Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Printing. First paperback printing. Wrappers lightly rubbed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1981 Trade Paperback. In his eighties at the time of publication, Jorge Luis Borges had come into English in haphazard fashion, so that the growing numbers of his readers had to track him down through a confusion of incomplete collections, to piece him together from a set of displaced parts. Although Borges is celebrated for certain stories, certain poems, certain essays, even for certain words and phrases, these are all facets of an unmistakable whole, the Borges whom many consider to be the writer of our time. This book includes a number of earlier pieces never before translated, some of them not collected even in Spanish, and moves, as Borges moved, through his more fantastic work to a later realism. Besides the commentary, which sets the pieces in the context of Borges's writing life, the book has a bio-bibliography, and notes on all the pieces chosen, which point out to the reader the web of interconnections and recurring themes woven by Borges's work. The essential one-volume Borges, this book is an unequaied introduction to the work of the master.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Born in Buenos Aires, Jorge Borges (1899-1986) was educated in Europe and returned to Buenos Aires in 1921, where he co-founded several avant-garde literary periodicals. In 1955, after the fall of Juan Peron, whom he vigorously opposed, he was appointed director of the Argentine National Library. With Samuel Beckett he was awarded the 1961 International Publishers Prize, which helped to establish him as one of the most prominent writers in the world.  Borges regularly taught and lectured throughout the United States and Europe. His ideas have been a profound influence on writers throughout the Western world and on literary and critical theory. A prolific writer of essays, short stories, and plays, Borges regarded people's endeavors to understand an incomprehensible world as fiction; hence, his fiction is metaphysical and based on what he called 'an esthetics of the intellect'. Some critics have called him 'a mystic'. This collection was published before Borges died, so it contains what he thought were among his best pieces. It also contains pieces never before translated into English. 368 pages, 6" x 9 1/2" It has not been read but the original owner signed the front endpaper. Aside from that, and a production crease at the top of the spine, it's in perfect condition.…
