Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket, small loss to top and bottom of spine, spine slightly sunned, not price clipped (£3.50) but price scribbled over with biro, an old price (45p) in biro to ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 640pp, decorated endpapers. Dr Granville, a Bath physician and assiduous spa fancier, followed a somewhat arduous tour around Britain, bent, not on a general topographical survey, but on a specialised look at virtually every known spa. His Spas of England (1841) remains the classic on the subject for the early Victorian period, minutely analysing each well's mineral properties and observing the company assembled.

An experienced physician and traveller, Granville was also a shrewd and amusing observer, bu perhaps the chief interest of his work today lies not so much in what it tells us of individual resorts and their settings as in the picture it provides of the whole health and holiday trade in early Victorian England.
