Aggiungi al carrelloCloth, 8vo, 25 cm, x,182 pp. From the blurb: "The textbooks of science are being rewritten following the extraordinary disclosures described in this book. It has long been taught that no specimens survive from the early days of the microscope, but Brian J. Ford found nine specimen packets prepared three centuries ago by the 'father of the microscope' Antony van Leeuwenhoek, at a time when the foundations of modern biology were being laid. His research has revealed how the specimens were prepared and how the first sections were cut. He has identified the species Leeuwenhoek examined and even found some of the great man's cells adherent to the sections. He then recreated the pioneering experiments which gave us such fundamental concepts as the 'cell nucleus' and showed that many neglected early microscopes - formerly described as 'low-power dissecting instruments' - were actually capable of generating images of the highest quality. His story oudines a prolific and intense programme of research carried out in several countries. It is a vivid first-hand account of scientific investigation which brings alive the origins of the modern era of biology." Very Good in slightly used dustwrapper.

A study in the history of microscopy centred on the author's claim of the rediscovery and analysis of nine specimen packets prepared in the seventeenth century by Antony van Leeuwenhoek, long believed lost. Ford's investigations across several European collections--principally in Britain, the Netherlands, and Belgium--led him to identify the biological material under study, report the presence of preserved cellular structures, and reconstruct aspects of early microscopic technique associated with Leeuwenhoek's pioneering work. The book further re-examines early simple microscopes, often previously dismissed as low-powered or primarily dissecting instruments, arguing for their greater resolving capability and scientific importance. Chapters survey the origins of simple microscopy, Leeuwenhoek's legacy, the work of Robert Brown and the identification of the cell nucleus, developments associated with Joseph Banks and the voyage of the Beagle, and the wider implications of early microscopy for the emergence of modern cell biology. An interpretative and sometimes controversial contribution to the historiography of microscopy and early experimental biology.
