This production of "The Japanese Box" was conceived of by printer Gerhard Steidl and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld to celebrate the avant-garde of Japanese photography in the late 1960s and early 1970s. All of the work is in black and white. A vanguard of that movement was the publication of "Provoke" magazine by Takuma Nakahira in 1968 and represented by facsimiles of the first three issues.
