Neuware - The annual meeting of the Perinatal Biochemical Group of the Spanish Biochemical Society held in Madrid on December 15-16, 1989, provided an excellent opportunity to bring together a group of distinguished investigators both from Spain and from abroad with a common interest in developmental endocrinology and biochemistry. The aim of the symposium was to present and discuss the most recent developments in the areas of endocrine and biochemical processes critical to normal growth and maturation of the newborn. To achieve a high degree of interaction among the participants, subject reviews as well as short communications were include in the program. The reviews provided in-depth information on selected important topics. The purpose of short communications was two fold: (i) to provide a forum to discuss on-going investigations on related areas; and (ii) to present opportunities for active participation by young investigators. This format proved very successful in generating fruitful discussions among the participants. Taken together the review chapters and the short communications have resulted in a coherent and unified subject presentation. Advances in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology have provided not only new and exciting experimental approaches but also have opened up new directions in the investigation of differentiation and developmental processes at cellular, molecular and biochemical levels during the early stages of growth and maturation. In recent years a wealth of information in these areas of development has emerged at a rapid rate.…

The article by Whitehead, Watt, Cole, and Morrison pertains to the nuclear-shell model for which a number of articles have appeared in our series. Our very first volume had an article on how SU(3) techniques can, with great elegance, enable one to cope with the sizable number of states within a configuration. But the actual nuclear force is not exactly that yielded by the elegant techniques, and so interest continued in dealing with the large number of states by brute force. Then the Glasgow school of Whitehead et al. discovered that mathematical techniques existed for coping more simply with the lowest eigenvalues of large matrices. The present ar ticle aims generally to make accessible to nuclear physicists the methods developed at Glasgow. The final article by Baer, Crowe, and Truol on radiative pion capture describes a new field of importance because of the advent of the meson factories. More and more pions and muons will become standard tools in nuclear physics.…

Together, these diseases have closed some 7 million square kilometers of land to livestock grazing-land that might otherwise support an additional 120 million head of cattle. In 1970 W.A. Malmquist of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in collabora tion with K.N. Brown, M.P. Cunningham, and other associates at the East African Veterinary Research Organization in Kenya, succeeded in cultivating in vitro the protozoal organisms responsible for East Coast fever. This success, obtained utilizing tissue cultures, encouraged a number of organizations to support research on these parasites in an accelerated effort to develop field vaccines.…

Also included in these volumes are the two plenary lectures presented by Dr. H.A. Margolius (USA) and Dr. S. Nakanishi (Japan). During the last decade our knowledge of the role of the kallikrein kinin system in health and disease has been greatly advanced by the develop ment of antagonists to bradykinin and the introduction to clinical practice of converting enzyme inhibitors. This has been the result of increased recognition by psychologists of the potential role they can play in evaluating patients involved in lawsuits and the increasing sophistication of lawyers who have recognized that damages can go beyond claims of physical and motoric impairment. However, this increase in involvement has not always been matched by a more sophisticated recognition of how the client (whether plaintiff or defendant) can best be served by the neuropsychologist. I have personally seen or reviewed many cases in which the psychologists involved did not effectively present their case. This partially occurred because they failed to recognize the difference in presentations aimed at clinical audiences and those aimed at a legal proceeding. It also occurred because they failed to recognize that the standard of proof necessary is very different in a hospital and in a courtroom. Finally, it occurred because they rarely recognized what the unique role of the psychologist can be in either countering or supporting the testimony of medical specialists. The purpose of this volume is to bring some light on these questions. The presentations here are write-ups of the work presented at the Third Annual Conference on the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery held in Omaha during May, 1985. For these pediatricians, family physicians, and other nonpsychol ogist primary health care providers, it is essential to acquire an under standing and effective working knowledge of important psychological information and concepts to utilize within their own framework and professional responsibilities. In order that this may be accomplished, these professionals with limited backgrounds in psychology must better understand how psychologists themselves assess children and how they derive the conclusions reflected in the statements and reports that are shared with members of their own and other disciplines. In short, nonpsychologists must become substantially more familiar with psy chological assessment, particularly with psychological testing and the subsequent reporting of results.…

In addition, not only new agonists acting on the thyroid have been revealed, but new transducer and second messenger systems have been discovered. The seeds of destruction seem to be sown within all of us, and there is no consensus about how these seeds develop into tumors or about what can be done to halt that development. The sharply conflicting views of investigators in different subdisciplines has been most aptly summarized by Charles Heidelberger of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, who argues that 'the mechanism of cancer is a mirror into which each man looks and sees himself. In late 1974, Betty Ford and Margaretta (Happy) Rockefeller underwent surgery for breast cancer. The extensive publicity surrounding these mastectomies provoked a great deal of interest in the subject of cancer, particularly breast cancer. Newspaper and television stories associated with the operations gave their audiences some insight into the nature of cancer and cancer research, but they provided only a glimpse of the sweeping changes that the directions of cancer research have under gone in the last few years. In large part, these changes simply reflect the natural progression of research, but there is little question that that progression was sharply accelerated by the National Cancer Act of 1971, which initiated what politicians then termed a 'crusade against cancer.…

Hence, nearly three and a half decades after 4-aminoantifolates were first applied clinically in the treatment of human neoplasms, we have begun to appreciate a new dimension in antifolate pharmaco logy which may have profound implications for our understanding of the mechanism of the cytotoxicity and selectivity of this class of agents. With the development of highly sensitive methodology for the rapid detection of folyl and antifolyl polyglutamates, it is now possible to define in depth the intracellular transformation of these agents and their role in determining antifolate action against normal and malignant cells. This information will very likely influence how regimens with methotrexate and related antifolates will be further developed and employed clinically.…

However, just as it has been recognized that primary substance abuse is frequently associated with other diagnosable psychi atric disorders, such as sociopathy or attention deficit disorder (residual type) and that the origins of substance abuse are multivariate, we have also begun to become aware that many other individuals in our society with psychiatric or other problems also suffer, to varying degrees, from substance abuse. These problems may be considered secondary by vari ous specialists or treatment personnel; but nevertheless, they are prob lems, and what disorder is primary or secondary in a given individual may often be very difficult to determine in a meaningful fashion. Thus, within the past decade, research studies have reported significant inci dences of substance abuse/or misuse in high school and college-aged populations, in medical populations, and in individuals with other psy chiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and the anxiety and personality disorders. Yet to date little has been done to bring together and systematize this widely scattered data that describes the presence of substance abuse problems in various populations.…

Psy choanalytic theory was invoked for explaining the psychodynamics underlying a few personality traits without, however, presenting sufficient empirical evidence for the validity of these interpretations. In a reductionistic vein, behaviorally inclined psy chologists have propounded the thesis that all traits are acquired behaviors. Yet, this view neither reduces the number of personality tests nor explains the resistance of traits to modification by means of reward and punishment. Dissatisfied with these and some other less well-known approaches to person ality traits, we decided to explore whether applying our psychosemantic theory of cognition to the trait concept would do better. Since the pioneering work of Reed and Clayton (1968) on the isolation of the reaction center from photosynthetic bacteria, optical spectroscopy with polarized light has been one of the main tools used to investigate the geometrical arrangement of the various chromophores in these systems. The recent elucidation by X-ray crystallography of the structure of several bacterial reaction centers, a breakthrough initiated by Michel and Deisenhofer, has provided us with the atomic coordinates of the pigments and some details about their interactions with neighboring aminoacid residues. This essential step has given a large impetus both to experimentalists and to theoreticians who are now attempting to relate the X-ray structural model to the optical properties of the reaction center and ultimately to its primary biological function.…

The subject of the conference is the use of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering in the of medical images. The intent of the conference is to fonnation, processing and interpretation provide a forum where new ideas and results of research in medical imaging can be presented and amply discussed. Accordingly, the programme can comprise only a limited number of papers. The scientific committee of IPMI-lO selected 41 papers for presentation, although a total of 102 extended abstracts of on the average high quality had been submitted. During of the preparations of the conference the organizers received the tragic news of the death of Francois Erbsmann, the initiator of IPMI, and organizer of the first conference in 1969 in Brussels.
