For some scientists this will be most of what they need. Howcver, they will be in a position to read and/or use the remaining chapters without undue difficulty.

During the four years since that meeting, much interest in adhesion has been generated among six divisions of the American Chemical Society. Then, in 1974, the Macromolecular Secretariat appointed me to work clo…sely with the six Session chairmen in organizing this Symposium on Science and Technology of Adhesion. Needless to say, the success of the Symposium which took place between April 7 and 10, 1975 in Philadelphia, Pa., is due to their excellent cooperation and the enthusiastic response of con tributors. As originally planned, each division was responsible for one session, and most of the papers, including several late con tributions, are published in these two volumes of proceedings. During the Symposium, we held a banquet in honor of Professor Herman Mark in celebration of his eightieth birthday. His Plenary Lecture and the Symposium Address by Professor Murray Goodman are published in full at the beginning of the first volume. I thank Professors Mark and Goodman for their excellent presentations on this memorable occasion.

Finally, we explain in Section 1. 2 the…aim of this study. 1. 1 THE CONCEPT OF FAILURE. In this monograph we investigate the predictability of corporate failure. By 'failure' we understand the inability of a firm to pay its obligations when these fall due (i. e. technical cash insolvency). (Walter 1957 and Donaldson 1962 and 1969). Failure mostly appears in a critical situation as a consequ ence of a sharp decline in sales. Such a decline can be caused by a recession, the loss of an important customer, shortage of a raw material, deficiencies of management, etc. The ability to predict corporate failure is important for all parties involved in the corporation, in particular for management and investors. An early warning signal of probable failure will enable them to take preventive measures: changes in operating policy or reorganization of financial structure, but also voluntary liquidation will usually shorten the period over which losses are incurred. The possibility to predict failure is important also from a social point of view, because such an event is an indication of misallocation of resources; prediction provides opportunities to take corrective measures. Further, this development of electromagnetic phenomena having spatial and temporal coherence has, based on several centuries of study and practice of noncoherent light, in the last two decades reached the optical region. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium 'Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides' was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. His first widespread use of these natural materials in which their crystalline nature was of importance was undoubtedly in fabricating jewelry and otherwise adorning his weapons, tools, and household items. Both the Old and New Testa ments of the Bible document the use of crystalline gems, and the Romans are credited with first employing diamonds-a metastable crystalline form of carbon-in jewelry. Various civilizations appear to have ascribed magical powers to some natural crystals, and they are known to have been widely accepted in Europe as having medicinal properties during the Middle Ages. Given early man's appreciation of the symmetry and beauty of natural crystals, it is not surprising that his earliest interest in working with these materials appears to have been directed toward techniques for duplicating or manufacturing these sub stances that were so highly valued as gems. Although the exact beginning of the science that we now know as 'crystal growth' cannot be precisely specified, we do know that Robert Boyle had attempted to grow crystals that could be used as gems prior to 1672. Semiconductors which exhibit resonance enhanced optical nonlinearities in the frequency range close to the band edge are the most intensively studied materials for optical bistability and fast gate operation. Modern crystal growth techniques, particularly molecular beam epitaxy, allow the manufacture of semiconductor microstructures such as quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots in which the electrons are only free to move in two, one or zero dimensions, of the optically excited electron-hole pairs in these low respectively. The spatial confinement dimensional structures gives rise to an enhancement of the excitonic nonlinearities. Furthermore, the variations of the microstruture extensions, of the compositions, and of the doping offer great new flexibility in engineering the desired optical properties. Recently, organic chain molecules (such as polydiacetilene) which are different realizations of one dimensional electronic systems, have been shown also to have interesting optical nonlinearities. Four previous ASls of the series dealt with drug carriers of natural and synthetic origin, their interaction with the biological milieu and with ways by which the latter influences such interaction. The present book contains the proceedings of the 5th NATO ASI 'Targeting of Drugs: Optimization Strategies' held in Cape Sounion during 24 June-5 July, 1989. A logical sequel to the last one, the ASI deals with strategies by which milieu inter ference curtailing the function of drug carriers is circumvented or removed. We express our appreciation to Drs. R. Langer and E. Tomlinson for their valuable advice throughout the planning of the ASI and to Dr. G. Deliconstantinos who, as Chairman of the Local Committee contributed so effectively to its success.
