Yet, as bestselling biographer Sarah Bradford reveals in this breathtaking new portrait ~ the first full~scale biography of Lucrezia since before World War II ~ the truth is far more fascinating than the myth. Neither a vicious monster nor a seductive pawn, Lucrezia Borgia was a shrewd, determined woman who used her beauty and intelligence to secure a key role in the political struggles of her day. Born the illegitimate daughter of Rodrigo Cardinal Borgia and his scheming mistress, Vannozza Cattanei, Lucrezia was twelve when her father became Pope Alexander VI and thirteen when she was forced into her first marriage. She would marry twice more, gaining increasing power with each match, until she came into her own as duchess of the city~state of Ferrara. Bradford argues that in her maturity Lucrezia was an enlightened ruler, kind and decisive in time of war, generous to the poets and artists of her court, passionate in love and utterly indifferent to sexual morality. Drawing from a trove of contemporary documents and fascinating firsthand accounts, Bradford brings to life the art, the pageantry and the dangerous politics of the Renaissance world Lucrezia Borgia helped to create. Bradford is an expert on the Borgia family and in Lucrezia she has found a subject ideally suited to her gift for narrative and psychological insight. Sex, gossip, murder, astonishing beauty and ambition ~ this is the Renaissance at its most irresistible.…

This fully annotated selection from his eloquent correspondence allows the writer to reveal himself & the fascinating world in which he lived. James numbered among his correspondents the writers William Dean Howells, Henry Adams, Robert Louis Stevenson, H.G. Wells & Edith Wharton, as well as presidents & prime ministers, painters & great ladies, actresses & bishops. These letters provide a rich & fascinating source for James' views on his own works, the literary craft, sex, politics & friendship, & collectively constitute, in Philip Horne's own words, James' "real & best biography". Horne's system of introductory head-notes & accompanying footnotes helps readers to feel & understand how fully James himself was connected with his world, providing a "a narrative of passionate creation". More than half the letters in "Henry James: A Life in Letters" have never before been published, whilst many previous errors of transcription have been corrected. This landmark in James scholarship offers unique insights into this complex & compelling artist & individual. * HIGH PRAISE: "Philip Horne has set before us a feast. The letters themselves are ravishing enough, but there is much, much more . . . We owe a considerable debt of gratitude to Philip Horne for this immense achievement. I cannot remember when I read a work of scholarship w/ more pleasure . . . truly awesome & imaginative." -Tony Tanner, Professor of English, King's College, Cambridge * PHILIP HORNE, a preeminent authority on Henry James, was educated at Cambridge University. In addition to this superbly edited & presented collection of James' letters, Horne has published "Henry James & Revision: The New York Edition" (1990), & has edited James' "A London Life", "The Reverberator", & the Penguin edition of "The Tragic Muse". * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost additional fee) & via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL AIRMAIL to all international destinations.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Like New. 340 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy and dust jacket! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially and virtually flawless copy and dust jacket with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Chin Yee Lai (Jacket Design); George G. Rockwood & Company (Jacket Photo); Erin Benach (Desgin) (illustratore).…

No other book covers the entire region & offers such profound insights into the roots of Balkan violence or explains so vividly the origins of modern Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, & Albania. Many reader's have welcomed the author's insights into the final century of Ottoman rule, a complex & colorful period, knowledge of which is essential for understanding recent conflicts that have so troubled the area. Glenny's account of ea. national group in the Balkans & its struggle for statehood is lucid & fair-minded, & he brings the culture of different nationalisms to life. The narrative is permeated w/ sharply observed set pieces of kings, guerrillas, bandits, generals & politicians. He interweaves a narrative of key events w/ the story of international affairs--the relations in states in the Balkans & between them & the great powers. It is the latter relationship that lies at the heart of this compulsively readable book. Glenny shows how the great-power interference in the region has been catastrophic for the peoples of the Balkans & how so-called "ancient hatreds" & "tribal rivalries" have often been intensified by ignorant diplomats in distant capitals, creating states, allocating populations & redrawing borders--w/ deadly consequences. It remains to be seen, Glenny argues in a terse epilogue, whether the recent Western intervention will have a more benign outcome. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "As readers are reminded by Misha Glenney's SWEEPING, FAIRMINDED & AUTHORITATIVE history, the demise of multinational empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, & finally Soviet) has often re-exposed ancient fault-lines--rarely making conflict inevitable, but often making conflict possible. Mr. Glenney's book is ADMIRABLY full of uncomfortable passages for nationalist historians who try to view the region's history as a Manichean struggle between one neatly defined ethnic & religious community (Ottoman Greeks, Bosnian Muslims, Croatian Catholics) & their abiding enemies." -The Economist "Misha Glenney is the WISEST & most REFLECTIVE of all the Western journalists who have covered this part of Europe in the past two decades." -Neal Ascherson, The Observer "Glenney has written an EPIC book, ESSENTIAL reading for all who want to understand tie extraordinary complex region." -The Scotsman * SHIPPING: We custom-wrap, label & securely package this fine book w/ our greatest care for FREE shipment within the United States via USPS MEDIA MAIL (or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below-cost charge), or for prompt delivery to international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL MAIL at our posted below-cost rates.…
