A book in Very Good condition. The wood letter specimens used in this book were mainly cut by Day & Collins, with 'U' and 'V' by Delittle of York and eight letters by unknown makers. William Makepiece Thackeray (1811-63), an English novelist and illustrator, wrote the verses for each letter of the alphabet in around 1833 in the form of a notepaper book for the education of Eddy Chadwick, the son of a friend; that book was first published in 1929 by John Murray with Thackeray's own drawings.

'As the papers were all of varying size they had to be folded and cut by hand before I began. I printed each sheet doubled with a sheet of 'Yellow Pages' inside to absorb any ink that might go through to the paper. I lost a number of letters from when they hit bits of rock, bark or charcoal, but apart from tthat had no trouble printing. The type area for each page for delibarately varied to avoid the need for accurate registration, which would have been impossible with such irregular edges to the paper.' (B19).
