Neuware -This volume contains selected contributions from the XIth Meeting of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery held in September 1994 in Antalyaffurkey. Most of the papers deal with the many therapeutic and technical advancements made in this field of neurosurgery. The emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. An increasing number of young neurosurgeons takes an interest in the neurosurgical approaches to the treatment of movement disorders, chronic pain and epilepsy. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neglected fact that these neurosurgical treatments can be offered to large patient populations. Neurotransplantation as a novel treatment of Parkinson's disease has paved the way for the application of this technology for other indications. The pioneering work performed by the late Edward Hitchcock is reviewed here. There is a renewed interest in pallidotomy for dealing with certain forms of Parkinson's disease and certain aspects of this operation are discussed in another paper. Progress in the neurosurgical treatment of pain is dealt with by contributions on refined techniques of percutaneous cordotomy, DREZ operations and critical evaluations of spinal cord stimulation. A novel approach is a report on the experiences of treating cancer pain by intraspinal implantation of chromaffin cells. Several contributions cover the important issues of novel techniques for the study of neural dysfunction, peroperative monitoring with PET, microrecording, magneto-encephalography and other techniques.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The human personality is inextricably bound up with, among other things, the function of the central nervous system. Diseases and malfunctions of the brain, head injuries and neurosurgical operations can all result in permanently altered behaviour patterns. This interrelation between brain and behaviour is most clearly demonstrated in cases involving functional neurosurgery and severe traumatic lesions. Despite the fact that this interrelation represents an everyday challenge to the neurosurgeon, it is a question which receives less attention than it deserves in neurosurgical meetings. Given the scope and complexity of this topic, it is not possible to cover every aspect of it here: hence, discussion is limited to the impact on personality of injuries, language, epilepsy and psychosurgery. However, before considering the medical aspects, it was deemed necessary to try and arrive at a definition of 'personality'. This question was discussed by a number of philosophers representing various perspectives. Their diversity of viewpoints and conceptions greatly enriched the discussions. 196 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the past three decades, Vascular Surgery has emerged as a specialty within general surgery. Fellowships are now available to equip surgeons with specialized skills for managing various vascular problems. Nev ertheless, the vascular surgical emergency, one of the greatest challenges in surgical management, may occur suddenly and at a time and place remote from the highly qualified vascular surgeon or a specialized center where complex vascular treatment is routine. The initial evaluation and treatment must be undertaken by a general surgeon who determines the extent, sever ity, and urgency of the problem at hand, and hopefully will arrange appro priate transfer to a specialized center if the patient's condition permits. Urgent problems, on the other hand, demand immediate surgical interven tion by the general surgeon if any hope for salvage is to occur. It is in this set ting that this volume offered by Professor Staudacher may be of assistance to the general surgeon whose experience in this type of emergency may be limited. This concise, well illustrated volume should serve as a guide to manage the peripheral vascular emergency involving either the arte rial or venous system. 184 pp. Englisch.

Once again the generous support of our sponsors, the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, the Styrian Government and others, had made it possible to organize this school. The aim of the topics chosen for the meeting was to present different aspects of stochastic methods and techniques. These methods have opened up new ways to attack problems in a broad field ranging from quantum mechanics to quantum field theory. Thanks to the efforts of the lecturers it was possible to take this development into account and show relations to areas where stochastic methods have been used for a long time. Due to limited space only short manuscript versions of the many seminars presented could be included. The lecture notes were reexamined by the authors after the school and are now published in their final form. The general aim of these Advanced Seminars is to bring together European Neurosurgeons interested or involved in research, either clinically, experimentally or both, in a given field in order to achieve in-depth informal discussions not possible in the more conventional large congress. In particular, these Advanced Seminars seek to provide high level teaching by experienced basic scientists, to provide 'state of the art' assessment of the subject and to highlight areas of controversy that might be suitable for future research. A special effort is made to identify younger Neurosurgeons, partly through the auspices of the European Directory of Neurosurgical Research, who have a particular interest in the subject under discussion, not all of whom will have immediate access to the most advanced, modern technology. Surgical treatment of epilepsy is an expanding area of endeavour and an expertise that remains underutilized in many countries. The programme for this Seminar was designed to paint the broad background, moving from basic membrane electrophysiology through to cost benefit analysis and rehabilitation. The perspectives of neu ropathology, neurology, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, neuropsychology, neurophysiology and the drug in dustry are all included. 160 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The equations of quantum mechanics, let alone those of quantum field theory, are sufficiently complex to solve that various approximation schemes are both welcome and desirable. In applications to quantum field theory, renorm alized perturbation theory has long been the predominant calculational tool, and it has even tended to shape the entire conceptual outlook on such problems as well. How ever, the apparently irreconcilable conflict between strong interaction physics and perturbation theoretic calculations has given way in the past few years to some fairly revolut ionary (at least for field theory) modes of formulation and calculation. The fires of this revolution have been fed by exact solutions of special classical systems, [1] notably the sine-Gordon equation, and an appreciation of the relevance of classical solutions of nonlinear systems as starting points in quantum analyses [2]. The soliton solutions of the classical sine-Gordon equation exhibit extraordinary stability under scattering, but this feature is not essential for their utility in quantum studies. Consequently, broad studies have been made of nonlinear systems that exhibit localized, persistent solutions, which have also frequently been termed 'solitons' (or solitary waves, or kinks) as well [31. Solitons that have their origin in con ventional symmetries and conserved currents (and thus are ~topological in origin) have been discussed [4] along with those that arise from asymptotic properties of the solution, as in the sine-Gordon model, (and thus are topo logical in origin). 904 pp. Englisch.

Introduction Of the ever increasing number of viruses known to affect man and higher animals, the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) was one of the first to be discovered. Indeed, this virus has been known and maintained in the laboratory by passages in a relatively simple host, the mouse, for 35 years. Yet our knowl edge of its properties is still scanty when compared with the wealth of informa tion available for other viruses, some of which have come to our attention much more recently. There are at least four reasons which may help to explain this seeming paradox. (1) The early belief that the LCM virus was the frequent cause of human diseases had soon to be abandoned; infections of man with this virus are rare. (2) By way of contrast, laboratory infections are not uncommon and they frequently run severe and even fatal courses. (3) Until recently, the only means of titrating the virus was by mouse inoculation, a method in which accuracy and economy are poorly correlated. (4) The virus is of unusual lability, being quickly inactivated under conditions which leave other viruses intact. Thus, when balancing medical and theoretical importance against personal hazard and tech nical difficulties, the result was quite unfavorable, and lack of interest was really not surprising. In the last few years, however, the situation has gradually changed and an increasing number of workers have turned their attention to this virus. 184 pp. Englisch.

For successful therapy it is of the greatest importance to understand how the different inhibitory mechanisms involved in the normally functioning brain are carried out, and how the devastating avalanche of the seizure activity may overrun wide areas of grey matter. This problem of how an attack may arise has been dealt with in several monographs, but from different points of view: on the one hand chiefly from the viewpoint of the clinical EEG (GAsTAuT et al. 1969), on the other hand from the viewpoint of experimental epilepsy, starting with the activities observed at the level of the nerve cell (JASPER et al. 1969). This volume has quite a different perspective. It contains the papers and discussions presented at a Symposium organized by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the aim of which was to arrive at a better understanding of some of the electrical phenomena accompanying the epileptic seizure. 444 pp. Englisch.

There is also evidence of a returning interest in functional neurosurgery other than pain which has always sustained high levels of endeavour. The present work comprises selected papers from a much larger group of interesting and important communications to the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. They represent modern views on a wide variety of stereotactic surgical topics from internationally acclaimed experts in this field. The neurosurgeon who has little or no acquaintance with this fruitful sub-specialty will be surprised to find very broad applications of the technique which is gradually replacing many con ventional neurosurgical procedures. This is particularly evident in the papers on tumours but there is also a section on the treatment of vascular disease which marks an extension of neurosurgical practice. The Society has always regarded technical advances as important and some of the most recent devel opments appear in this book. Finally, an exciting new development of neural transplantation marks the beginning of what may be an important part of neurological surgery in the future. 128 pp. Englisch.

Subsequent to their pioneering efforts, another surge of interest could be said to have centered about the efforts of the Chevalier Jacksons in the 1920's. After those bold steps, and for almost 40 years, research in laryngology and interest in laryngology continued, but at considerably and increasingly less intense levels, certainly so far as the otolaryngologist population was concerned. In the 1940's Julius Lempert sparked a renaissance in otologic research, deVelopment, and surgery, and exciting new frontiers opened in otology. In our own time, otology remains a large basic and fundamental segment of the otolaryngologic purview, but the flood of new discoveries which followed Lempert, like those which had followed the Jacksons in the 1920's in laryngology, appears to have diminished. When the authors of this publication made acquaintance in the late 1960's, there were approximately 10 centers in the United States for laryngologic research which could be truly designated as voice research facilities. The senior author was at that time instrumental in formulating the major criteria for laboratories to be so designated. In the early 1980's interest in laryngology has revived. At a recent meeting it was possible to list over 40 such laboratories which now were known to the authors over a broad geographic sweep, covering the entire United States. 128 pp. Englisch.

However, this involves a number of technical problems, not only in the generation of the heat, but above all in physically determining the distribution of this heat in the target area. Radiological brachytherapy has enjoyed a massive revival thanks to the afterload ing methods, which have made possible the safe application of radiation without affecting operating personnel. It was therefore a logical step to combine brachy therapy with hyperthermia. This led to a new and promising method of treatment in oncology, and it is highly praiseworthy that Dr. HANDL-ZELLER has undertaken the task of bringing together the leading scientists and c1inicians on this specialised sector at the present time to publish their experimental and c1inical findings and results in book form. It is not possible to list and describe all the valuable contributions at this juncture. 204 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Various textbooks on stereotactic neurosurgery have been published during the last few years (Riechert 1980, Schaltenbrand and Walker 1982, Spiegel 1982), all of them dealing with functional stereo tactics as the major subject in the field. Diagnostic and therapeutic stereotactic interventions are only briefly described, whereas localization techniques are not yet mentioned. Since 1980, however, an increasing number of reports has been published on CT guided and computer monitored stereotactic performances which enable the surgeon to combine diagnostic and therapeutic efforts in one session. With recent progress in scanning techniques, including high resolution CT, NMR, and PET imaging of the brain, it has become possible to study and localize any brain area of interest. With the concomitant advances in computer technology, 3-dimensional reconstruction of deep seated lesions in stereotactic space is possible and the way is open for combined surgery with stereotactic precision and computer guided open resection. This type of open surgery in stereotactic space is already being developed in some centers with the aid of microsurgical, fiberoptic, and laser beam instrumentation. With these advances stereotactic techniques will rapidly become in tegrated into clinical neurosurgery. Stereotactics has become a metho dology which enables the surgeon to attack deep seated and subcortical small tumors. Neurosurgeons may abandon therapeutic nihilism, still frequently seen in glioma treatment, in the near future when stereotactic resection will be feasible and remaining tumor cells may be killed by adjuvant treatment modalities still in development. 296 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume, Biology of Poxviruses, marks our debut as editors of this well known series. We plan to continue the tradition of providing a forum for exten sive, critical reviews of individual virus groups, as exemplified by the present volume. But the pace of discovery is accelerating so rapidly that we feel the need to offer an additional format: volumes that contain collections of shorter, topical reviews on a group of related subjects. Such collections might cut across con ventional boundaries between virus groups, dealing, as an example, with a partic ular aspect of virus-cell interaction. Admittedly, this new format stretches the term 'monograph' beyond the accepted definition, but we believe that we should pay that price to maintain the usefulness of the series as a medium of scientific communication. Whenever possible, we will enlist the aid of deputy editors to bring such col lections to fruition. As in the past, the editors and the publisher will welcome suggestions for topics and contributions. 124 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -At a round table discussion on the eukaryotic chromosome sponsor ed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Diisseldorf, February 1978, the botanists among the participants felt that plant systems were under-represented. In this unsatisfactory situation, Professor V. HEMLEBEN, Tiibingen, suggested another meeting to discuss actual problems and results concerning botanical chromosome research. Professor W. NAGL was willing to organize a symposium at the University of Kaiserslautern, and Professor F. EHRENDoRFER, Wien, contacted the Rpringer-Verlag, Vienna-New York, to explore the possibility of publishing the results of this symposium in the form of a supplement volume to the journal Plant Systematics and Evol7ttion. The conference took place on 13-15 October 1978 in the Department of Biology of the University of Kaiserslautern and was attended by 40 participants from 11 universities between Hamburg and Vienna. Emphasis of this Chromosome Symposium was given to three aspects, which do not attract major interest at large international congresses: 1. Discussion and Demonstration of technical details which cannot be found in published papers (so-called tricks). 2. Orientation about actual trends and results in our understanding of the organization, evolution, and function of the plant genome at the level of the DNA (gene), the level of chromatin, and the level of the karyotype. 3. Presentation of hypotheses and models which may be stimulating for further research. Moreover, younger students should have the possibility to present their results and to discuss them with more experienced scientists. 296 pp. Englisch.

These studies have been supplemented with studies of cerebral autoregulation, CO2 reactivity and barbiturate reactivity. Other investigations include studies of cerebrospinal fluid pH, bicarbonate, lactate and pyruvate. In this book experimental and clinical studies of the dynamic changes in CBF, CMRO2, CO2 reactivity and barbiturate reactivity are reviewed. The author's own clinical studies of the dynamic changes in CBF and cerebral metabolism are summarized and discussed, and the therapeutical implication as regards the use of artificial hyperventilation, sedation with barbiturate and mannitol treatment are discussed. 76 pp. Englisch.

Higher precision and newer instrumentation in surgery as well as better examination methods and progress in microbiology have given us access to much more information about the pathological physiology and anatomy that we are confronted with in our various fields of expertise. As we have approached a new millennium we decided to capture some of these new ideas and incorporate them into a conference where we could share our work and benefit from each others' experiences. This book is based on contributions nd presented at the '2 International Conference on Vitreoretinal Diseases' which was held in September 2002 in Vienna, Austria which focused on the retinal macula. The meeting was very fortunate to have the world's most renowned leaders in macular research attend and share their vast experience and expertise as well as their latest research and results. This meeting followed the 'First International Conference on Vitreoretinal Diseases' which was held in Vienna, Austria in 1998, and focused on retinal transplantation and retinal microsurgery. nd After the great success of the '2 International Conference on Vitreoretinal Diseases' an overwhelming interest was expressed to gather all these new and innovative ideas that had been developed in a book in order to give colleagues and students access to a valu able collection of the information presented at the meeting. This international meeting was administrated by, Mrs. Tilly and Mr. 332 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nuclear power offers an abundant energy supply for the long term and at reasonable costs. Both are badly needed in this world of limited energy reserves and rising energy prices. On the other hand, there are questions widely discussed in the public on nuclear safety, on acceptable means of nuclear waste disposal, and concern on the proliferation of nuclear weapon capabilities. Public confu sion is widespread since facts are often overshadowed by emotions. Recognizing the need for reliable, factual and comprehensive information on nuclear energy, this book on Nuclear Fission Reactors is published .to present the scientific and technical facts of nuclear fission reactors, and to analyse their potential role and risks. The author, Professor Dr. G. Kessler, has worked in nuclear research and project management since 1963. From 1975 to 1978, he acted as project leader for the German/Belgian/Dutch Fast Breeder research and. development activi ties. Since then, he has been Director of the Institute of Neutron Physics and Reactor Technology in the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre. The book is part of the series 'Topics in Energy' issued by Springer Publish ers. The intention of this series of in-depth analyses is to present the facts, inherent problems, trends and prospects of energy demand, resources and tech nologies. The vital importance of energy for human activities has become apparent to the public particularly through dramatic events in the area of oil supply. 284 pp. Englisch.
