It is intended to provide a framework andtechniques to describe and analyze the evolution of dynamicalsystems when the input and output data are k…nown only approximately, according to some probability distribution. The development of this field, in both the theory and applications, has gone in many directions. In this manuscript we introduce measurable expanding random dynamical systems, develop the thermodynamical formalism and establish, in particular, the exponential decay of correlations and analyticity of the expected pressure although the spectral gap property does not hold. This theory is then used to investigate fractal properties of conformal random systems. We prove a Bowen¿s formula and develop the multifractal formalism of the Gibbs states. Depending on the behavior of the Birkhoff sums of the pressure function we arrive at a natural classification of the systems into two classes: quasi-deterministic systems, which share manyproperties of deterministic ones; and essentially random systems, which are rather generic and never bi-Lipschitz equivalent to deterministic systems. We show that in the essentially random case the Hausdorff measure vanishes, which refutes a conjecture by Bogenschutz and Ochs.Lastly, we present applications of our results to various specific conformal random systems and positively answer a question posed by Bruck and Buger concerning the Hausdorff dimension of quadratic random Julia sets.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 124 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -In the years 1994, 1995, two EIDMA mini courses on Computer Algebra were given at the Eindhoven University of Technology by, apart from ourselves, various invited lecturers. (EIDMA is the Research School 'Euler Institute for Discrete M…athematics and its Applications'.) The idea of the courses was to acquaint young mathematicians with algorithms and software for mathemat ical research and to enable them to incorporate algorithms in their research. A collection of lecture notes was used at these courses. When discussing these courses in comparison with other kinds of courses one might give in a week's time, Joachim Neubüser referred to our courses as 'tapas'. This denomination underlined that the courses consisted of appe tizers for various parts of algorithmic algebra; indeed, we covered such spicy topics as the link between Gröbner bases and integer programming, and the detection of algebraic solutions to differential equations. As a collection, the not es turned out to have some appeal of their own, which is the main reason why the idea came up of transforming them into book form. In particular they can be applied to t…he theory of explosions of stars, formation of galaxies, pulsation of alternating stars etc. The equations of general relativity and Newtonian gas dynamics in the cases mentioned above are reduced to systems of a finite (but quite large) number of ordinary differential equations. In the last two decades these multi-dimensional dynamical systems were and still are being analyzed by means of traditional analytic and numerical methods. Important dynamical modes of some solutions were thus established. These include oscillatory modes of the space-time metric near a cosmological singularity, self-similar motion of self-gravitating gas with a shock wave and an expanding cavity inside (as in an explosion of a star), collapse of an ellipsoid of self-gravitating dust into a disc and others. However the multi dimensional dynamical systems in question are so complex, that a complete analysis of all dynamical modes of the solutions by means of well-known tra ditional analytic methods does not seem feasible. It focuses on three important scenarios: the assembly of membrane proteins, the collective response of mechanosensitive channels and the function of the twin arginine translocation (Tat) system. Using methods from equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, general conclusions were drawn that demonstrate the importance of the protein-protein interactions. Namely, in the first part a general aggregation dynamics model is formulated, and used to show that fragmentation crucially affects the efficiency of the self-assembly process of proteins. In the second part, by mapping the membrane-mediated forces into a simplified many-body system, the dynamic and equilibrium behaviour of interacting mechanosensitive channels is derived, showing that protein agglomeration strongly impacts its desired function. To achieve and to guarantee correct systems, the need of formal methods with rigorous semantics and the possibility of verification is widely accepted. Algebraic specification is a software engineering approach of this perspective. When Liskov and Zilles, Guttag and the ADJ-group with Goguen, Thatch er, Wagner and Wright introduced the basic ideas of algebraic specification in the mid seventies in the U. S. A. and Canada, they initiated a very successful and still flourishing new area. In the late seventies, algebraic specification became a major research topic also in many European countries. Originally, the algebraic framework was intended for the mathematical foundation of ab stract data types and the formal development of first-order applicative pro grams. Meanwhile, the range of applications has been extended to the precise specification of complete software systems, the uniform definition of syntax and semantics of programming languages, and to the stepwise development of correct systems from the requirement definitions to the running programs. This startlingly simple and elegant observation heralded a d…ecade of basic research into endothelium-derived vasoactive factors (EDRF). Initially, interest focused on Furchgott's endothelium-derived relaxing factor, which was later identified as the extremely simple molecule, nitric oxide [21. However, bioassay systems suggested the presence of other dilator and constrictor factors. Many of these additional putative factors remain elusive but one constrictor factor was revealed to the world in an impres sively complete piece of science published in 1988. Yanagisawa, Masaki and colleagues [31 demonstrated the synthesis of a twenty one amino acid peptide which accounted for the constrictor activity found in the supernatant of endothelial cells. They identi fied its structure, synthesised the peptide, showed its biological activity in vitro and in vivo, proposed mechanisms of action and cloned and sequenced the gene. They named the factor endothelin. The identification of nitric oxide and endothelin has also rekindled interest in established endothelium-derived mediators, including the prostanoids and other arachidonic acid metabolites, and has led to exploration of the possible roles of oxygen radicals such as superoxide.
