Ein Großteil der Erkenntnisse, auf denen unsere Wissenschaften heute aufbauen, gründen im Forscherdrang des 19. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Drang, die Welt zu entdecken, zu erklären, zu vermessen und zu s…ystematisieren, schien in jener Epoche ungeheuer stark gewesen zu sein, so dass kaum ein Mensch, dem Bildung wichtig war, der studiert hatte, der Ehrgeiz besaß, sich diesem Wettlauf um Wissen entziehen konnte. Und so entstand eine riesige Menge an grundlegenden Werken - häufig so einfach und plausibel geschrieben, dass es selbst für Laien spannend ist darin zu lesen. Noch heute. An den Universitäten bildeten sich neue Disziplinen und Fächer heraus, wie etwa die Sozialwissenschaften, die Psychologie, die Psychiatrie. Zuweilen unter großen Widerständen, denn die traditionellen Wissenschaften wie Medizin oder Philosophie wehrten sich gegen diese wortwörtliche Auf-Fächerung ihres geistigen Bestandes. Die neue Wissenschaftsidee jedoch obsiegte: Wissenschaft als Forschung um des Forschens willen. Wissenschaft als Selbstzweck. Was Medizin, Biologie, Chemie betraf, wurde die gesamte zelluläre, molekulare, atomare Basis der Welt in einer Spanne von hundert Jahren freigeschaufelt. So formulierte Matthias Jakob Schleiden erstmalig die Zelltheorie, welche die individuelle Entwicklung der Lebewesen erklärte. Weitere große Namen auf dem Gebiet der mikroskopischen Pathologie waren: Robert Remak (Behandlung von Nerven- und Muskelerkrankungen durch Elektrotherapie), Rudolf Albert von Kölliker (Begründer der modernen, mikroskopischen Morphologie) und Gustav Jacob Henle (Pionier der Histologie). Der Biologe Karl Ernst von Baer entdeckte bei seinen embryologischen Experimenten die menschliche Eizelle. Die Forschungsergebnisse des deutschen Pathologen Rudolf Virchow beeinflussen die moderne Medizin bis heute: Seine Lehre, wonach die Zelle der Ort der Erkrankung ist, löste die alte Vorstellung von den Körpersäften ab. Durch die Begründung der Bakteriologie (Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch) konnten innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte die uralten Geißeln der Menschheit wie Milzbrand, Diphtherie, Tuberkulose, Lepra, Pest eingegrenzt, bzw. gänzlich besiegt werden. Der Enthusiasmus über diese Entdeckungen schien so groß zu sein, dass man sich unbedingt mitteilen wollte. Und so entstanden neben den Büchern auch allerlei gelehrte Gesellschaften und wissenschaftliche Vereinigungen. Institute auch, die noch heute existieren und die die Namen bedeutender Wissenschaftler von damals tragen. Im post-aufgeklärten und napoleonisch-revolutionierten Deutschland begann so nach und nach eine breite Bildungselite das intellektuelle Leben zu bestimmen und verschaffte sich Weltgeltung. Die ersten Nobelpreise in Physik und Medizin gingen 1901 an die deutschen Forscher Röntgen und von Behring, ein Jahr später erhielt Hermann Emil Fischer den Nobelpreis für Chemie. Ferne Länder, etwa Japan, übernahmen große Teile des deutschen Rechtssystems. Gelesen wurde eben überall. Verlag Classic Edition will den Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts ein neues Forum geben, indem es ihre Bücher wieder auflegt. Darunter sind viele uns noch heute geläufige Namen, aber auch solche, die - zu Unrecht - in Vergessenheit geraten sind.
