Chapters survey the origins of simple microscopy, Leeuwenhoek's legacy, the work of Robert Brown and the identification of the cell nucleus, developments associated with Joseph Banks and the voyage of the Beagle, and the wider implications of early microscopy for the emergence of modern cell biology. An interpretative and sometimes controversial contribution to the historiography of microscopy and early experimental biology.
