The whole book has been completely and carefully revised; the nomenclature has been brought up to date; new hybrid shrub roses have been included and earlier comments have been checked and amplified in the light of further experiences. Mr. Thomas has the gift of infecting his readers with his deep love of his subject, and he is as gifted with his paint~brush and pencil as with his pen; he includes numerous colour and monochrome pictures from his own hand. The book is divided into three main sections. The first part recounts the history, changing fashions, and characters of roses in general. The second part describes the wild species and their hybrids, from the European Dog Rose, the Cinnamon, Burnet and Austrian Roses, to the remote Japanese Rugosas and American species. The third part deals with later developments, after the advent of the China Rose, including Hybrid Musks and Hybrid Perpetuals and the evolution and uses of modern hybrid shrub roses. Other features of this comprehensive handbook are a remarkable and unique chapter on fragrance , a section on cultivation and pruning, an exhaustive index and bibliography. Mr Gordon D. Rowley contributes notes and diagrams illustrating genealogy.
