Tyndale's Testament vertelt het verhaal van hoe een geleerde uit Oxford een stem gaf aan de boerenjongen, en hoe zijn erfenis in het Engels als wereldtaal en in het politieke en religieuze gedachtengoed van onze moderne wereld blijft doorleven…. In Antwerpen werden tijdens de vroege Reformatie talrijke teksten gedrukt die cruciaal zouden blijken voor onze cultuurgeschiedenis. De bijbelvertalingen van Tyndale (c. 1494-1536) nemen een prominente plaats in binnen dit corpus. Dankzij de relatief tolerante houding van de Antwerpse magistraten werd het mogelijk dergelijke publicaties op de markt te brengen. Niettemin werd Tyndale uiteindelijk toch aangehouden door wapendragers van Karel V en als ketter in Vilvoorde op de brandstapel geplaatst. Zijn vertalingen van het Nieuwe Testament (Worms, 1526; Antwerpen, 1534, 1535, 1536) en de Pentateuch (Antwerpen, 1530) zouden een diepgaande invloed blijven uitoefenen op latere Engelse bijbels en langs deze weg ook op de verdere ontwikkeling van taal en cultuur in de Engelstalige wereld. Het Testament van Tyndale bevat bijdragen van internationaal bekende specialisten. Het boek plaatst de verwezenlijkingen van Tyndale niet enkel in de onmiddellijke omgeving van Antwerpen als metropool van handel en boekdrukkunst, maar ook in een ruimere culturele en intellectuele context, waarin Erasmus en Luther sleutelfiguren waren. Het bestudeert de overname van het werk van Tyndale in latere Engelse vertalingen via de Coverdale-bijbel (Antwerpen, 1535) en geeft een overzicht van de erkenning die aan Tyndale in de loop der tijden gegeven werd als vader van de moderne Engelse bijbelvertaling en de Anglo-Amerikaanse evangelische traditie. Dit boek wordt gepubliceerd ter gelegenheid van de Vierde Internationale Tyndale-conferentie in de Lessius Hogeschool in Antwerpen. Het bevat ook de catalogus van een grootschalige tentoonstelling (3 september - 1 december 2002) in het Museum Plantin-Moretus, waarvan het archief opgenomen werd op de UNESCO-lijst van het culturele werelderfgoed. De publicatie is rijk geillustreerd met meer dan honderd afbeeldingen (waarvan 10 in kleurendruk). Het bevat onder meer een volledige weergave in kleur van de enige overblijvende titelbladzijde van het eerste Engelse Nieuwe Testament in druk, uit het unieke exemplaar dat bewaard wordt in de Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek in Stuttgart. 1150 g.
