning ion traps.

It is an expository work at the level of the beginning graduate student. The first part of Chapter I gives the reader the necessary definitions and… basic concepts. The fundamental method of direct summation is explained and illustrated. The second part of Chapter I deals with the methods developed by Rainville. These methods are based principally on inventive manipulation of power series. Weisner's group-theoretic method is explained in detail in Chapter II and is further illustrated in Chapter III. When this method is applicable, it yields a set of at least three generating functions. In Chapter II for the Laguerre polynomials six generating functions were found. Truesdell's method is studied in Chapter IV. For a given set of functions {fez, an the success of this method depends on the existence of certain transformations. If fez, a) can be transformed into F(z, a) such that a a-; F(z, a)=F(z, a+ 1), or if fez, a) can be transformed into G(z, a) such that a a-; G(z, a)=G(z, a-I), then from each transformed function a generating function can be obtained. Truesdell's method for obtaining the transformed functions does not require any ingenuity on the user's part. Truesdell has shown how these simple results may be exploited to generate more complicated results by means of specified, systematic, and general processes. This lack of experimental basis need not become, however, a multi megohm impedance in the line of progress in the development of a satisfactory scientific theory. While it is true that ultimately a scientific theory must agree with and, in actuality, predict physical phenomena with a reasonable degree of accuracy, such a theory must be sanctioned by its mathematical validity and consistency. Physical phenomena may be expressed precisely and quite comprehensively through the use of differential equations, and the equations formulated by LUNDQUIST and discussed by FRIEDRICHS belong to a class of equations particularly well-understood and extensively studied. This class includes, in fact, many other eminent members, the solutions of which have led to results of far-reaching scientific and technological application. The properties of modular lattices have been carefully investigated by numero…us mathematicians, including 1. von Neumann who introduced the important study of continuous geometry. Continu ous geometry is a generalization of projective geometry; the latter is atomistic and discrete dimensional while the former may include a continuous dimensional part. Meanwhile there are many non-modular lattices. Among these there exist some lattices wherein modularity is symmetric, that is, if a pair (a,b) is modular then so is (b,a). These lattices are said to be M-sym metric, and their study forms an extension of the theory of modular lattices. An important example of an M-symmetric lattice arises from affine geometry. Here the lattice of affine sets is upper continuous, atomistic, and has the covering property. Such a lattice, called a matroid lattice, can be shown to be M-symmetric. We have a deep theory of parallelism in an affine matroid lattice, a special kind of matroid lattice. Regulation is important in twentieth century society, where both machines and social o…rganizations are complex. Cybernetics focused on and became primarily associated with the homeostasis or stability of system behavior and with the negative feedbacks that stabilize systems. It paid less attention to the processes opposite to negative feedback, the positive feedback processes that act to change systems. We attempt to redress the balance here by illustrating the enormous importance of positive feedbacks in natural systems. In an article in the American Scientist in 1963, Maruyama called for increased attention to this topic, noting that processes of change could occur when a 'deviation in anyone component of the system caused deviations in other components that acted back on the first component to reinforce of amplify the initial deviation.' The deviation amplification is the result of positive feedback among system components. Mendel himself could not escape from an application of elementary probability analysis although he might have been unaware of this fac…t. Even Galtonian geneticists in the late 1800's and the early 1900's pursued problems of heredity by means of mathe matics and mathematical statistics. They failed to find the principles of heredity, but succeeded to establish an interdisciplinary area between mathematics and biology, which we call now Biometrics, Biometry, or Applied Statistics. A monumental work in the field of popUlation genetics was published by the late R. A. Fisher, who analyzed 'the correlation among relatives' based on Mendelian gene theory (1918). This theoretical analysis over came 'so-called blending inheritance' theory, and the orientation of Galtonian explanations for correlations among relatives for quantitative traits rapidly changed. We must not forget the experimental works of Johanson (1909) and Nilsson-Ehle (1909) which supported Mendelian gene theory. However, a large scale experiment for a test of segregation and linkage of Mendelian genes affecting quantitative traits was, prob ably for the first time, conducted by K. Plane regions had been found of arbitrarily small area, yet with a totally disconnected boundary. Such regions seemed to defy the very spirit of Riemann…'s mapping theorem. They could be mapped conformally and univalently into a disk, with the single boundary point at infinity being stretched into a circle. The plausible explanation of the mystery is, of course, as follows. Under a mapping of the punctured sphere onto a disk, an area element near the punctured point would have to stretch more in the circular direction than in the radial direction, and the conformality would be destroyed. But if there is a sufficiently heavy accumulation of other boundary components, these can take over the distortion, and the mapping of the region itself remains conformal. Such phenomena made it an important problem to characterize pointlike boundary components which were unstable, i.e., hid in them selves this power of stretching into proper continua. Standard tools such as mass distributions, potentials, and transfinite diameters could not be used here, as they were subject to the vagaries of the other com ponents. The characterization had to be intrinsic, depending only on the region itself, in a conformally invariant manner. The results indicate thatinward-oriented strategies have not achieved the aim ofreducing the import dependence of the developing economies.In order to visualize theimplications of the differingdegree of import dependence, a partial equilibriumeconometric model is used to analyze the reaction of thetrade account on external shocks and domestic policies inColumbia and Ecuador. During this conference, a special session was held on th the oc…casion of the 50 birthday of the well known mathematician and math ematical economist Professor Charalambos Aliprantis, who, by his numerous friends, is usually called Roko. The story behind this nickname is not quite clear yet; it will be investigated further and will be made public prior to his th 60 birthday. (At this moment we have already found out that it has nothing to do with the famous movie Rocco and his Brothers even though Roko does have two brothers. ) Roko was born on the Greek island of Cephalonia on May 12,1946, and his elementary and secondary school education took place there. At 18 he entered the Mathematics Department at the University of Athens. Upon graduation from the University of Athens he proceeded with his graduate studies at Cal tech, where in 1973 he completed his Ph. D. degree in Mathematics under the supervision of Professor W. A. J. Luxemburg. His research career can be divided into two periods. The first one, till 1981, was devoted entirely to pure mathematics. The other one, after 1981, has been subdivided between pure mathematics and mathematical economics. The present volume is a revised version of this book, constructed along the… same lines, but it cannot properly be called the second edition because it is in English. Yet another difference is in the number of contributors, who now include two microbiologists, seven botanists, three zoophysiologists, one biochemist, and three human physiologists. We have again endeavored to treat as many problems as possible but the main theme is still the adaptation of organisms to changing temperatures. What was conceived as a chapter on physical and chemical aspects by Professor L. LUMPER of GieBen will be published later as a supplementary volume. A special effort has been made to cover the copious literature published since 1955 though not, of course, exhaustively. The various chapters were completed at different times and those written earlier have footnotes referring to subsequent literature. The botanical contributions by W. LARCHER, K. NAPP-ZINN and A. PISEK were translated by Mrs. JOY WIESER; Dr. J. M. AUGENFELD was the translator of those on poikilotherms by H. D. JANKOWSKY, H. LAUDIEN and H. PRECHT as well as of those on homeotherms by H.
