Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. With playfulness and a large dose of wit, Robert Merton traces the origin of Newton's aphorism, "If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." Using as a model the discursive and digressive style of Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Merton presents a whimsical yet scholarly work which deals with the questions of creativity, tradition, plagiarism, the transmission of knowledge, and the concept of progress. "This book is the delightful apotheosis of donmanship: Merton parodies scholarliness while being faultlessly scholarly; he scourges pedantry while brandishing his own abstruse learning on every page. The most recondite and obscure scholarly squabbles are transmuted into the material of comedy as the ostensible subject is shouldered to one side by yet another hobby horse from Merton's densely populated stable. He has created a jeu d'esprit which is profoundly suggestive both in detail and as a whole."--Sean French, Times Literary Supplement.

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Altersbedingt leicht vergilbt, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar / Lightly yellowed due to age, otherwise very good copy. - Foreword: I CAN THINK of five reasons why an Italian foreword to this book could be considered excessive, pleonastic. One, the books author is alive and well, and his reputation makes ridiculous any notion of portraying him for some improbably ingenuous reader; two, any commentary would demean this book, because, by its authors own confessions, its logic follows that of Tristram Shandy, and to transform Sternes text into a Narratio more geometrico demonstrata would be an enterprise worthy of the Oulipo; three, if a reader actually needed suggestions for his reading, the author has provided them, since, not content, after accompanying his suite with a ground bass of at least fifty pages of learned notes, he concludes it with a gigue of synthetic indices (which naturally make it meander all the more); four, if a work like this required any presentation, another author, Denis Donoghue, affected by the authors Shandean compulsion, has provided an afterword: and five, finally, the author, for the second American edition, in 1985, has already written a preface that offers clear signposts, even before readers can lose their way. Still, I have accepted Robert Mertons invitation, because he wanted me to raise the cup at the chemical marriagie between his outsize protagonists and Italian publishing. The image of II Mulino, the Italian firm named for a windmill, implicating Don Quixote, represents the Giants; I climb onto the windmill and become the dwarf.
