Blue-green plain boards, paper spine-label, small 8vo, viii, 48 pp. An interesting item in its own right but this copy made particularly appealing by its four-fold provenance from leading figures in the pursuit of Thomas James Wise. Joseph Charles Thomson (1867-1964), a small-scale publisher and bibliographer wrote a handful of works including four bibliographies (aimed very much at the collecting market, with details of prices and rarity): of Dickens (1904), Swinburne (1905), Tennyson (1905) and Charles and Mary Lamb (1908). John Carter - prompted by Simon Nowell-Smith's gift of copies to him, including our Swinburne volume - examined these for a piece in the Book Collector (Winter 1962, supplemented Summer 1963) on Wise's techniques for promoting his forgeries. Carter found that while the Dickens volume had escaped Wiseian influence, the Swinburne and Tennyson volumes were full of it. Thomson had innocently acknowledged Wise's assistance in these books: the result was that the Tennyson included all the Wise forgeries, and the Swinburne included 'all the identified forgeries and the other piratical or Wiseian printings'. Provenance: (1) book-label of the bibliographer Simon Nowell-Smith, and pencilled note initialled by him recording his gift of the book in Feb.'62 to (2) John Carter; below that a pencilled note (clear in the book, but barely legible in our photo so we have adjusted the contrast) in the hand of (4) John Collins : 'John Collins from [(3)] Graham Pollard's books (he had it from John)'. Three of these names need no introduction. Simon Harcourt Nowell-Smith (1909-96) is perhaps less familiar but, doubtless building on an excellent education at New College, Oxford, he was - as his obituarist in the Independent put it - "a great bibliophile and bibliographical scholar of the highest order", with a career including stints on The Times editorial staff, at the London Library and as President of the Bibliographical Society. For his Presidential lecture there, in 1963, he addressed the subject of 'T.J. Wise as Bibliographer', and he made other contributions to Wiseian studies including a new preface to the 1967 reprint of Wise's Ashley Library catalogue. A copy with a splendid four-fold bibliographical provenance, including both of the authors of "An Enquiry into the Nature of certain Nineteenth-Century Pamphlets" and one of the authors of the "Sequel". The front free endpaper bears the blue booklabel of the bibliographer Simon Nowell-Smith, with his pencil note below: "Given to John Carter Feb. 1962 SNS". Below that John Collins has written in pencil: "John Collins from Graham Pollard's books (he had it from John)". Boards slightly fingermarked, minor wear at corners, spine-label browned and edgeworn, endpapers browned, last two text-leaves a little spotted, otherwise Good.

In generally good condition. Some rubbing on edges. Spine label a little brown with loss around edges. Binding has a slight lean to binding. A few faint marks to boards.
