Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimale Gebrauchsspuren, sehr guter Allgemeinzustand. / Minimally worn, overall in very good condition. - The message of tragedy has needed reinterpretation by each new age since Greek antiquity. This book, approaching the subject as an aspect of the development of modern Western discourses, proposes to place in question the very concept of tragedy and the tragic. It starts out with the premise that tragedy is a discourse which, in developing, contributes centrally to the invention and production of knowledge, including such notions as those of the subject, the individual will, power, and responsibility. In showing the specific epistemic role played by tragedy in the formation of modern discourses, Timothy Reiss thus ties it in closely with developments in philosophy, science, and political theory. Reiss focuses upon Renaissance France and England in his examination of tragedy as a discursive process organizing a particular reality. He discusses French and English neoclassical tragic theory as well as the foreshadowing elements in Greek tragedy, and then goes on to analyze in detail a number of works by Buchanan, Jodelle, Marlowe, Garnier, Shakespeare, Dryden, and Racine. In conclusion he shows how the development of tragedy is concomitant with that of an essentially political discourse, both theoretical and practical. Contents 1. A Hypothesis and Its Prehistory 2. Buchanan, Montaigne, and the Difficulty of Speaking 3. Jodelles Cléopâtre and the Enchanted Circle 4. Power and Fallibility (Tamburlaine and Faustus') 5. Social Truth and the Will to Power: Richelieu, Hobbes, Bajazet 1 ? Classicism, the Individual, and Economic Exchange (Iphigénie') 11. From Phèdre to History: The Truths of Time and the Fictions of Eternity 12. Tragedy and Truth.
