Large paper copy, oblong folio, in quarter calf over contemporary red marbled boards, gilt title to red calf label to upper board, corners & edges rubbed, old spine repairs to spine head & tail. Internally, 3 parts in 1 (North & South mixed), with title page (South Wales) and 37 hand coloured aquatint plates by and after Sandby (including one additional view not listed in Abbey - Landaff), the first set with no publisher or date details, lacks the 2nd title page (North Wales) occasional spot, book label to fpd (Peter Bicknell) with a loose letter from the bookseller to Bicknell about the book sale, plus ink name (W Danby), hinges strengthened at some stage in the past, tissue guards present. The First set of COLOURED Aquatint Views produced in England Large Paper example in early diced russia, rubbed at edges, covers with gilt Greek pattern borders, titled on upper cover in gilt, gilt panelled spine, board edges & turn in gilt, red marbled endpapers, oblong folio, text block edges yellowed. 3 parts in one, 2 sepia aquatint titles (as issued) & 37 hand coloured aquatint plates by & after Sandby (including one additional view not listed in Abbey), with guards, some within grey wash borders, some numbered in ink, Part III bound before I & II, a little spotting (mainly in the margins), one or two light stains & scratches. The first set of aquatint views produced in England, & particularly scarce with contemporary hand colouring, (Abbey in fact doubted that any early impressions were issued coloured). The additional plate in this copy is L[l]andaff (numbered XI in ink), whilst Denefawr Castle (listed in its place by Abbey & more commonly found) is loosely inserted from another copy. Both bear the date 1777. 1 letter tipped on to fep from book dealer Stephenson of James Rimell & Son to Sir Mayson Beeton ref selling him this copy for £42 (1933!) plus another leaf explaining Aquatints & mentioning that this was gifted by Beeton to Dorothy Grenside. No binding. Condizione: Very Good. 340 x 485 mm., sepia aquatint with very large margins. Sandby's importance lies in his adoption of aquatint. His 'XII Views in South Wales' are the first printed in England. In 1753 he took up lodging with his brother in Windsor Park and began a career as a drawing master, painter and engraver to the nobility. He quickly gained the attention of Sir Joseph Banks who became one of his most important patrons, and that of the Royal family. Much of his early work is of Windsor and surrounding countryside. This is from one of his early series on Windsor and Eton. The series of five views are considered by Nicholas Potter to be "amongst his finest works both as images and in the quality of the engraving." A further source stated "This essentially social quality of Sandby's work, which directs our attention less to the physical environment than to people who occupy it, is a precedent that would be passed on to Sandby's student Michael 'Angelo' Rooker and, through Rooker, to J.M.W.
