Simple reasons account for this fact. At a certain stage of development the scientists engaged in investigations of metal complexes did not have access to ESR instrumen tation, while on the other hand, ESR theoreticians rarely had an interest in exploring the chemical applications of metal complexes. More recently chemical physicists have started to make intensive efforts to bridge the gap by applying the ESR technique to a wide range of chemical problems, particularly those involving transition metals and their complexes. In large measure the successes of the theory of the electronic structure of transition metal ions are due to the comprehensive and precise results of ESR studies by chemical physicists. On the other hand, chemists also seem to have realized lately that an immense amount of information can be obtained from ESR data. It is obvious, therefore, that a symposium bringing together the various disciplines was necessary, and there was little doubt that in such a symposium a considerable advantage could be gained from the exchange of information among scientists with different research interests. Consequently, a sym posium on 'ESR of Metal Chelates' was held on March 4, 1968, at the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, at the Cleveland Convention Center.…

The scope of the program itself represents a balance between research applications and control applications, between applied and the more fundamental aspects of spectroscopy. Papers are presented each year in the specialty areas of X -ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, Raman, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy. In many instances over the years, excellent work has been re ported at this symposium and no further publication was made. These reports were then essentially lost for further reference. It is the purpose of this publication to provide a source of reference for the papers presented at the 12th Annual Symposium. This first attempt at publishing a proceedings does not include the entire program. Several papers could not be given company clear ance for publication, and several more were intended for verbal presentation only and were never written for publication. Unprecedented scientific efforts have been made by scientists and clinicians to combat infections of human immunodeficiency virus (HIY), the causative agent. Looking back over the past ten years, we have made remarkable progress toward the treatment of the viral disease: isolation of HIV only two years after the identification of the disease, plus major strides in the areas of the molecular biology and virology of the retrovirus, etc. More remarkably, the discovery of the chemotherapeutic agent AZT (Retrovir) was made within two years after the isolation and identification of the virus, followed by unprecedented drug development efforts to culminate in the FDA approval of AZT in twenty-three months, which was a record-breaking time for approval of any drug for a major disease. The last six to seven years have particularly been an exciting and productive period for nucleoside chemists. Since the activity of AZI' was established in 1985, nucleoside chemists have had golden opportunities to discover additional anti-HIV nucleosipes, which are hoped to be less toxic and more effective than AZT, and the opportunity continues. As we all are aware, AZT possesses extremely potent anti-HIY activity, and no other nucleoside or non nucleoside has surpassed the potency of AZT in vitro.…

Since 1986, several seminars and summer schools devoted to low-dimensional systems have been supported by NATO. The present one, Physics, Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered structures, brought together specialists from different fields in order to review fabrication techniques, charac terization methods, physics and applications. Artificially layered materials are attractive because alternately layering two (or more) elements, by evaporation or sputtering, is a way to obtain new materials with (hopefully) new physical properties that pure materials or alloys do not allow. These new possibilities can be ob tained in electronic transport, optics, magnetism or the reflectivity of x-rays and slow neutrons. By changing the components and the thickness of the layers one can track continuously how the new properties appear and follow the importance of the multilayer structure of the materials. In addition, with their large number of interfaces the study of inter face properties becomes easier in multilayered structures than in mono layers or bilayers. As a rule, the role of the interface quality, and also the coupling between layers, increases as the thickness of the layer decreases. Several applications at the development stage require layer thicknesses of just a few atomic layers.…

Furthermore, due to the relatively low melting point of the first aluminum metallization level, such restrictions extend to the fabrication of multilevel structures that are now essential in increasing packing density of interconnect lines. The fabrication of ultra large scale integrated (ULSI) devices under thermal budget restrictions requires the reassessment of existing and the development of new microelectronic materials and processes. This book addresses three broad but interrelated areas. The first area focuses on the subject of rapid thermal processing (RTP), a technology that allows minimization of processing time while relaxing the constraints on high temperature. Initially developed to limit dopant redistribution, current applications of RTP are shown here to encompass annealing, oxidation, nitridation, silicidation, glass reflow, and contact sintering. In a second but complementary area, advances in equipment design and performance of rapid thermal processing equipment are presented in conjunction with associated issues of temperature measurement and control. Defect mechanisms are assessed together with the resulting properties of rapidly deposited and processed films. The concept of RTP integration for a full CMOS device process is also examined together with its impact on device characteristics.…

It was a happy coincidence that the three of us, child psychiatrists with predominantly clinical interests, selected a collaborative bench research project involving neurotransmitter receptor characterization and regulation. We appreciated the relevance of our work to child psychiatry and wished for a forum to share the excitement we enjoyed in the laboratory with our clinical colleagues. Moreover, it seemed to us that much of the pharmacological research in child psychiatry proceeded on an empirical basis, often without a compelling neurochemical rationale. This could reflect the paucity of neurochemical data that exists in child psychiatry and the very limited understanding of the pathophysiology in most psychiatric disorders that occur in childhood. Also, we bemoaned the fact that there was a virtual absence of meaningful interchange between clinical investigators in child psychiatry and their colleagues in the neurosciences. We believed that an edited book appealing to clinicians and basic scientists could serve as an initial effort to foster interchange between them. The editors wish to emphasize that this book is viewed as only a beginning in the process of interchange that must take place.…

This study examined the effects of burial in soil on the biodeterioration of synthetic textile fibers such as cellulose acetate, nylon, polyesters and acrylics. Cellulose acetate fibers began to show signs of decomposition within two months after burial in common garden topsoil and were completely degraded within four to nine months. It was found that severely decomposed cellulose acetate fibers could be identified by pyrolysis-gas liquid chromatography even when other methods such as polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining failed. The solubility behavior of the cellulose acetate fibers also was altered. The other types of fibers showed no detectable alteration at the end of the twelve-month study. In the Soviet Union, the concepts of Academician N. N. Semenov on chain reactions with degenerate branches have become the starting point of theoretical studies of the stabilization and destruction of polymers. Soviet scientists have developed a theory of critical concentrations of antioxidants and have shown that the processes of stabilization have a very complex chemical character. The nature of the polymers them selves greatly affects these processes and consequently, different stabil izers are required for polymers of different structures.
