This volume, privately bound, brings together 8 early 19th century titles of humorous, witty and satirical prose and verse. Volume 1: Broad Grins by English dramatist George Colman the Younger. Formerly published under the title 'My Night-Gown and Slippers', this edition of Colman's humorous writings includes a number of additional coarse, satirical verses. Volume 2: The first edition of Henry Lutrell's Advice to Julia, his most famous work of London society verse. Volume 3: The Pleasure of Making a Will, which is an extract from William Kitchiner's 'The Art of Invigorating and Prolonging Life'. Volume 4: The first edition of Sketches of Young Ladies by "Quiz" [Edward Caswall], illustrated by "Phiz". Volume 5: The first edition of Sketches of Young Gentlemen by Charles Dickens, also illustrated by "Phiz", written as a satirical response to Caswall's Sketches of Young Ladies (the previous title in this volume). Volume 6: The first edition of Sketches of Young Couples by Charles Dickens, illustrated by "Phiz". Following on from Sketches of Young Gentlemen, this title was the second and last in series of humerous sketches by Dickens. Volume 7: A New Art Teaching How to Be Plucked by Scribelerus Redivivus [Edward Caswall], providing a satirical treatise on the 'art' of failing exams. With a fold out 'Synopsis of Drinking' at p.22. Volume 8: The Devil's Walk: A Poem, jointly written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey, published under the pseudonym Professor Porson. 12mo. Illustrated.
