Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Vern Blosum does not exist. The story can be told simply: in 1961 an artist paints five canvases inspired by pages in a horticulture book; then came parking meters, water hydrants, and animals. Some of them were shown at Leo Castelli Gallery, sold to collectors and public institutions, included in seminal exhibitions or books on Pop arta seemingly normal progression in an artist's career, were it not for a rumor that emerged regarding his true identity. Alfred H. Barr, the legendary director of MoMA, started to worry about the rumor sometime in 1964 and, after extensive inquiries, came to the conclusion that Vern Blosum did not exist. His paintings were taken down or sent back to storage, and the artist's name fell into oblivion. Vern Blosum does not exist, but his work does. This book retrieves the oeuvre of this particularly elusive artist. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Written by British graphic designer Scott King (born 1969) and illustrated by Philadelphia artist Will Henry, this funny, irreverent graphic novel depicts two protagonists of British public artAnish Kapoor and Antony Gormleyattempt to solve Afghanistan's many woes. The astonishing power of public art has long been recognized by both governments and big business alike, with increasingly enormous public sculptures being deployed to "regenerate" ailing post-industrial areas or add "wow factor" to corporate HQ piazzas and ever-expanding airports. What if this strategy were employed in an attempt to turn around the fortunes of an entire country? This book, published in JRP|Ringier's Hapax series, proposes a scenario in which Kapoor and Gormley are commissioned by the United Nations in a last-ditch effort to solve the social, financial and political problems of Afghanistan. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Will, Henry (illustratore).

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This A-Z "memoir about art publishing" celebrates the ten-year anniversary of JRP|Ringier, created in 2004 by Swiss art curator Lionel Bovier and Ringier AG owner Michael Ringier. With 632 books and 1,800 authors published, 20,000 printing hours, 4,000 tons of books transported and one million sold, JRP|Ringier continues to work collaboratively with contemporary artists to produce carefully curated, high-quality publications. The book goes from A for Art Publisher and B for Books to Y for Yellowpress and Z for Zombie Books ("projects that are in the state of non-death: they are not officially stopped, so they weigh on you, on your program's list, being revived every now and then by someone who does not want them to die, without being able to make them exist") and is illustrated with images of signings and on-press scenes. This volume is published in the Hapax series. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Today, declares svengali-at-large Malcolm McLaren, there are two words that sum up the culture: authenticity' is one, and the other karaoke'! Many artists spend their entire life trying to authenticate, make true, a karaoke culturebut you have to be a magician to make that happen. This book, like the exhibition from which it stems, is built around McLaren's Shallow, a series of 21 musical paintings made from a grab bag of pop culture's debris over the past 50 years. The project, curated by Bernd Wurlitzer, brought together music-related works by Delia Brown, Wolfgang Flad, Rodney Graham, Gregor Hildebrandt, Damien Hirst, Alicja Kwade, Jim Lambie, Jack Pierson, Rob Pruitt, Michael Queenland, Anselm Reyle, Michael Sailstorfer and Andreas Schulze. McLaren has proven to be a visionary of pop culture and a pop cultural icon for more than 30 years; with Shallow, he formally announces his identity as an artist. Text by Delia Brown, Rodney Graham, Damien Hirst. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume takes stock of critical perspectives on the work of New York-based Wade Guyton (born 1972), assembling both expansive, scholarly essays and more concise, journalistic assessments by an international array of authors--Daniel Baumann, Kirsty Bell, Johanna Burton, Catherine Chevalier, Bettina Funcke, John Kelsey, Scott Rothkopf and Peter Schjeldahl among them--offering an invaluable reference for any reader coming to terms with his artistic production. The volume also holds up a mirror to the rapidly changing context for Guyton's work, which in a few short years shifted from discussions of the widespread use of modernist motifs in art during the early 2000s to others revolving around the artwork, anticipating its continuous circulation as digital media became ubiquitous in art and culture alike. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Part of JRP-Ringer's innovative Documents series, published with Les Presses du Reel and dedicated to critical writings, this publication comprises a unique collection of interviews by Hans Ulrich Obrist mapping the development of the curatorial field--from early independent curators in the 1960s and 70s and the experimental institutional programs developed in Europe and the U.S. through the inception of Documenta and the various biennales and fairs--with pioneering curators Anne D'Harnoncourt, Werner Hoffman, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, Seth Siegelaub, Walter Zanini, Johannes Cladders, Lucy Lippard, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hulten and Harald Szeemann. Speaking of Szeemann on the occasion of this legendary curator's death in 2005, critic Aaron Schuster summed up, "the image we have of the curator today: the curator-as-artist, a roaming, freelance designer of exhibitions, or in his own witty formulation, a 'spiritual guest worker'. If artists since Marcel Duchamp have affirmed selection and arrangement as legitimate artistic strategies, was it not simply a matter of time before curatorial practice--itself defined by selection and arrangement--would come to be seen as an art that operates on the field of art itself?" Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Igor Zabel (1958-2005) was one of Slovenia's foremost curators and writers. Published as a part of JRP Ringier's Documents critical writings series (published with Les presses du reel), this important collection of Zabel's writings--his first in English--serves as a methodology model for research into Eastern European art techniques and practices. The selected texts are divided into four chapters: "East-West and Between," which explores perceptions of otherness following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989; "Strategies and Spaces of Art," which examines strategies of representation and theories of display and the role of the curator; "Ad Personam," which includes individual artists and art from Socialist Realism and conceptualism to postmodernism and contextual art, particularly in Slovenia and South Eastern Europe; and "Extras," a selection of Zabel's columns on arts and culture. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This first volume of JRP|Ringiers complete John Baldessari writings project traces the genesis and development of the artists understanding of art in the early 1960s. More Than You Wanted to Know About John Baldessari presents Baldessari as storyteller, moralist, teacher and occasional gadfly, always concerned to accomplish what he describes as the central task of art making: to communicate in a way that people can understand. These writings address everything from matters of color in sculpture, to the dilemmas of art students in need of ideas, to the art worlds ever-conflicted relationship with money, while always returning to Baldessaris love of language and his longstanding investigation into the tensions of word and image. With numerous never-before-published texts and facsimiles of original documents, this long-anticipated collection will prove essential reading for anyone involved in contemporary art. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This publication is the result of visits carried out by Hans Ulrich Obrist to artists' studios in Prague around 2001 and 2008. Interviews with Milan Grygar, Jiri Kovanda, Karel Malich, Zdenek Sykora and others map the historical events as well as the personal stories of the protagonists of the Czech "second avant-garde" and the "neo-modernism" of the former socialist bloc. Born between 1920 and 1945, this generation lived through the cultural upheaval of the Prague Spring in the 1960s and the "normalization" of the 1970s, when censorship was reintroduced. These interviews contextualize a generation of Czech artists within the historical events that marked their lives and careers, and draw attention to their urgently felt need to resist historical events while keeping their artistic practices sustained, radical and vital. This volume is part of the Documents series of critical writings. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
