This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The importance of materials science for the progress of electronic techno logy has been apparent to all since the invention of the transistor in 1948, though that epoch-making event was the result of far-sighted research planning by Bell Laboratories dating from a decade or more before: no mere chance discovery, therefore, but the fruition of work which allotted at its inception a vital role to materials. The transistor is now very old hat, but new materials developments are continually triggering fresh develop ments in electronics, from optical communications to high-temperature superconductors. Electronic engineers are now given at least two courses in materials as part of their degree programme. This book arose from a series of forty lectures the author gave to the third year students on the Extended Honours Degree Course in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University, though additional elementary material has been included to make the book suitable for first year students. The biggest problem in such a course is deciding what must be left out, and this I am afraid I shirked by leaving out all those areas which I was not familiar with from my days in the Ministry of Aviation, the semiconductor device industry and as a graduate student and research worker. I hope that what remains is sufficiently catholic. 308 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In marriage, partners bring together preexisting psychological and cul tural histories which may be quite disparate. The idea that 'love con quers all' does not account for the complexities involved in the development of a contemporary partnership. Societal changes over the past few decades have resulted in impor tant shifts in patterns of relationships. Lengthened life spans, decreased incidence and severity of illness and disability, and the availability of contraception have affected our lives and plans substantially. Among the effects are marriages that last longer than they ever have and produce fewer children, despite the high divorce rate. Values and expectations in marriage have also changed over the past several decades, shifting from an emphasis on survival and eco nomic security to a focus on companionship, love, and communication. The desire for self-fulfillment has superseded more traditional concerns about family loyalty Zlnd responsibility. Thus, divorce is often sought as a solution to frustration, disappointment, and conflict. A societal change that has had considerable influence on individ uals and their relationships has been the emergence of the women's movement and changing roles and expectations for women. This change has brought new demands, fulfillments, and conflicts. Current styles of marriage have shifted from an automatic acceptance of clearly designated gender-determined roles toward more egalitarian and interdependent relationships with partners also expressing their own goals, styles, and personalities. The dual career or dual worker family has emerged as the dominant family structure in the United States. 256 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)\* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time. 400 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Developments in the understanding of food protein structure, behaviour and applications continue apace. Many of these have, in the past decade, been reported and evaluated in the series 'Developments in Food Pro teins' , comprising seven volumes, with a total of 55 chapters. The time has now come to re-assess many of the topics reviewed in that series and to add certain others. However, instead of assembling, some what at random, food protein topics from quite disparate fields in indi vidual volumes, we have decided to bring together homogeneous groups of topics, each representing a specific sector of the subject. Under the general theme of 'Progress in Food Proteins' the first of these groups covers 'Biochemistry' . Readers will note that, though six of the topics reviewed in this volume are new, five of them have already featured in 'Developments in Food Proteins'. These last are in active research fields in which new develop ments have been of special significance. In this sense, therefore, they are welcome updates. 432 pp. Englisch.

As chairman of the section on Biomedical Research in Alcoholism of the I.C.A.A., he had plan ned and brought to fruition the international 'Symposium on Alcohol Intoxication and Withdrawal' which had taken place in Lausanne the month before. He was particularly proud of the distinguished group of scientists he had helped to assemble and was eagerly looking for ward to the publication of these proceedings which he hoped would extend our understanding of the phenomenology of alcoholism. Milton Gross was a most unusual man in the extent and range of his activities and accomplishments. He was a certified psy chiatrist and psychoanalyst, a recognized clinical researcher, the author of more than fifty scientific papers, and the editor of three important volumes on alcohol intoxication and withdrawal. He was extremely active in the scientific world of alcoholism as planner and coordinator of three international conferences, as chairman of the section on Biomedical Research of the I.C.A.A., and as a member of a W.H.O. Task Force on Alcoholism. In addition, he was very active in a variety of scientific and service committees in national and local organizations. 668 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The social sciences playa variety of multifaceted roles in the policymaking process. So varied are these roles, indeed, that it is futile to talk in the singular about the use of social science in policymaking, as if there were one constant relationship between two fixed and stable entities. Instead, to address this issue sensibly one must talk in the plural about uses of dif ferent modes of social scientific inquiry for different kinds of policies under various circumstances. In some cases, the influence of social scientific research is direct and tangible, and the connection between the find ings and the policy is easy to see. In other cases, perhaps most, its influence is indirect-one small piece in a larger mosaic of politics, bargaining, and compromise. Occasionally the findings of social scientific studies are explicitly drawn upon by policymakers in the formation, implementation, or evaluation of particular policies. More often, the categories and theoretical models of social science provide a general background orientation within which policymakers concep tualize problems and frame policy options. At times, the in fluence of social scientific work is cognitive and informational in nature; in other instances, policymakers use social science primarily for symbolic and political purposes in order to le gitimate preestablished goals and strategies. Nonetheless, amid this diversity and variety, troubling general questions persistently arise. 412 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The topic of stigma came to the attention of modern-day behav ioral science in 1963 through Erving Goffman's book with the engaging title, Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. Following its publication, scholars in such fields as an thropology, clinical psychology, social psychology, sociology, and history began to study the important role of stigma in human interaction. Beginning in the early 1960s and continuing to the present day, a body of research literature has emerged to extend, elaborate, and qualify Goffman's original ideas. The essays pre sented in this volume are the outgrowth of these developments and represent an attempt to add impetus to theory and research in this area. Much of the stigma research that has been conducted since 1963 has sought to test one or another of Goffman's notions about the effects of stigma on social interactions and the self. Social and clinical psychologists have tried to experimentally create a number of the effects that Goffman asserted stigmas have on ordinary social interactions, and sociologists have looked for eVidence of the same in survey and observational studies of stig matized people in situations of everyday life. By 1980, a consider able body of empirical evidence had been amassed about social stigmas and the devastating effects they can have on social interactions. 288 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Functional analysis owes its OrIgms to the discovery of certain striking analogies between apparently distinct disciplines of mathematics such as analysis, algebra, and geometry. At the turn of the nineteenth century, a number of observations, made sporadically over the preceding years, began to inspire systematic investigations into the common features of these three disciplines, which have developed rather independently of each other for so long. It was found that many concepts of this triad-analysis, algebra, geometry-could be incorporated into a single, but considerably more abstract, new discipline which came to be called functional analysis. In this way, many aspects of analysis and algebra acquired unexpected and pro found geometric meaning, while geometric methods inspired new lines of approach in analysis and algebra. A first significant step toward the unification and generalization of algebra, analysis, and geometry was taken by Hilbert in 1906, who studied the collection, later called 1 , composed of infinite sequences x = Xb X 2, . , 2 X , . , of numbers satisfying the condition that the sum Ik'= 1 X 2 converges. k k The collection 12 became a prototype of the class of collections known today as Hilbert spaces. 324 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This new edition of Stochastic Linear Programming: Models, Theory and Computation has been brought completely up to date, either dealing with or at least referring to new material on models and methods, including DEA with stochastic outputs modeled via constraints on special risk functions (generalizing chance constraints, ICC's and CVaR constraints), material on Sharpe-ratio, and Asset Liability Management models involving CVaR in a multi-stage setup. To facilitate use as a text, exercises are included throughout the book, and web access is provided to a student version of the authors' SLP-IOR software. Additionally, the authors have updated the Guide to Available Software, and they have included newer algorithms and modeling systems for SLP. The book is thus suitable as a text for advanced courses in stochastic optimization, and as a reference to the field. From Reviews of the First Edition:'The book presents a comprehensive study of stochastic linear optimization problems and their applications. . The presentation includes geometric interpretation, linear programming duality, and the simplex method in its primal and dual forms. . The authors have made an effort to collect . the most useful recent ideas and algorithms in this area. . A guide to the existing software is included as well.' (Darinka Dentcheva, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 c)'This is a graduate text in optimisation whose main emphasis is in stochastic programming. The book is clearly written. . This is a good book for providing mathematicians, economists and engineers with an almost complete start up information for working in the field. I heartily welcome its publication. . It is evident that this book will constitute an obligatory reference source for the specialists of the field.' This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book attempts to explain the scientific basis for UHT sterilization and aseptic filling, as well as describe the processes and equipment used. I have tried to avoid producing merely a catalogue of sterilizers and aseptic fillers. Instead I have attempted to explain the principles on which the different types of plant operate, and discuss the factors which influence performance, so that information given by manufac turers may be assessed by readers in relation to their own processing requirements. Statements are generally supported by references. Where no re ference is given, personal experience or my interpretation of the work of others is my justification. Although the book deals mainly with milk and milk products, I hope that the information it contains will be useful to those dealing with other products, since the principles of processing are in general the same. The book is based on more than 30 years' involvement with research into UHT processing and aseptic filling. During this time I have been fortunate to work with and to talk to many people from whom I have learned a great deal. I benefited from conta.cts with Dr T. R. Ashton (England) and Professor H. Hostettler. (Switzerland), who were pioneers in the commercial development of UHT milk. More recently I have been privileged to know and work with research workers in many countries having a common interest in UHT processing. Of these, I should mention particularly Professors E. L. Thomas, V. A. 368 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Soil science is perhaps one of the oldest practical sciences, having been of concern to man probably from the time he progressed from a strictly preda tory life to one in which agriculture became important. In view of the anti quity of concern with the subject, it is perhaps surprising that it can be approached from a fresh viewpoint, as is done in this book. Because soil science is an applied science, it is not surprising that the approach is usually descriptive, rather than imaginative. For agriculturalists and other land users, perhaps the most important part of soil science is the description of soils and the capacities of such soils to maintain crops, and this is reflected by the fact that soil science is usually treated ima highly descriptive manner, with soil classification being one of the main efforts. The treatment of the subject from a geological point of view, with considerable emphasis on the evolution of soils and the reasons governing their composition and form, makes this a highly readable book. Books on soil science are timely, with present-day concern with such major problems as the pollution of our environment and the possibility of overreaching our capacity for producing food for an expanding population. 228 pp. Englisch.

The Production and Use of Interferon for the Treat ment and Prevention of Human Virus Infections. In Vitro, Mono graph No. 3. However, the focus of this particu1ar workshop, as the tit1e indicates, was the production of human interferon and investigation of its c1inica1 use. Evidence has accumu1ated that interferon is an effective antiviral and, possib1y, an anti tumor agent. The production of interferon requires human ce11s and proper inducing agents. While some have a reasonable amount of lecture time, few have clinical opportunities for students to develop practical skills in working with patients who are struggling with sexual problems. It is my impression that the same is true in medical and gynecological residencies, as well as in graduate schools of psychology, counseling and social work. This book was specifically written to help fill that gap. This is a book for clinicians, and it will provide a wealth of practical clinical knowledge and skills in dealing with the gamut of patient's sexual concerns, problems and dilemmas. Twenty-four experts have contributed eighteen chapters which address both the common and unusual sexual issues encountered in practice. These include sexual concerns from childhood to old age; gender identity and sexual preference; sexual dysfunction, including that of the physically ill and disabled; counseling with students, premarital, marital, and divorced patients; fertility and infertility; and chap ters dealing with rape, incest and other sexual contacts between adults and children. Of particular importance are chapters on human sexuality in American minority popula tions, a chapter on alcohol, medication and other drugs, and a chapter on medical management of sexual problems in the gay population, a subject long-ignored by the profession. The focus on practical intervention and skill development is amplified by the concluding four appendixes devoted to patient management problems. 504 pp. Englisch.

Until recently, however, the chemical evidence necessary for validating speculations on neurophysiological function in inverte brates has been lacking. In insects, because of their small size, heroic efforts were needed to collect the millions of tissues or organs necessary for isolation and identification of neurochemicals. With the spec tacular advances in physical and analytical technology within the last decade and with significant advances in radiochemical, radioimmunological and neurophysiological assays, researchers are, for the first time, able to handle microgram and nanogram quantities of complex biological substances. More recent developments in immunology promise to lower these levels further. It is not surprising that these new opportunities accelerated progress in insect neuroscience and that the time was right for a rapid and personal exchange of ideas and information on techniques. These considerations were the primary impetus for convening the International Conference on Insect Neurochemistry and Neurophysiology (ICINN) at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, on August 1-3, 1983. 540 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains the proceedings of the first International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials held in Moran, Wyoming, Aug. 23-28, 1981. The objective of the conference was to review and advance the state of knowledge of the basic physical and chemical properties of hard materials and show how these properties influence performance in a variety of applications. To this end, the 49 con tributed papers and the four keynote papers by Prof. Fischmeister and Drs. Hintermann, Exner and Almond, present an excellent overview of the state of the art in the 'science' of hard materials. The contents of these proceedings also reflect the fact that hard metal technology is now well matured and several aspects of the behavior of these materials are well understood and firmly established. Structure-property relationships in this class of materials are currently well known. Pitfalls in some of the traditional test methods have been recognized and new test methods are being developed which discriminate between intrinsic material properties and flaw content and distribution. Application of fracture mechanics, al though a late corner to the hard materials area (as compared to other structural materials), is rapidly gaining acceptance and new fracture toughness test methods are being developed. Application of modern analysis and analytical techniques to these materials has begun and entirely new and unexpected information has been obtained. For a variety of reasons, 'hard metals' have dominated the research and development scene of 'hard materials'. 1028 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volwne contains the Proceedings of a two-week summer conference titled 'Advances in Integrated Optics' held June 1-9, 1993, in Erice, Sicily. This was the 18th annual course organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the 'Ettore Majorana' Centre for Scientific Culture. The term Integrated Optics signifies guided-wave optical circuits consisting of two or more devices on a single substrate. Since its inception in the late 1960's, Integrated Optics has evolved from a specialized research topic into a broad field of work, ranging from basic research through commercial applications. Today many devices are available on market while a big effort is devolved to research on integrated nonlinear optical devices. This conference was organized to provide a comprehensive survey of the frontiers of this technology, including fundamental concepts, nonlinear optical materials, devices both in the linear and nonlinear regimes, and selected applications. These Proceedings update and augment the material contained in a previous ISQE volume, 'Integrated Optics: Physics and Applications', S. Martellucci and A. N. Chester, Eds. , NATO ASI Series B, Vol. 91 (Plenum, 1983). For some closely related technology, the reader many also wish to consult the ISQE volumes: 'Optical Fiber Sensors', A. N. Chester, S. Martellucci and A. M. Scheggi, Eds. , NATO ASI Series E, Vol. 132 (Nijhoff, 1987) ; and, 'Nonlinear Optics and Optical Computing', S. Martellucci and A. N. Chester, Eds. , E. Majorana Int'! Science Series, Vol. 49 (plenum, 1990). 356 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -An extraordinary development of the knowledge, concepts and biomedical applications has occurred during the past two decades in the biological sciences, including the Reticuloendothelial Sys tem (RES). For example, it is now widely recognized that distinct classes of cells are involved in the recognition of 'exogenous' invaders of the body such as microorganisms and other foreign an tigens, as well as of 'endogenous' parasites represented by trans formed neoplastic cells and altered 'self' antigens. Prominent among cell populations involved in such recognition of antigens and subsequent immune responses are those constituting the RES. In recent years, there has been much discussion and indeed contro versy as to what constitutes such a system and even whether the term 'RES' is appropriate. Some investigators feel that the phago cytes are the most important cells of the RES as they playa major role in the defense mechanism of the host. Mononuclear phagocytes include tissue macrophages ~s well as circulating monocytes and their precursors. Although phagocytosis is a major functional ac tivity, it is only one of their several functions. The important role of phagocytes and other mononuclear cells in antibody forma tion, cell-mediated immunity, specific and non-specific resistance to microorganisms and tumor cells, as well as homeostatic adjust ments in general has become the focus of attention for many inves tigators. 512 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The deposition of calcium-containing salts is a widespread phenomenon in both the plant and animal kingdoms. Its occurrence suggests a generalized biological adaptation to environments rich in calcium. Indeed, the Archaean ocean was rich in calcium carbonate, and traces of ancient organisms have been found in lime stones estimated to be about 2. 7 billion years old. The fundamental nature of biological calcification makes it a subject of interest not only to the student of calcium metabolism and skeletal physiology, but also to biologists in general. As in many areas of biological science recent progress in this field has been rapid, and no attempt was made here to cover all the biological systems in which calcifica tion is an important facet of the organisms' method of operation. Calcification is approached in this volume at the levels of the cellular sites and molecular mechan isms that are involved in this process. The ultrastructural and chemical features of the cells and their products which are associated with calcification are empha sized in several chapters. The editor, in inviting contributions from authors, in tended that collectively the chapters should convey a sense of the ubiquitous and essential nature of the role of calcification in several phyla of the plant and animal kingdoms. The researchers were biochemists, physical chemists, cell biologists and physiologists; some represented medicine and dentistry; all were interested in calcification. 476 pp. Englisch.

Yet there are differences, too. The U. S. A. was born and named in this city. P-450 was first recog nized here -- an odd CO-combining pigment without family or func tion. Japanese workers identified it as an unusual member of the cytochrome family. Finally, in Philadelphia, its biological func tion was established and its growth to a global power initiated. Since discovery of its function as terminal oxidase of the 21-steroid hydroxylase system of adrenocortical microsomes, P-450 has proved to play the same role in a wide variety of other mixed function oxidase systems involved in biosynthesis and catabolism of specific cell or body components as well as in the metabolism of foreign substances entering organisms. P-450-like oxygenating enzymes appear to be fundamental cellular constituents in most forms of aerobic organisms. Activation of molecular oxygen and incorporation of one of its atoms into organic compounds as cata lyzed by P-450 enzymes are reactions of vital importance not only for biosynthesis and degradation of steroid hormones necessary for sustaining life, but also for metabolic activation or inactivation of foreign agents such as drugs, food preservatives and additives, insecticides and carcinogens. Moreover, P-450 linked enzyme sys tems can either be induced or suppressed by these agents with significant biological consequences. 572 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Since there are many different tissues and organs in the body, a study of oxygen transport to tissue necessarily involves a great diversity of bodily functions. Furthermore, these tissue functions can be approached from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Even tually, however, all of these approaches must be combined to arrive at a comprehensive picture. This multidisciplinary effort, though imperative, has been implemented slowly because traditional biologi cal science has been largely organ- or discipline oriented. Initia tives to realize an effective international multidisciplinary collab oration have assumed increasing momentum for the past 20 years. These include meetings held in Bad Oeynhausen in 1965 (book in 1968, edited by D. W. Lubbers, U. C. Luft, G. Thews and E. Witzleb), in Nijmegen in 1968 (book in 1969, edited by F. Kreuzer), in Vancouver in 1970 (J. Strauss), and in Dortmund in 1971; this last was in connection with the 25th International Physiological Congress in Munich (book in 1973, edited by M. Kessler, D. F. Bruley, L. C. Clark, Jr. , D. W. Lubbers, I. A. Silver and J. Strauss). This increasing international cooperation called for a more formal organization of these individual initiatives. The credit for taking this decisive step goes to H. I. Bicher and D. F. Bruley from the U. S. A. and D. W. Lubbers and M. Kessler from Germany, who got together in 1972 to plan a large-scale inter national meeting and to organize an international society. 996 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Studies on the elucidation of structure-function relationships in biochemistry and molecular biology started a few decades ago and represent an area of continuing interest. The celebration of the 75th birthday of Alessandro Rossi Fanelli, who has made signi- cant contributions in this field, prompted the organization of a Symposium on 'Structure-Function Relationships in Biochemical Systems' with the aim of bringing together Rossi Fanelli's students and many of the scientists who have been connected with the Institute of Biological Chemistry in Rome. The Symposium was held in Rome on September 28-30, 1981 at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. This volume contains the lectures presented at the Symposium as well as articles covering the main themes of research conducted in Rossi-Fanelli's Institute. The material is divided into five sections: Hemoglobin, Myoglobin and Other Respiratory Proteins; Mechanism of Action of Metal-Containing Enzym~s; Bioenergetics, Mem brane Structure and Multienzyme Complexes; Cofactor-Dependent En zymes; Sulfur Metabolism. We gratefully acknow~edge the generous financial support of the Italian National Research Council and of the University of Rome, which rendered the Symposium possible. We wish to thank all the con tributors and Maurizio Gattoni, Paolo Gerosa and Mario Sanchioni for their help in the preparation of the illustrative material. Fi nally we wish to express our gratitude to Professor Rossi Fanelli, the unfailing animator of our Institute; in his honour we happily undertook the task of editing this volume. 396 pp. Englisch.

International Symposium on Human Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism,' held in Maastricht (The Netherlands), June 1982. The proceedings of the three previous meet ings in Tel Aviv (Israel, 1973), Baden (Austria, 1976) and Madrid (Spain, 1979) were also published by Plenum Press. In the past few years interest in purine and pyrimidine metabo lism under normal and pathological conditions has been growing rapid ly. Apart from the more or less classical topics such as hyperuricae mia, clinical gout and urolithiasis, an increasing number of papers relating to other fields have been presented at successive meetings. Knowledge derived from the study of purine metabolism in relation to lymphocyte function, for instance, has opened up new possibilities for immunomodulation and leukaemia chemotherapy, with eventual conse quences for other types of cancer. At previous meetings there have been pointers implicating purine metabolism in relation to normal cardiac and skeletal muscle function. During the present meeting much new data on both issues have been re ported which indicate clear differences in the pathways of ATP metabo lism. The widening of the field of interest is also illustrated by the recent work on infectious disease: exploitation of the differences in purine metabolic pathways in certain parasites compared with those in human cells has resulted in new rationales for therapy being devel oped. 576 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Third International Conference on Lymphatic Tissue and Germinal Centers in Immune Reactions was held at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, September 1-4, 1970. The conference is obliged to Professor K. E. Fichtelius for his initiative in establishing the meeting, as well as for the assistance of his staff at the Department of Histology in organizing the meetings. At the University of Uppsala inquiries into the lymphatic system go back to the 17th century and are marked by milestones, such as Olof Rudbeck's discovery of the thoracic duct in 1651 and August Hammar's fundamental work on the thymus in the beginning of this century. So one is justified to s~ that the conference gathered on historical ground. The organizing committee, naturally, hopes that the achievements presented at the conference will contribute to and provide significant advances in the history of lymphatic research. The material presented in this volume displ~s a great diversity of methods and the ingenuity of different investigators in their experimental designs. It is also apparent that contemporary research on lymphatic tissues or cells no longer recognizes the artificial borderline of morphologic ve~8U8 functional. It has become a multi disciplinary affair in which an increasing number of different specialists are working closely together. Apparently this is one reason why so many new and important discoveries have been made recently. 724 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The 1983 Cargese Summer Institute on Particles and Fields was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M. LEVY and J.-L. BASDEVANT), C.E.R.N. (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholique de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (R. GASTMANS). After 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1981, it was the fifth time they joined their efforts for organizing this Summer Insti tute. This school was characterized by simultaneous progress in the theory of elementary particles and by impressive experimental advances. On the theoretical front, one witnessed the new developments in lattice gauge theories, which explore the world of strongly interacting par ticles in a non-perturbative way, and progress in a better understan ding of the unity of all interactions based on supersymmetry. The experimentalists were ~roud to announce the discovery of the interme diate vector bosons; W- and ZO, at C.E.R.N., while physicists working with e+e- colliding beams continued to probe more deeply the validity of the theoretical models of strong, weak and electromagnetic inter actions. We owe many thanks to all those who have made this Summer Insti tute possible! Thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of NATO and its Presi dent for a generous grant and especially to the head of the Advanced Study Institute Program and his collaborators for their constant help and encouragement. We also thank the National Science Foundation (USA) for their financial assistance. 612 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1269 Petrus Peregrinus observed lines of force around a lodestone and noted that they were concentrated at two points which he designated as the north and south poles of the magnet. Subsequent observation has confirmed that all magnetic objects have paired regions of' opposite polarity, that is, all magnets are dipoles. It is easy to conceive of an isolated pole, which J.J. Thomson did in 1904 when he set his famous problem of the motion of an electron in the field of a magnetic charge. In 1931 P.A.M. Dirac solved this problem quantum mechanically and showed that the existence of a single magnet pole anywhere in the universe could explain the mystery of charge quantization. By late 1981, theoretical interest in monopoles had reached the point where a meeting was organized at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste. Many mathematical properties of monopoles were discussed at length but there was only a solitary account describing experiments. This imbalance did not so much reflect the meeting's venue as it indicated the relative theoretical and experimental effort at that point. 348 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Increasing interest in the immunology of mucosal surfaces is obvious from the number of publications in scientific journals and from the frequency of national and international symposia devoted to this subject. Particularly encouraging are the large numbers of young investigators who have chosen to work in this area of theoretical immunology with profound practical implications. The two volumes represented here are the result of an International Congress Of Mucosal Immunology held at the Niagara Falls Convention Center and the Niagara Falls Hilton on June 29 - July 3, 1986. This satellite meeting of the International Congress of Immunology placed emphasis on all aspects of the Mucosal Immune System. This included the regulation of differentiation of mucosal lymphocytes, mucosa-associated lymphoreticular tissue and lymphocyte homing, the immunology of mucosa associated tissues and glands, effector functions in mucosal immunity, and the effects of environmental antigens on the immune response, all of which are included in Volume I. The second volume has emphasized studies of the immune response and effector functions, IgA biosynthesis and transport, IgA proteases and effector functions, developmental aspects and immunodeficiency, the immunopathology of IgA and mucosal immunoprophylaxis. A total of 218 papers are included in these two volumes and a comparison to past meetings held at four to five year intervals indicates the explosive growth of mucosal immunology. 940 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Science undergraduates have come to accept the use of computers as commonplace. The daily use of portable sophisticated electronic calculators (some of them rivaling general-purpose minicomputers in their capa bi li ti es) has hastened this development. Over the past several years, computer assisted experimentation has assumed an important role in the experimental laboratory. Mini- and microcomputer systems have become an important part of the physical scientist's array of analytical instruments. Prompted by our beliefthat this was an inevitable development, we began several years aga to develop the curricular materials presented in this manual. At the outset, several objectives seemed important to uso First, insofar as possible, the experiments included should be thoroughly tested and error free. Second, they should be compatible with a variety of laboratory computer, data-acquisition, and control systems. Third, little or no previous background in either electronics or programming should be necessary. (Of course, such background would be advantageous. ) To satisfy these objectives, we decided to adopt a widespread high-level computer language, BASIC, suitably modified for the purpose. Furthermore, we have purposely avoided specifying any particular system or equipment. Rather, the functional characteristics of both hardware and software required are stipulated. The experiments have been developed using Varian 620 and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers, but we believe they are readily transferable to other commonly available computer systems with a minimum of difficulty. 296 pp. Englisch.
