Paperback. Condizione: Good. Designed to help both professional and student scientists and engineers write clearly and effectively, this text approaches the subject in a fresh way. Using scores of examples from a wide variety of authors and disciplines, the author - himself a writer and physicist -- demonstrates the difference between strong and weak scientific writing, and how to convey ideas to the intended audience. In addition, he gives advice on how to start writing, and how to revise drafts, including many suggestions about approaching a wide variety of tasks - from laboratory reports to grant proposals, from internal communications to press releases - as well as a concise guide to appropriate style and usage. …

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. John Chambers has been the principal designer of the S language since its beginning, and in 1999 received the ACM System Software award for S, the only statistical software to receive this award. He is author or coauthor of the landmark books on S. Now he turns to R, the enormously successful open-source system based on the S language. R's international support and the thousands of packages and other contributions have made it the standard for statistical computing in research and teaching. This book guides the reader through programming with R, beginning with simple interactive use and progressing by gradual stages, starting with simple functions. More advanced programming techniques can be added as needed, allowing users to grow into software contributors, benefiting their careers and the community. R packages provide a powerful mechanism for contributions to be organized and communicated. The techniques covered include such modern programming enhancements as classes and methods, namespaces, and interfaces to spreadsheets or data bases, as well as computations for data visualization, numerical methods, and the use of text data. …

Paperback. Condizione: Fair. This timely and hugely practical work provides a score of examples from contemporary and historical scientific presentations to show clearly what makes an oral presentation effective. It considers presentations made to persuade an audience to adopt some course of action (such as funding a proposal) as well as presentations made to communicate information, and it considers these from four perspectives: speech, structure, visual aids, and delivery. It also discusses computer-based projections and slide shows as well as overhead projections. In particular, it looks at ways of organizing graphics and text in projected images and of using layout and design to present the information efficiently and effectively.…

Hardback. Condizione: Fair. When this series was conceived, a book on substance abuse, including alcohol and alcoholism, was to be of highest priority. This priority was a reflection of my view that the subject is often taught inadequately or insufficiently in many training programs. Yet these problems are com- monly encountered in clinical practice, and all too often in situations where accurate diagnosis and rapid treatment are of critical importance. We wanted a book that would be concise and easily readable but also comprehensive in its presentation of the basic principles underlying clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management. It was of particular importance that the book also serve as an easy reference guide in emergency situations. Marc Schuckit, a man with impeccable credentials as a scholar and an experienced clinician in this field, has produced just such a book Few psychiatrists, psychotherapists, or physicians will want to be without it. The presentation is comprehensive and in depth, yet so clear and well organized that it will also likely be of interest to medical students, nurses, and emergency personnel.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. ? How Prices Matter rices are ubiquitous, so much so that their importance to the smooth operation of a market economy (even one constrained by extensive polit- P ical controls as is the case in China) can go unnoticed and unheralded. Prices are what all trades, whether at the local mall or across the globe, are built around. Tey facilitate trades among buyers and sellers who don?t know each other, meaning they make less costly, or more socially benefcial, the allocation and redistribution of the planet?s scarce resources. Indeed, as the late Friedrich Hayek is renowned for having observed, prices summarize a vast amount of - formation on the relative scarcity and, hence, the relative cost of resources (with much of the information subjective in nature) that can be known only by ind-i viduals scattered across markets and cannot be collected in centralized loc- tions, except through market-determined prices. 1 Because they summarize, and largely hide from view of buyers, so much i- formation spread among people throughout the world, prices can be puzzling. Why prices are what they are, and change for reasons that are obscured by a multitude of economic events that can extend backward in time and forward into the future, can be mysterious. Explaining many puzzling prices can be - tective work that the modern-day Sherlock Holmes would surely fnd challenging. …

Hardback. Condizione: Fair. This book focuses on tools and techniques for building regression models using real-world data and assessing their validity. A key theme throughout the book is that it makes sense to base inferences or conclusions only on valid models. Plots are shown to be an important tool for both building regression models and assessing their validity. We shall see that deciding what to plot and how each plot should be interpreted will be a major challenge. In order to overcome this challenge we shall need to understand the mathematical properties of the fitted regression models and associated diagnostic procedures. As such this will be an area of focus throughout the book. In particular, we shall carefully study the properties of resi- als in order to understand when patterns in residual plots provide direct information about model misspecification and when they do not. The regression output and plots that appear throughout the book have been gen- ated using R. The output from R that appears in this book has been edited in minor ways. On the book web site you will find the R code used in each example in the text.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In March 1997, the Association for Computing Machinery will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the electronic computer. To understand what an extraordinary fifty years the computer has had, you need only look around you--probably no farther than your desk. Computers are everywhere: in our cars, our homes, our supermarkets, at the phone company office, and at your local hospital. But as the contributors to this volume make clear, the scientific, social and economic impact of computers is only beginning to be felt. These sixteen invited essays on the future of computing take on a dazzling variety of topics, with opinions from such experts as Gordon Bell, Sherry Turkle, Edsger W. Dijkstra, Paul Abraham, Donald Norman, Franz Alt, and David Gelernter. This brilliantly eclectic collection, commissioned to celebrate a major milestone in an ongoing technological revolution, will fascinate anybody with an interest in computers and where they're taking us. …

Hardback. Condizione: Good. This second edition continues its mission of improving practical, clinical knowledge among physicians and others caring for elderly people, while providing updated information on several major areas in the field. Reflecting current practice trends, a new chapter on home care has been added as well as one on comprehensive geriatric assessment. Revised guidelines for falls, incontinence, and drug treatment are also featured. Designed to provide both quick reference to clinical problem-solving schemes and lists, as well as a lucid, readable discussion of basic topics in geriatrics, the books value lies in its combination of brief, readily understandable chapters, a section of notes in outline form, straightforward clinical approaches, didactic exercises, and new updated case studies. Family physicians, primary care internists, and other primary specialists caring for elderly people will thus find the book of great value. It also belongs on the shelf of residents, and individual health care professionals, as well as in nursing homes, hospitals, where it will serve as a clinical reference guide.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. The further adventures of a feline philosopher and friend. Could it be? Hans Christian Andersen - who wrote so lovingly of inchworms and ugly ducklings - an unrepentant despiser of cats? That's the rumor that the philosophical feline, Thomas Gray, and her (yes, her) cohort, Cambridge don Lucas Fysst, are determined to snuff out. In Copenhagen to attend a philosophers' convention, they go on the hunt for a missing Andersen manuscript that will set the record straight. A sequel to the popular Thomas Gray, Philosopher Cat, Philip J. Davis' latest is a whimsically written and illustrated tale - part history, part parody, and all fun. Dorian, M (illustratore). …

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. The successful implementation of health information systems in complex health care organizations ultimately hinges upon the receptivity and preparedness of the user. Although the Information Age is well underway, user resistance to information systems is still a valid concern facing the informatics community. This book provides effective management strategies to health care administrators, for the productive integration and maintainance of such information systems. The Second Edition covers three main areas: technical skills, project management skills, and organizational and people skills, including the practical implementation strategies necessary to make the system an operational success. The text will be complemented by 40 illustrations and 20 tables, as well as providing more guides and how to information, which are of great use to the reader. Key topics include: setting the stage; strategic vision, direction, and project planning; critical issues in project planning and management; critical design issues; the implementation process; negotiating political minefields; the critical role of leaders and leadership; dealing with end stage people issues; evaluating project success; managing the altered organization; and organizational and personal preparation for the future. The audience for this book consists of those who require sophisticated health information systems, namely health care administrators, CEOs, clinicians, IT developers, librarians, and professors.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. ItisnowwellknownthatFermat'slasttheoremhasbeenproved. For more than three and a half centuries, mathematicians -- from the greatnamestothecleveramateurs--triedtoproveFermat'sfamous statement. The approach was new and involved very sophisticated theories. Finallythelong-soughtproofwasachieved. Thearithmetic theory of elliptic curves, modular forms, Galois representations, and their deformations, developed by many mathematicians, were the tools required to complete the di?cult proof. Linked with this great mathematical feat are the names of TANI- YAMA, SHIMURA, FREY, SERRE, RIBET, WILES, TAYLOR. Their contributions, as well as hints of the proof, are discussed in the Epilogue. This book has not been written with the purpose of presentingtheproofofFermat'stheorem. Onthecontrary, itiswr- ten for amateurs, teachers, and mathematicians curious about the unfolding of the subject. I employ exclusively elementary methods (except in the Epilogue). They have only led to partial solutions but their interest goes beyond Fermat's problem. One cannot stop admiring the results obtained with these limited techniques. Nevertheless, I warn that as far as I can see -- which in fact is not much -- the methods presented here will not lead to a proof of Fermat's last theorem for all exponents. vi Preface The presentation is self-contained and details are not spared, so the reading should be smooth. Most of the considerations involve ordinary rational numbers and only occasionally some algebraic (non-rational) numbers. For this reason I excluded Kummer's important contributions, which are treated in detail in my book, Classical Theory of Algebraic N- bers and described in my 13 Lectures on Fermat's Last Theorem (new printing, containing an Epilogue about recent results). …
