Mosquito collection and insecticide resistance testing was extended to Pemba island. Mosquito collections were done u…sing indoor and outdoor methods from four randomly selected sites. World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines were used to conduct resistance testing on the mosquitoes and cone bioassays for bed nets evaluation. The study revealed that malaria vectors collected on Pemba and Unguja islands belonged to the Anopheles gambiae complex. Molecular identification showed that Anopheles arabiensis was the most prevalent sibling species followed by An. merus. Pyrethroid resistance was confirmed from Pemba for the first time in the region. However, this was not the case on Unguja where malaria vectors were found to be almost fully susceptible against the pyrethroids. A systematic monitoring campaign for insecticide resistance to be implemented so that the impact of control efforts can be predicted. Following an evaluation of long lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) in the field, 66% were found in poor condition after 3 years. Moreover, bioassays on these nets showe 52 pp. Englisch.

No specific re…sponse in the activities of the selected enzymes and no extremely DNA damaged was recorded in the pre-hatching stage exposed to the lead nitrate doses. In contrast, remarkable alterations in the activities of the same enzymes and significant dose-related DNA damage response over time in the post-hatching stages were recorded. Low susceptibility in pre-hatching stages is most probably a consequence of the chorion, which seems to protect the embryos from a range of external pollutants. In addition, histopathological malformations confirmed a decreased sensitivity in pre-hatching stages: The degree of malformations in the eyes, gills and notochord increased drastically after hatching. In our point of view, the protective capacity provided by a hardened chorion is a very interesting finding, well worth further studies. Also, this study was conducted on oxidative stress by factors affecting anthocyanin color changes (pH, PPO and hydrogen peroxide).The UV-Vis spectra of extract anthocyanins were recorded to find the suitable pH for preserving the color. Due to scarcity of information on the ecology of larv…al population of mosquito vectors in this area, the present study was conducted in an attempt to provide updated knowledge on this aspect in the study area. The study was conducted in 3 ecologically different strata known as malaria endemic in Tihama lowland. The larval ecology was studied over a 24-month period and a total of 7712 mosquito larvae were collected between October 2005 and September 2007. The larval fauna composed of 7, 11 and 4 species of the genera Anopheles, Culex and Aedes, respectively. The study encountered Cx. duttoni, Cx. decens and Cx. bitaeniorhynchus, as first record in Saudi Arabia. Six types of habitats were surveyed, the most significant of which was wadi (valley)habitat. Anopheles arabiensis showed significant tendency towards breeding in wadi habitat, whereas An. sergentii breed readily in at least 3 different habitats. Depth and temperature of water are significant characters in the occurrence and density of An. arabiensis. 140 pp. Englisch.

The untreated and cryogenically treated brass wire electrodes have been tested for various properties, like micro-hardness, tensile strength, conductivity.It has been observed from experimental results that the wire grains are more refined in deep and shallow cryogenically treated wire electrodes. The electrical conductivity of deep and shallow cryogenically treated electrode has significantly improved. In this sense, a mass microsensor capable of sensing biomolecules is desirable. This book was focused on the design, simulation, fabrication and characterization of MEMS-based mass microsensors for the detection of biomolecules. Regarding the biocompatibility, UNCD and Parylene were used as structural materials; as piezoelectric materials, quartz, PVDF and AlN were used. The parameters of the resonators were extracted by using 3D FEM models and experimental results. UNCD films used as substrate, yielded a highly oriented (002) AlN films even as thin as 80 nm; it exhibited a piezoelectric coefficient of about 5.3 pm/V, one of the highest demonstrated today. AlN/diamond structure is a very promising device for FBAR applications so it opens a huge field of biomedical applications. 268 pp. Englisch.

This book reported the results of a research which was aimed at studying the beha…viour of these defects in the liquid metal once they have formed. The results suggested that both oxygen and nitrogen inside the bifilm would be consumed by reaction with the surrounding melt, and that hydrogen might be diffused into the defect. The time required for the consumption of the atmosphere inside a defect entrained in pure Al, Al-7Si-0.3Mg and Al-5Mg alloy melt, was determined to be 9, 25 and 6 minutes respectively. In addition, the results suggested the occurrence of two competing mechanisms during holding of the castings in the liquid state before solidification. The consumption of air inside the defects due to reaction with the surrounding molten metal may lead to improvements in mechanical properties, but this may be accompanied by hydrogen passing into the defects, which has a deleterious effect on properties. This research could lead to the development of new techniques by which these defects might be deactivated in aluminium castings. 332 pp. Englisch.
