Whyte, The Abbey Book Shop 1935. One of a limited edition of 100 numbered copies, this being copy number 7, signed by the translator. Some toning to boards an rubbing to top and bottom fore-edges, otherwise a Very Good/ Near Fine copy for age. Notes: No mention of this title being issued in a jacket in Duval. In his preface MacDiarmid acknowledges the assistance he received from the great Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean in translating 'The Birlinn': 'I have, with the collaboration of my friend Mr Sam MacLean, of Raasay, made a number of translations of the most important Scottish Gaelic poems, of which this is one'. In later life Sorley MacLean said that MacDiarmid expressed a great interest in Gaelic poetry . . . especially in the work of Alexander MacDonald: 'He had sensed something in [him], this tremendous energy, this verve in Alexander MacDonald, and I recognized that he was right in that. When I met him in 1934 I agreed to help him . . . in translating MacDonald's "Birlinn" and Macintyre's "Ben Dorain" and a few other Gaelic poems, but especially the Birlinn . (Nicholson, An Interview). At the time of their collaboration MacLean had written to MacDiarmid, In a letter dated July 27th, 1934: 'I have been working at [those Gaelic translations which you asked me to do for you] more or less since I came home at the end of June and as I am thinking that my speed is not what it should be. . . I would like to know first when you wish them. I am enjoying the work very much and I find it extremely profitable to myself . . . You may be assured that I will be greatly delighted to do anything I can towards helping your work'. Signed by Author(s).…
