Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 312 pages, illustrations (some colour), portraits; 30 cm. Catalogue of a loan exhibition held March 7 to May 28, 1984. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Spine slightly cocked/lean. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by arrangement. Richly illustrated with colour plates. "In recent years there have been excellent one-man exhibitions of the major Pre-Raphaelite artists but no really comprehensive exhibition has ever been devoted to Pre-Raphaelite painting as such. In mounting the present exhibition we have tried to bring together as many as possible of the essential works of the movement so as to give a more complete account than has been possible in the past. The strictly chronological arrangement we have adopted affords a unique opportunity to examine the changing affinities and divisions between the protagonists of Pre-Raphaelitism, as well as allowing us to re-unite paintings by different artists which were first shown together in the exhibitions of the time." - Foreword. Size: 4to.

Libro
Softcover. Condizione: Vg (bumping to corners). Color-illustrated wraps, black spine with cream lettering. 312 pp. with 250 works illustrated, nearly 100 in color. Catalogue from the exhibition of March to May 1984. Tracing the Pre-Raphaelite movement through its chronological development rather than by artist, this volume concentrates on the vital years from 1848 (when the Brotherhood was formed) to 1860, but also includes a substantial group of works from the following 20 years - a period during which the movement took new directions. The full range of Pre-Raphaelite painting is represented, from the hard-edged style of Millais's early work to the sensuousness of Rossetti's and Burne-Jones's painting in the 1870s. Altogether 250 works from collections all over the world are illustrated and discussed by scholars such as Mary Bennett, Judith Bronkhurst, John Christian, Alastair Grieve, Benedict Read and Malcolm Warner. In his introduction, Sir Alan Bowness surveys the development of Pre-Raphaelitism and examines to what extent it was ever a shared style. The chronological arrangement of the book is designed to focus on the same question and to suggest the numerous cross-currents of the movement.
